I have an idea that i want to get everyone's opinion on. As you the summer blockbuster season kicked off this week with the release of Iron Man. Here man the regulars/semi rehulars at FM will most likely see most or all of the blockbuster what i was thinking you post a number rating on this forum for each blockbuster after you see them and at the end of summer we come up with some FM list ranking the blockbusters from best to worst. i will do all the averages and stuff like that determine what films are 'blockbusters' besides the obivous ones like Iron Man and Indania Jones. This might a little confusing but just give your feedback.

Iron Man - 9/10.

I enjoyed it very much, and it currently sits at #2 for the year, just barely behind Vantage Point, which I actually found more thrilling. Like most of the posters above, I expect that if a 10 is to be had, it'll either be Wall-E or TDK.

Summer Outlook:

Blockbusters
Iron Man

Kung-Fu Panda
Get Smart (legs film)
Wall-E (the big one)
Hancock (barely)
The Dark Knight
Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Past Mid-Range and Just Short
Speed Racer
What Happens In Vegas
Sex and The City
You Don't Mess The Zohan
The Love Guru (opens big then drops)
Mamma Mia!
The X-Files: I Want To Believe
The Pineapple Express
Tropic Thunder

Mid-Range
Made Of Honor
The Incredible Hulk (flop)
The Happening (flop)
Wanted
Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3-D
Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Meet Dave
Step Brothers
The Mummy 3 (flop)

Low Range
Space Chimps (flop)
Bangkok Dangerous
Babylon A.D. (flop)

And I really wish these films would come out:
The Poughkeepsie Tapes (this could have been the next Blair Witch-type hit if it had come in February)
All The Boys Love Mandy Lane (the first film from the director of The Wackness)
St. Trinian's (because I like Jodie Whittaker, that girl from Venus)
Nappily Ever After (Halle Berry with a shaved head)
Earth (the re-edited version of Planet Earth narrated by Patrick Stewart)
The Meerkats (produced by the BBC)
Meerkat Manor: Queen Of The Kalahari (I like meerkats)
a reissue of U2 3D (where people actually know it's out)

And if I can woo the girl that I really love, I could possibly be brainwashed by the High School Musical trilogy. And everything I'd do, I'd do it for her.

Which is a good score from me. I rarely give 8 or over. Only my top 25 films get a 10.

Iron Man was very entertaining. Downey was great, there was plenty of humour, a relevant story. It just felt a tad unmemorable, and the big fight at the end felt like only a minor step for a hero. That should mean that the sequel will be better, so I'm looking forward.

Iron Man - 7/10. Numbers, you really echoed my sentiments. I have a similar scoring system as you, (approximately my Top 50 gets a 10, whereas a 6.5+ means I will likely add the DVD to my collection), so this is a positive response. I can't get enough RDJ in my life, (not to mention Jeff Bridges), and he was definitely on point once again. The whole experience was lots of fun and I'm glad I got to see it at the Uptown (a theater in DC that increases viewing pleasure of any movie by a good 20%). But yes, if I had any beef, it was the climax wasn't quite enough for me.

Got myself carried away by a couple of friends in a Champs Elysées theater... anyway...
Here's the thing though. I had, believe it or not, a good time. It's not a great comedy, but it happened that it was the perfect movie for a friday night out with friends. Good gags, good characters, very predictable. Lots of laugh.

One of the very few RomComs i actually enjoyed. I thought it was funny and has some very laugh-out-loud moments that had the whole theater amused. I know it was predictable, but the story was actually half-good compared to what we usually get with RomComs. The chemistry between Kutcher and Diaz was excellent, and it had some great guest stars as well. Also, it had Lake Bell who i love.

I agree that all of these movies were good, but I think that a "memorable" movie would be something, that in 2 or 3 years you could say "hey, do you remember (insert movie) back in 2008, that was a great movie." Thats exactly what i meant by memorable. But also the closest theater is 30 minutes away and its a crappy one with old screens and bad service. If i want to go to a good theater its over an hour away. so i usually to wait till the movie comes out on DVD, unless i want to watch it really bad. So i have to be selective in which movies i go see in theaters. You know with gas prices and everything.

I agree that Cloverfield is a memorable movie, but that came out in January. I think my original point was that a lot of people flocked to Iron Man b/c nothing "memorable" has come out since then. Sure there have been plenty of good movies, but for most of the public, nothing that will demand their attention in a few years. Iron Man, thus, was a breath of fresh air to a lot of people who haven't been thrilled by a movie for some time. Just an idea :) Anyway, that's sure to change once August comes around, b/c there are some huge hitters coming up! Good luck to all in their leagues.

