GEEZER'S DEFINITIVE TOP 101 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

Ok.. So I finally finished compiling and putting the list in order. Damn was it hard. It was literally painstaking. Especially when it got to around the top 35 films. Now because I want to be different, and because I am going to build anticipation and keep everyone (who actually cares) guessing, I am only going to release the list 5 movies at a time. I will update it every day with 5 more until the top 10 which I will reveal one at a time. Most of you should know by now what the top couple films on the list will be, but if you have forgotten, you will have to wait to be reminded. If there are any glaring absenses from the list, well then I probably havent seen that particular film. Or I just don't like it as much as these 100. Again, these are my 100 favorites, not the 100 best. I hope you enjoy the list starting with numbers 100-96.

101. A Christmas Story
100. Rush Hour
99. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
98. Snatch
97. Mission: Impossible II
96. The Bad News Bears

Feel free to discuss, ridicule and hate me for not just posting the list all at once. But hey, its my baby, I get to choose how I want to reveal it

Aww, how can any person who was ever a child not have A Christmas Story on their list? "You'll shoot your eye out kid. Ho Ho Ho."

Nice twist Geez. Are you going to simply edit your first post with the next part or post a new 5? If you are doing it that way I think you are trying to catch up with Herald in post count. LOL

Although I have to say I am sad to see Eternal Sunshine so far down but at least it made it. I think we do have to remember age when looking at these lists. I was thinking that MI:2 was an odd choice also but then I remembered that Geez is 10 years younger than me. When MI:2 came out he was a teenager (barely) so I understand. I have Best of the Best on my top 100 for the same reason. I was 12 when it came out and practicing martial arts so it was one of my favorites.

I will try to keep that in mind with the other lists as well for those whose age I know.

I plan on making a new post so everyone doesnt have to go back to page one for each update. It has nothing to do with post count, except it would be cool if it coincidentally was my 1000 that ended the list. I'd have to be quite busy posting on other threads to do that though. And you are righ Donte, I was 12 when I first saw it in theaters. I actually saw it before the first one. That may be why I like it better. I just think it has the best storyline and the motorcycle scene is nothing short of awesome. And about Eternal Sunshine, I almost left it off, but I had to include it because it was just so good. Just not quite as enjoyable and rewatchable as some of the others. I've only seen it twice, but I do love it and couldn't leave it off. And as far as A Christmas Story goes, I've seen it maybe more than any other film, just because I watch it a couple times every Christmas. It's great.

Do you really think age has that big an influence? I was born in the same year as Geezer (87) and i thought it was crap. Personal taste has little to do with age i believe.

No offense Geez, i was just trying to make a point about age, i'm not trying to do a personal attack or anything, i'm sorry if it came out that way.

Anyway, I'm doing a totally blind 3 movie guess for next on you list and i'm going with; The 13th Warrior, Comando, and Liar Liar..

Very cool, geeze. It's like one of those VH1 Top 100 countdowns, where they reveal only twenty per hour.

Here's my take on your worst of the best:

#100. Christmas Story - okay, we were all kids once, I'll give you that one.
#99. Rush Hour - the only really good one of the bunch. "Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth??" Still works today.
#98. Eternal Sunshine - just couldn't get throught it. Too mind-fucky for me.
#97. Snatch - classic.
#96. MI:2 - my least favorite of the three, but not bad. Typical Woo.

My bet for #95: Good Will Hunting.

I will tell you this, you aren't even close (I've only seen Liar Liar out of the 3) and Shryke jumped the gun on his call. Thats all I'll say on that. I think you may be missing my point. The fact that you're calling A Clockwork Orange one of the best books ever implies that you enjoyed it. And you're welcome to that opinion.

My point was that there's a difference between acknowledging importance and actually liking. It's like Time Magazine's "Person of the Year." They can name Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Ayatollah Khomeini as being important and influential, but that doesn't mean they like them.

I don't think we shoudl distinguish between what think is great and what we think is enjoyable.

That would just mean we're buying into the pretension of cinema. If you think Citizen Kane is a great film but you don't enjoy it... then you don't think it's a great film. Just be honest about it. I don't see a point of having two lists... films I enjoy... and then films I think are great just because Sight and Sound etc says so.