Well I guess that is the nature of subjectivity, I am definitely much more likely to have that conversation about The Bank Job than I ever would be about Iron Man.
But then I also rarely rent movies I've already seen before, probably the only exception in the past 5-10 years has been Pan's Labyrinth. (and that is not because I am one of those people with extravagant movie collections, I only have about 20-25 dvds).

I also have to add that although released in 07, Juno did make most of its money in 08, meaning most people saw it in 08 and trust me, that movie isn't going anywhere for a long time. Simply because it is a perfect date movie that girls will love and guys can actually enjoy too. I personally loved it, and my list of favorites is about as "guy movie" as they come.
Re:An Idea

Redbelt - 8/10. Not exactly a summer blockbuster, but a summer release nonetheless, so I figured I would throw it on here. Really enjoyed the movie, was glad to see a return to form from Mamet after the debacle that was Edmond. Chiwetel Ejiofor is one of the more underrated actors out there and he handled the leading role very well. Mamet's dialogue is not easy to deal with without sounding wooden or awkward, but he came off so natural in the role. The script is fun, with all the typical Mamet Spanish Prisoner style twists and turns, although I don't think it was quite as seamless as SP. Many of the usual Mamet players are there to contribute as well (his wife, Ricky Jay, Joe Mantegna, etc.). In terms of Mamet-directed movies, I would prolly go:
Spanish Prisoner
House of Games
State and Main
Redbelt
Heist
Spartan
Any family vacation or wedding he happened to film
Edmond (only wrote the screenplay and directed the play, but felt the need to reiterate it's awfulness...)

As for the other piece of this thread, I would agree that there hasn't been too much memorable this year, but I would argue that rarely from Jan.-May do you get much to go on in any given year, (disregarding flicks like Juno and other Oscar releases, as I caught them in 2007). I usually only have 1 slot in my Top 10 by end of year that comes out in these months, and I personally think Cloverfield has a good shot at that for this year. So far this year, I would prolly go Cloverfield, Redbelt, Bank Job, Sarah Marshall, Iron Man, in that order, although I've been a little slow to get to the theater so far this year, (maybe seen about 12 movies or so from 2008). So I'm very excited for summer season to pick up.

Chronicles of Narnia-7.5/10. It was good, probably on par with the first movie. I saw it with my church and everyone seemed to love it. The audience applauded at the end. Still very VERY disappointed with the Box Office. All we can hope for is that people love it as much as Iron Man so it can hold very strong and have a way better opening weekend than Mason is predicting.

number six - That's funny, because of the people whose posts I read on here, I seem to agree with your movie tastes more often than others. Granted, it's a pretty small sample size. Fair enough, though, I can certainly see how his style could be offputting. So yeah, if you hated that one, definitely stay away from Heist, Spartan, and prolly Redbelt.
I finally saw 21 (in fact it only came out in Australia last Thursday). Good solid popcorn flick. Obviously a more dramatized, Hollywood-take on the real-life events, but since I went into it expecting that, it was just fine. Perhaps 10-15 minutes too long, but that's a minor squabble. The ending was a bit of a stretch, but again, being so highly-dramatized, just take it for what it's worth...

Great Idea!

I think FM should let users rate all movies, and then let you filter out certain criteria such as wide releases, Box Office/Ultimate value, genres and release times. Boxofficemojo.com is a good site for rating films but its on a A B C grading scale which sucks. Imdb.com rates out of 10 and shows certain age groups results and it also shows the average, not the rounded result, like 8.93. Still FM could make one better.

I'd give Iron Man - 9.0/10.0 and Indy 4 - 8.5/10.0

I agree with tranny re KOTCS 8/10 from me. Good solid popcorn flick, hampered by the fact that the original trilogy is held in so high regard by the public already... Tough gig to follow IMO, but done as well as possible. Let's face it, KOTCS was never gonna exceed those ridiculously high expectations. That ending was a little... umm odd, but in retrospect this movie came from the same person who did E.T & Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, so go figure...

Now THIS is a Hulk movie. Forget ANYTHING about that 2003 disaster, this is in now way connected to that. This is a great story, with some great performances, and some of the best goddamn action I've seen in a long time.

Yes, the movie does get bogged down with some uninteresting mugging by Norton (reason it's not a 10/10), but all the scenes featuring the Hulk tearing shit up more than make up for it.

That last half hour. The build-up, the fight, and the pay-off. Just wow.

Quake, yes. Yes, they are cheating. You can't be that good while following the rules...

The Happening 1/10

I tried my best to go into this movie with an open mind, and I think I accomplished that. The beginning is promising, this out-of-left-field story actually felt plausible the way it is explained.

But.....

This movie is terrible. There is nothing here that can be salvaged into a positive thought about this garbage.