You're right Becs, film is quite like music, it';s all about taste. I think there's more ground for arguing your side with cinema, as it's based on a story and a narrative, but I'm not going to say Mozart wrote masterpieces. I don't care what others say. It doesn't appeal to me. You can get as technical as you want but it doesn't matter, as that music doesn't fit my criteria as to what makes music good.

I think the biggest issue is rewatchability. I just watched There Will Be Blood a few days ago. I thought it was a terrific movie, awesome character study, incredible conflict and absolutely pristine acting and cinemetography. Technically, it was everything PT Anderson could have hoped to achieve from a film-making standpoint. But I am not going to want to sit down and watch it over and over. That was really the determining factor in my list, and there are a lot of films that are great from a technical standpoint that are on it, because I do want to watch them over and over. But yes, I can apreciate a film but not want to run out and buy the dvd or watch it again and again. The films on my list are the films that I could watch all the time no matter how many times I've seen them. And the further the film is up the list, the more I'd rather watch that film than any other behind it.

GEEZER'S DEFINITIVE TOP 100 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

Geez, an interesting list so far, and some films which would probably make my worst 100 movies, but hey, that's why we are doing these lists: to find our own personal favourites!

Regarding A Christmas Story, I think this movie is loved mainly by Americans, as they have grown up on it. Its one of those movies which just are not shown very often outside the US. I first watched it when I was 13, and fell in love with it. So it doesn't matter what age you see the movie, which I think Donte presumed, A Christmas Story is just a classic analogy of a typical family with all their flaws and quirks. I watch it every year now that I have the DVD and it never ages! And I want a leg lamp!

As for Eternal Sunshine, it is a very good movie, but I prefer Gondry's other movie Science of Sleep, which in a year or so may make my top 100 list. Wayne's World is a classic and it was hard to leave off my list, and I hope you include X-Men 2 as well, as that was a much better movie than the first one.

One thing though, nice concept, but I hate the idea of five films a day, its just too agonising to wait that long!! You like the keep the anticipation high eh!

Geez, an interesting list so far, and some films which would probably make my worst 100 movies, but hey, that's why we are doing these lists: to find our own personal favourites!

Thats exactly right, and trust me, there are worse movies to come. I love seeing the reactions. I would never say "oh my god how can you not like this movie?" I know people have very different tastes and thats totally cool.

So it doesn't matter what age you see the movie, which I think Donte presumed

He was actually referring to Mission Impossible 2, as I saw that when I was young and really drawn to the action sequences. He was just saying that you can see a movie as a child or teenager and love it so much that it sticks on your favorite list as you grow older, and I think that is pretty accurate.

As for Eternal Sunshine, it is a very good movie, but I prefer Gondry's other movie Science of Sleep, which in a year or so may make my top 100 list. I haven't seen the Science of sleep, nor have I even heard of it. Wayne's World is a classic but I actually think Wayne's world 2 is the better of them, its coming soon. I have to apologize Surfer, but I liked the original X-Men better than the second. I just thought the story gripped me better. Once again, personal preference. So I will not keep you waiting to see where it falls, because it is not there. To keep you guessing on that would be just plain mean.

Hey it was that agonizing to actually put the list together. So I might as well get some real use out of it. The way I see it, this way people can react to each individual film as I release them, rather than the list as a whole. It creates more discussion that way. If I only give people 5 a day, then people can focus in on those 5, and actually look forward to the next day when they get the next 5. That is if anyone actually cares. But I think the reaction so far has been positive so I'm going to keep slowly rolling them out. Like I have been saying, stay tuned!

Yup. For years I heard how amazing Garden State was, then I watched and was more then disappointed. Maybe it was because I saw The Last Kiss first, but well no. But really, it wouldn't appear on either of a best list or a favorite list because I hated it. I can't really name a movie that I like and wouldn't want to watch again. I don't watch movies like they are paintings. I look at every detail, I memorize the actor's and actresses performances, I don't know. I've got Dogville sitting right next to Borat on my DVD rack.

Still gotta disagree. "Greatness" doesn't just mean "because Sight and Sound says so." Great could mean that it changed the way movies are made, distributed, etc. "The Jazz Singer" had a phenomenal impact on the movie business. If "great" equals "important," then it belongs on a list somewhere. But it's painfully dull to actually sit down and watch, and I don't know that anybody under the age of 90 would put it on a "favorite" list.

Is it just semantics? Different shades of the word "great"? Dunno.

I do appreciate your argument, though. One thing I've noticed as I refine my own "Best Movies" lists annually (my one OCD weakness) is that the farther I get away from film school, the more I'm able to admit to myself that I love "West Side Story" and still don't really get "Taxi Driver."

The definition I try to use is one I read from Roger Ebert, but I'm pretty sure he was quoting somebody else: "A great movie is one I can't imagine living the rest of my life without seeing again."

#92. Didn't see it.
#91. Two Mike Myers films so close together? Well, with this one it's OK. This was such a great surprise at the time, very refreshing.

Maybe that's why I don't quite get that distinction of "Best Films" and "Favourite Films", because when I make a list of what I think are the best films, they also are my favorite films. I don't put a single film on it that did not leave a huge mark on me, that did not make me change as a film watcher. That I did not genuinely, fully enjoy watching, even if a few of them were hard but deeply moving. :D

Shryke I highly recommend watching U-571. It is one of the best World War 2 films I have ever seen and like I said, when it first came out it was my favorite movie. Matthew McConaughey's best role in my opinion. very very good movie. I also disagree on your point about Wayne's world being the best SNL related movie, I have another very high up on my list, and I'm not talking about Wayne's World 2, as that falls in at the number 90 spot:

101. A Christmas Story
100. Rush Hour
99. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
98. Snatch
97. Mission: Impossible II
96. The Bad News Bears
95. X-Men
94. Wayne’s World
93. U-571
92. Shrek
91. Wayne’s World 2

90. Cool Runnings
89. Mrs. Doubtfire
88. Home Alone
87. Dumb and Dumber
86. The Poseidon Adventure

It was always a running question for me which Wayne's World movie I preferred. They were always so close in my mind, both really great. I just decided that I like the second one slightly more, so it falls 3 spots higher. I want to see anyone else with Cool Runnings on their list! I love that movie, goes back to the childhood thing. I could watch it any day to this day, it is great!

And chien, each one of these films has left a great mark on me, but hasn't necessarily changed me as a film watcher. I think you look at films more as a work of art, rather than just a medium of entertainment. There is nothing wrong with that, its just a different way of looking at films, and obviously results in different movies being considered great or even good.

Films ARE works of Art ! Of course Geezer !!
The minute you stop thinking of cinema as an art, that's when it's in danger. In some cases it can be just the art of entertaining, but even that is an art. It must be considered an art, because if it's not, the business takes over the quality and the talent.
Film is a craftsman's work. Even films you might consider as just entertaining. Heck, Dumb & Dumber is a crafstman's work. Farrelly Bros are good filmmakers.
You have to see art in everything. If you don't, life gets ugly.

Agreed, Chein. Everybody has a different taste in art though. I dont think people should distinguish between great and favorite either. I understand that people can think that a movie was a great movie, but they didnt enjoy (like) it. People just need to admit it. For example, I thought No Country was a greatly made and well acted movie but i didn't like it. Then on the other end, At World's End, I agree it could of been made better, but i really liked it. Another example, Assassination of Jesse James, most everybody would agree that its a well made movie, and I thought it was amazing.

What i'm trying to say is people just need to admit if they liked the movie or not.

UDM, I think you just proved my point. Just because you didnt like a movie doesn't mean it isn't great, and just because you did like it doesn't make it great. You're point about No Country is key to my arguement. You would never put it on a list of your favorites, but you can acknowledge it one of the better films that has been made. I would never argue that from a film-making standpoint that Wayne's World is a masterpiece. But I laugh my ass off every time I see it. The "best" movies take into account all the elements of film, the acting, the cinematography, the Oscar calibur films. Shryke put it best, The "best" movies show up at the Oscars, the "favorite" movies show up at the MTV Movie Awards. I would definitely say There Will Be Blood was a terriffic film from every aspect of film-making. But I wouldn't include it as one of my favorites, because I don't feel the need to ever see it again after the first viewing, as I have said before. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this. I don't think anyone is going to budge on their position. It is just all about an attitude towards watching a film. Different films try to accomplish different things. I can appreciate a film that accomplishes what it set out to do, or makes me think about a message and moves me emotionally. But the films that make my list are the ones that simply entertained me more. Thats what I consider to be my favorite. Of course there will be films that accomplish both, like Schindler's List, American History X and No Country for Old Men. These films all make my list. Its just a different taste and a different take on watching movies. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this is mine. How's that for rambling?