The actors - Atrocious. Now I like Mark Wahlberg, thought he's been great in most of his films. So I don't know if it was M. Night's script or influence that caused him to look so goddamn pathetic in this. Every line he delivered hurt my head, I felt like I was watching a high school drama teacher showing me what over-acting looks like. And M. Night's direction did not help his cause - zooming in on his mug every time he opened his mouth just made it worse. Now, I've never seen a Zooey Deschanel movie before, but if this is usual for her, I am glad I haven't. In scenes where she's supposed to be terrified or even a little bit nervous, her face/voice never changes from when she's happy or excited. She just looks a doe-eyed innocent little girl at all times, she looks more innocent than the actual little girl. She's basically Christina Ricci minus the talent. And since these two are the only main characters, this spells disaster for this movie.

The story doesn't make too much sense about 20 minutes into the movie, it contradicts itself over and over. And they pad it with senseless characters who don't have a purpose other than to kill themselves eventually.

And why is this rated R? There is very little gore, I don't think a clean hole in the head that is supposed to be a gunshot warrants an R. With a few minor changes, this could've been PG-13. I can't believe they pussied out on the blood and gore - the movie is about fucking suicide.

The CGI is terrible, that lion video looks like it belongs in Robot Chicken.

The ending. Oh wait, there is none! Hey, about this - next time you make a film about a mass apocalyptic event (I can't say the word "happening", it's used about a billion times in the movie), DELIVER US A FUCKING PLAUSIBLE ENDING!?!? Again, they pussied out on what SHOULD'VE took place in that kind of situation.

And you guys think Paul Haggis is blunt? Wait until you hear the five minute monologue on why we should stop polluting the planet or the plants will come again. Oooooooh, I'm fucking terrified. We don't need a take-home message, that's the whole point of the entire fucking other 90 minutes of the movie. Oh yeah, another thing - this movie, the whole spooky atmosphere of it, depends on you being scared of the wind. Oooooooh nooooo, the wind is blowing, cue the scary music Mr. Shamalayndingdong because that's so fucking scary.

This gets a point for M. Night having the brains not to write himself into this, I'm sure he would've played the Mark Wahlberg role if Fox let him.

I'd rather watch Meet The Spartans again. Do yourself a favor, don't waste your time on this shit. And if you must, please. please. Please download it illegally, don't let this make a profit and give this fuckwad another chance at another movie.

I enjoyed the heck out of it. Character stuff? HULK SMASH! I enjoyed it a bit more than 'Iron Man' although to be fair, Norton let Ang Lee do all the heavy lifting so that he can have fun now. Very pleased with the cgi -- immeasurably better than the previous effort. William Hurt was about as nuanced as one can be in this kind of film and although I wish there was more to Tim Roth's character, the performance wasn't bad.

At an opportune moment I yelled out 'HULK CRASH' which got a good laugh. And then lily told me to shut the f*ck up, *lol*

Fantastic movie. Marvel really knows what it is doing. I loved the Stan Lee cameo, i loved the RDJ cameo, and i loved the Lou Ferringno cameo as well.

Ed Norton was superb, Liv Tyler was great, and Roth was badass! William Hurt was also great, and he looked so much like Ted Levine that it freaked me out a little.

All in all the story was great, the action was superb, and the CGI was fantastic IMO. Bring on the next one, and the Avengers movie as well.

PS: loved the "don't make me... hungry... you wouldn't like me when i'm hungry" quote.. Perfect.

The Happening - 3/10

I really wanted to like this film and it just didn't come together. The dialogue really is terrible as everyone has said and the acting is laughable. Talking about laughs, the movie got more laughs than Zohan (more on that later.) I kept turning to my girlfriend saying, "Is this a comedy or a thriller?!". Seriously, people kept laughing out loud, it was just unbelievable what some of the characters were saying. There were a couple surprises, mostly scenes with the young boys and Ms. Jones , but otherwise it was a wasted opportunity, bland and boring, with an unsatisfying ending. There was a resounding "Huh?/*Sigh*" at the end, while some people tried figuring out what the deal was, others were just hurrying to leave.

And Buscemi, we could argue till the cows come home about comic movies following the comics (and I really could, there are so many tangents and liberties that directors have taken with their movies [but then so too did the comics]), but in the end, as long as it plays out well and doesn't divert too much from the origin story, I can allow myself to forget the 20 years of comic knowledge I have stored in my head.

Way too repetitive to be that entertaining. To be honest, the whole middle section of the movie was somewhat boring. The begining was very good, and the ending did pick it up, but the jokes were re-used way too much, and to be honest apart from The Phantom there was no one interesting enough to help Sandler out.

The Rocky scene and the Hezbollah hotline were the biggest laughs.