#90. I liked WW2, but not as much as the first one. As to what might be your favorite SNL film of all time, what could it be? Do you consider The Blues Brothers to be a "sketch"? If so, that'd be my guess. (And by God, if it turns out to be The Ladies Man, or It's Pat, or Night at the Roxbury, or friggin' Stewart Saves His Family, God help me, I will track you down and use harsh language on you.)
#89. Absolutely wonderful movie. I could watch that over and over again. And have.
#88. Also very good.
#87. Also also very good.
#86. I can see the comic appeal of this one, but to me it was just... well, dumb. And not in the good way. I did like the very last scene, though, it was hysterical (with the babes on the bus).

Re:GEEZER'S DEFINITIVE TOP 100 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

I think we need to distinguish what we've all been referring to as great, and something else. Great is a term of taste, like good, enjoyable, entertaining, etc. I think a lot of you seem to be distinguishing between a film you enjoy, and a film that is not so much "great", but rather it is important to the history and progression of cinema in some way.
I absolutely hate Easy Rider, but it did change cinema for the better, allowing low-budget to get mass distribution. Someone else mentioned The Jazz Singer, etc.

So Geez, just because you don't like a movie does indeed mean you don't think it's great. However, you may not be able to deny that it affected cinema in some way.

To be honest, I've never met one, but if I did meet someone who only included films in their Top 100 because of their importance in cinema's history, I'd punch them. Well, not really, but such a person would be forgetting the most important aspect of cinema.... to entertain an audience. Now, everyone has a difference idea of what's entertaining, which is where the disagreements start. But that's the fun part.

Exactly numbersix. It's one thing to acknowledge what a film or group of films may have brought to cinema, it's another thing to find them great on a personal level.
But there is absolutely no interest in putting up a list of such films, as anyone can do so. It's easy to spot films that have made cinema evolve in good ways.
What's more interesting is to come up with films that made us, you, me, evolve as a spectator, as a film buff, as a human being. And that includes films that may be primarly entertainment of course. Sometimes, a good, well made entertainment can be as important cinematographically as an important auteur's film.

So Chien, we have agreed all along. What I meant in my arguement of best vs favorite is exactly what you just said. I think that this type of list as you describe here, is exactly what I mean by a "best" films list. Now of course some of these will also cross over into my favorite list, but clearly not all of them. Best films are the ones that are universally reckognized for cinematic achievements. Favorite films are what you get the most enjoyment out of. End of story.

Yes Geezer, but what you don't want to understand (lol) is I do not recognize what YOU call a "Best List" as a "Greatest films" list. Because in my opinion, you can only call a film "one of the greatest" if you have PERSONALLY enjoyed watching it on a deep level, while what YOU call a "Best list" is a film for which you feel no passion, no desire to see again... only a technical quality. And THAT, to me, has nothing to do with what I call "The greatest".

So you can't show respect to a film that you may not have enjoyed even though it was everything that the director wanted it to be, was critically acclaimed and and it is an important film in cinematic history? That seems pretty arogant that you cant reckognize greatness because you didn't personally like it so much. I mean I don't like the Godfather and it is nowhere on my list, but I reckognize its importance to cinema. I know you totally won't get this analogy because you are French and don't follow baseball, but anyone in America will. I personally despise the New York Yankees, absolutely hate them, I am a die-hard Red Sox fan. But I can respect them as the greatest baseball franchise of all time, as they have won more championships than any other team. I can reckognize greatness even when it doesn't appeal to me. It is a respect issue. That is where becs analogy to classical music comes in. That is the best I can do in arguing the point, and I really don't want to beat a dead horse any longer. This thread is supposed to be about my list, not the semantics of best vs. favorite.

Re:GEEZER'S DEFINITIVE TOP 100 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

It's all a matter of point of view Geezer. All a matter of taste.
Greatness is one thing. But my take on the subject is that Art is not an objective thing. It's subjective. Films are not an objective thing to enjoy, to like, or to find great. It loses all its sense if you don't make a film, or a musical tune, or a painting, your own.
There will always be someone else in the world, your neighbour, your sister, or a guy living at the other side of the planet, to find greatness where you don't. So what I say is, praise and respect the films YOU want to praise and respect. The films YOU enjoy the most. And not those which MUST be, or those for which you'll find an admirer anyway. That's why for me, there will always only be on list, the list of my favorite films, the ones I find to be the best.

Sorry if you think it's just beating a dead horse. I enjoyed our conversation very much actually

I have too, Chien, but at this point all the points have been made, and if the arguement continued it would just be repeats of what has previously been said. All I can say, is that with my list, you can rest assured that these films are all of the films that I enjoy the most, and the ones that I want to watch over and over. So this list has nothing to do with this arguement. I made this list exactly how you would make yours, with the films that I enjoyed most, regardless of "importance" or the "technical" aspect of film. I do find that there is a difference, but this list is the one that is all about my own personal tastes. In the case where there have been remakes (unfortunately this is the case more often than not) you should probably specify which version you are talking about - though I can only assume you mean the original Poseidon Adventure as the new one was utterly ridiculous... just for clarity's sake.

A Knight's Tale is a great pick, I am so torn about it myself, such a great movie, but just way too many to fit into a top 100!

Re:GEEZER'S DEFINITIVE TOP 100 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

So today we start out with a couple comedies that are my favorites of all time that to a lot of people could be considered some of the stupidest movies of all time. The first time I saw Kung Pow! (and basically every time after that) I have absolutely laughed my ass off. I absolutely love it, no matter how bad people say it is. Team America is just more of the genius that is Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Animal House is a classic and John Belushi is a legend. Armageddon is an incredibly fun ride and I watch it basically every time I find it on tv. And a much more serious movie that is also amazing, Like I said Shryke, you jumped the gun on this pick, but yes it is on the list, at number 76.

101. A Christmas Story
100. Rush Hour
99. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
98. Snatch
97. Mission: Impossible II
96. The Bad News Bears
95. X-Men
94. Wayne’s World
93. U-571
92. Shrek
91. Wayne’s World 2
90. Cool Runnings
89. Mrs. Doubtfire
88. Home Alone
87. Dumb and Dumber
86. The Poseidon Adventure
85. A Knight's Tale
84. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
83. The Lion King
82. Hot Fuzz
81. Team America: World Police

80. Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
79. Animal House
78. Armageddon
77. Good Will Hunting
76. Gladiator

#80. I can see the appeal, but I don't share it. At all.
#79. The first one you've had where I question your taste. This film was one of the stupidest I've ever seen (and not in a good way).
#78. A classic, in every sense of the word. FOOD FIGHT!!!!!
#77. Helllll yeah!! Great watch, and Buscemi was awesome (uh, Steve, that is).
#77. Well, I almost picked it right... only 18 spots off.

Russel Crowe's best, my all time favorite western, the only Pirates I have seen because I really have no desire to see the sequels but I love the first, just heard both sequels suck whereas everyone I know likes this movie, Borat is the definition of comedic gold and Billy Madison is classic Sandler, not his best, but way up there.

It is weird indeed, undeadmonkey. Comedy is the hardest thing to appreciate from one culture to another. It's the hardest genre to make travel around the world.
I know American comedies are rarely big successes in France. Unless you've got Jim Carrey in it, or a very strong premise, they usually flop.
Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell movies never make a dime at the box-office in France, WHEN they are released (quite sometimes they're not !).

And I happen to like a lot of American comedies. But I'm one of the few in France !

#75. A well-acted, well-shot MAN's movie. What more could you ask for?
#74. You are correct, one of the classic Westerns of all time.
#73. The sequels didn't suck QUITE as bad as you've led on, IMHO, but the first was still the best.
#72. Don't like SBC at all, but that's just me.
#71. That was Adams' first big solo project, right? The one that got the ball rolling? It was okay, not one of his best. Happy Gilmore was much funnier to me.

Seriously? Seriously? Billy Madison is a classic Shryke. The principal smackdown is one of the most memorable lines in comedic film, right up there with "Bueller? Bueller?Anyone?" - then again that could just be because my raid leader in WOW plays it over Vent whenever someone says something long and stupid...