Well, it was pretty good. I guess I might have been expecting something like Iron Man and that's not what happened at all. The action scenes were good but sort of spoiled by the Internet clips. The cinematography I didn't like very much because all of the fighting was happening while the camera was shaking and it was hard to get a good look at the two monsters at the same time. But oh well. The movie was fast-paced and had good levels of excitement at the beginning and middle of the movie. I did not like the ending though. It cut off randomly and nothing really happened after the fight scene. The Iron Man cameo wasn't even remotely what I wanted from it. But the movie was fairly entertaining.

Re:An Idea

Wall-E - 6.5/10

I had such high hopes for the latest from the mighty giant that is Pixar Animation. They disappointed me. First off, this is a very sweet and romantic love story. Not exactly the kind of movie kids want to see, and I don't think ANY kids will enjoy this. It's long-winded, preachy, and downright boring at some points. In the first hour, there is no dialogue, in the traditional sense at least. Wall-E is a pretty entertaining little character, pratically cute in some of his funnier bits. But I think they relied on him too heavily.

And as soon as they reach the Axiom, where the movie stays for mostly the rest of it, it becomes very muddled. There's a few subplots that didn't do too much except pad the running time or preach to the audience like they were retards. They had a good message and all, but they hammered it home a little too much.

Still worth a viewing at least once, if only for the pretty funny short that precedes it, "Presto". I think Wall-E would've been as good as Presto if it was as short as it.

Do not bring a child to see this though, they'll probably fall asleep pretty quickly.

Kill me now, but I liked this movie. Apparently the idea was Mike Myers intentionally made a stupid movie (he based it upon some of his father's favorite movies, who was a fan of 1960's UK Carry On-esque comedies) but also made a personal movie in the process (the guru elements are based upon an actual spiritual journey that Myers went on after his father's death and his friendship with Deepak Chopra and the hockey elements are based upon Myers' fandom of the Toronto Maple Leafs and their inability to win a Stanley Cup since 1967). Some people won't appreiciate the low-brow humor but I enjoyed it throughout and so did the small crowd (including my mother and sister) that I watched it with. This is obviously not meant to win awards but is entertaining. But I also liked Hudson Hawk so who am I kidding.

When 900 years old you reach... ah, never mind.

Get Smart - 9/10

Absolutely hysterical. Carell is just brilliant, and I was engaged the whole way through.

Incredible Hulk - 8/10

I'm just not into this character as much as most other superheroes, so there's where that extra point went bye-bye. On the whole, though, a very good film, with good acting, chases and a terrific fight scene. Oh, and Robert Downey Jr.

Also:

The Eye - 6/10 (just saw it on DVD)

This one surprised me. For the first hour-plus, it was just another average horror film, but the way it ended redeemed it a lot, in kind of an X-Files-meets-Medium kind of way. I'd recommend it, but only barely.

Hopefully, Wall-E and Wanted this weekend.

Wanted - 8/10

I read the graphic novel and I knew they were straying from that, so my expectations were pretty low for this. And I was surprised to say the least, this movie is ALMOST as cool and badass as the book. Which is still pretty fucking cool. They switched up some of the plot, but they kept the main gist of the novel and characters about the same.

Whoever this director is, the Russian guy - he def has a future in American action movies. The camerawork is fan-fucking-tastic all throughout this thing, that's prolly the thing that made it better and better. James McAvoy is convincing as both the loser and the badass assassin. Jolie is acceptable as Fox, everyone else does the job.

My only problem is how much of the movie is devoted to his training and not the actual story/reason they're training him. But that is good in a way, since they'll have the entire sequel with all the origin stuff out of the way.

And we do get to see a full ass shot of Jolie.....

Shaymalan is finished (everyone says Mike Myers is finished but I think he can pull a Bill Murray with his career, meanwhile M. Night should say "Good night" to his career). I'm surprised that Fox didn't take the film away from him and reshoot the whole thing with another director...as a comedy. Because it's only watchable as a comedy.

Re:An Idea

Wanted 9/10

This film is right up there with Iron Man for me, I think alot of people will underestimate or discount it because there is not robot suit. I would say it is a perfect summer blockbuster - great action, a unique take on the usual "age old guild of assassins" story, and most important unusual methods. It was the un-matrix, matrix... if that makes any sense.
As a Comic book fan, I was happy to see the film maintain a comic book feel at times without going Ang Lee...
Ultimately, it would have been an 8 just for being a kickass, high quality action film, but what pushed it over to a 9 was two things:
1) BRILLIANTLY cynical, pessimistic, and sarcastic take at the beginning of the movie - it completely took me by surprise right off the bat, in a good way. The writing on that, mainly monologues, was extremely good - it takes serious talent from both the writer and the actor to make this not just come off whiny and annoying, and they pulled it off.
2) They did not shy away from blood and gore, but they did it in unusual ways. Watching people get shot in bullet time instead of dodging bullets is a much better use I think :D

Really great movie, Its definitely going to join my small collection when it comes out on DVD.