Principal: Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Billy Madison: Okay, a simple "wrong" would've done just fine.

In this update I start with one of the most underrated (in my oipinion) movies of all time. I just think Orange County is a gem of a film that not too many people I know give a lot of credit for. And the main character reminds me a lot of myself. Cloverfield is the newest edition to the list, I know a lot of people hated it but I absolutely loved it. Se7en needs no explanation. The Patriot is another underrated movie (the Mel Gibson one). Superbad is the next of the 2007 movies to make the list. It was just comedic genius and a nice surprise, I didn't expect that much from it (and a nice boost to everyone who had it on their slates as well.. seems so long ago that I had it in my very first season for 2 bucks).

I haven't commented on any of these "cult" lists until now. So I'm just gonna start here, before it gets nutso!

Also, my comments are not meant to be breakthroughs of any kind. I'm just saying what comes to mind.

100. Good story. This is also part of the X-mas tradition, as well as It's A Wonderful Life. Sad what happened to Bob Clark.

99. This was hysterical at the time, but now it's old. Jackie and Chris just have great chemistry together. I find it really funny that Chris was one of the highest paid actors, and yet he hadn't done anything between Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3.

98. This movie, when I create my list, will have one of the highest placements. This movie means a lot to me. Sad to see it so low on your list.

97. Have yet to see. Have heard good things.

96. Okay, no. That's all I'm going to say. Just doesn't belong on best ever lists.

95. Have yet to see.

94. I personally like X-Men 2 better.

93. I recently rewatched this movie and found it more awesomer than ever.

92. Never saw. Have no intention on seeing.

91. Great movie. Nice to have an animated movie for both adults and kids.

90. Haven't seen this one. I forgot that there was a Wayne's World 2, until I saw this list (does that mean anything?)

89. Haven't seen. Want to.

88. Very nice movie. I loved this movie when I was a kid. It was very touching.

87. Another great kids film! I so wanted to have a house to myself and create all those traps. Shame what happened to Maculey Culkin's career.

86. Such a classic! This is dumb comedy done the smart way.

85. Is this the new or old version?

84. Good movie. Not the best. Paul Bettany nekkid!

83. Yes, yes, yes. I loved all of Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns.

82. Gosh. Still makes me cry today when Mufasa dies. I feel slightly spoiled that I grew up when all the good Disney movies came out (Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King all came out before I turned 10).

81. Really want to see. Will have to borrow from my roommate

80. Heard about the puppet sex. That's the extent of my knowledge of this film.

79. Heard iffy things. Not big on these kinds of films

78. Yes! Just a classic slapstick comedy! Even if people haven't seen, they know of this film. John Landis did a great directorial job on this.

77. Hmmm....not a big fan of this movie. I can see why people like it though.

76. Haven't seen it in a while. Will have to brush up on it. Robin Williams was great in this role though.

75. I know it's gotten all kinds of awards and such, but I don't really have an interest in seeing this movie. Maybe for the fact it has Joaquin Phoenix in it, but other then that I have no desire to watch this.

74. The combo of Robert Redford and Paul Newman is enough to see this film.

73. Who would've thought that it took the quirky Johnny Depp to make a pirate movie profitable? Anybody? If you did, then you made a bajillion dollars.

72. Very niiicceee!

71. Not on my greatest, but certainly on one of my funniest.

70. I was expecting more from this movie. Some of the characters bored me.

69. I think it was a great concept. Not on my list of greats though.

68. Hell to the yes! Freeman, Pitt, and Spacey at some of their bests.

67. Meh. Thought it was long and overbloated.

66. Great comedy. A little long though. What's with Apatow's comedies being an extra 1/2 than they need to be?

These 5 seperated from the list as a whole actually make a nice little package. You have the first and third Bourne movies, the 2 instant classics of the series in my opinion, as the bread of a really tasty sandwich. The meat are three films that most would consider to be amongst the best films ever made. I obviously agree with that assessment, as they each show up here on my list of favorites.

I just realized a HUGE oversight in my list that is going to require me to revise the entire thing. I don't know how this happened, as I put so much effort into not letting it happen. It is just too big for me to not fix it. I left out one of my favorite movies, that will rank somewhere in the top 25. I'm going to have to drop out A Christmas story and adjust everything else down one. It will not really make that big of a difference, its just now you will know my list to number 101, instead of 100. I will edit the previous posts accordingly, and I will let you know whcih film caused the fuss when it comes up. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I can't let this go. You will all get 6 new films tomorrow, and we should be all caught up then! I hope no new readers look at this and get all kinds of confused when the comments dont match up.

Alright as promised 6 new films for today, and now we should be all caught up. The Last of the Mohicans is a film that I am really glad we had to watch in school, it has really stuck with me well after, just terrific. Cinderella Man should have won Best Picture a couple years ago but the Academy sucks. Can't go wrong with Braveheart. Shaun of the Dead is just hilarious. Gone Baby Gone really absolutely blew me away when I watched it recently. Just a thoroughly enjoyable film with a terrific ending. Further proof that last year was a terrific year for movies. And Finally, The Mummy, I have seen more times than I can count and it is a completely fun ride, exhilarating and gripping to the end. The sequel wasn't all that great but the first is a classic for me.

GEEZER'S DEFINITIVE TOP 101 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

Liked a couple of those - Last of the Mohicans/ Braveheart but would never consider buying them on dvd. The Mummy as you mentioned is a fun ride, a popcorn movie which, if it was on tv would watch for the pure entertainment value. But it would never be a favourite of mine. Shaun of the Dead is a classic in the making. I have made my thoughts clear on how much of a genius I think Edgar Wright is on here a few times, and Im glad to see a few of you Yanks can appreciate his work too. Haven't seen Gone baby Gone yet, hasnt been released over here. Wouldn't watch Cinderella Man even if I was tied to a chair and had my eyes held open to watch such horrible images. I just can't stand Russell Crowe, never have, never will. He alone affects my interest in films. He came very close to stopping me watching LA Confidential.

By the way Geez, your editing of your list just goes to show that no matter how long you prepare and analyse your favourite movies - and from what we know this has been going on for a number of months - there are always movies you will forget about. That's why I mentioned that my list was a list of favourites at that specific time. Im sure I'll think about more movies in the coming weeks which I find scandalous to have left off. But I agree with UDM, your list does exactly what it says on the tin, most of these films are pure entertainment movies, and Im glad you haven't been affected by popular opnion on what makes a movie great. As this is a list of YOUR favourites, and they are all very entertaining movies at least.

#61. Don't remember much about it, haven't seen it in over ten years.
#60. Absolutely LOVED this film. It should have done SO much better. Crowe was stellar, Giamatti was perfect.
#59. Another AMAZING film. One of the few mega-epics that I can watch over and over again, anytime, anywhere.
#58. Hilarious. Just hilarious.
#57. Wasn't quite as blown away as you, but it was quite good.
#56. Totally agree, a thrill-ride from beginning to end.

Re:GEEZER'S DEFINITIVE TOP 101 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

Well, well, well. Your warnings about how I would not like your list may have been wrong geezer

I love Shaun of the Dead of course (who doesn't ???!!!)
The Last of the Mohicans happens to be one of my favorite modern epic, violent and graceful, with Mann' expertise behind the camera, a genius score, and Day-Lewis as strong as ever in the lead.
And there's Gone, Baby, Gone, which definitely was one of the most pleasant surprise of 2007, a thoughtful, intelligent, sharp, and well acted drama.

One the other hand I don't really care about The Mummy, Braveheart or Cinderalla Man. Not bad films, but really not my cup of tea. Ron Howard is, in my opinion, much toooverestimated in the US. He makes OK films,
but nothing more.Cinderella Man was fine, but so forgettable. And A Beautiful Mind was absolutely unwatchable. Just like The Da Vinci Code.
Apollo 13 and Ed TV were nice.

#55. Great movie, giving Martin his well-deserved Oscar. Not sure I could watch it many more times, though.
#54. My favorite film of 2006. "Perfect"?! geeze, given that that film has generated such a wide array of opinions, it's good to know that you and I share the same opinion about this awesome, awesome story. I think it's the best crime thriller since The Usual Suspects.
#53. If only to give credit to whoever came up with the name "Clubber Lang."
#52. Haven't watched it lately, but it was a staple of my teens and early 20s.
#51. I actually like FOTR more than TTT, but all three were masterpieces. "You.... SHALL NOT... PASS!!!!" Great stuff.

What Kubrick did with Full Metal Jacket was just so spot on and so chilling it was an absolute masterpiece. Jurassic Park, who can argue against such an awesome premise? Plus its Spielberg. Rocky 2 I list as my third favorite Rocky film, but they are all pretty close together, I love the first 4 so much. Remember the Titans is one I have seen many many times and it still gets me every time. Denzel is the best actor working today, and he carries this really great film, who knew at the time that Disney could do sports? And a lot of people may disagree on Gone in 60 Seconds but damn it I LOVE that movie. Such an awesome idea and Nic Cage is perfect in his role.

GEEZER'S DEFINITIVE TOP 101 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

quite a variety of films that I love or hate there geez. Full Metal Jacket's first hour is some of the most harrowing cinema ever made. It's so brutal and Vincent D'nofrio is stunning. Jurassic Park, Im suprised you are the first person besides myself I have seen include it on their list. Its such an amazing piece of cinema and I was so glad I got to see it in the cinema. I remember it being a really hot summer in the UK and we were stood waiting outside the cinema for ages trying to see it. Such a great and unforgetable expericence though,

Now onto my hates. Rocky II? I only really ever liked Rock and Rocky 4, but I guess you must be a really big Rocky fan to have 4 of the movies in your top 100!! Remember the Titans? I can;t stand Denzel Washington. I know you like him, but I seriously see him as one of the most overrated actors working today. He seems to do role after role playing the same character. And Gone in 60 Seconds? Thats how quickly I erased that mess of a movie from my brain. Sorry geez, guess that's a few films where we really differ in opinion.

Well geezer there is a notable MAJOR plot change between "Infernal Affairs" and "The Departed", a change that greatly depreciates Scorsese's film. One change that is not worth his talent. Too bad that change was done.

Considering the follow up of your list, I feel sad (lol) to see "Gone in 60 Seconds" in there... What an unnecessary film in my opinion. Not even fun enough to remember it.
I'm not a big fan of the Rockies.
"Remember The Titans" is a film I greatly appreciated. I haven't seen it in a while, but for an american football movie, it was very entertaining.
"Jurassic Park" and "Full Metal Jacket" are two GREAT films. They totally belong here.

I am a HUGE Rocky fan Surfer. I absolutely love them. I grew up on them. They made me want to be a boxer when i was like 8 years old. Now, Rocky 5 would probably be in the top 3 of my worst films of all time list. I haven't seen the new one as I feel it is unnecessary. I love the first 4. You'll have to wait and see which one I choose on top.

I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on Denzel. I think that his characters are perfect. They may not be all that different but what he brings to every role is just impeccable. I will see a movie just because he is in it. That said, there are only two of his films that are actually on my list. That particular thought made me run through my list and see which actors show up the most. Matt Damon and Hugo Weaving tie with 7. Bruce Willis has 6. I can't really count Weaving though because 5 come from The Matrix and LOTR series', and the other two he just plays a voice. So the actors that show up most are Damon and Willis. Denzel is still my favorite though. He is the only actor I will see a movie just because he is cast in it.

And Gone in 60 Seconds was Awesome!

GEEZER'S DEFINITIVE TOP 101 FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME

There are actually quite a few actors that will make me watch any movie they are in. Johnny Depp, Ed Norton, Ray Winstone, Simon Pegg, Julie Delpy, Winona Ryder, Natalie Portman and Audrey Tautou are just a few off the top of my head.

Listing those actors enables me to pretty much guess some of the movies on your list though. I now knwo that all of the Bourne movies will be on there, maybe The Talented Mr. Ripley, Good Will Hunting. With Bruce Willis its gotta be the Die Hard films, Pulp Fiction, Sin City etc.

You got a couple right Surfer but some are completely off, not all of the Bourne movies are on there. Good Will Hunting has already been revealed. You will see...

Simon Pegg is pretty close to making me want to see all of his movies at this point, we'll see if his draw is enough to get me to go see Star Trek, because I otherwise have no interest in it. I love Norton, I'd consider him my second favorite actor, but I wouldn't see any movie he is in. There are no actresses that even come close to being that big of a draw for me. I'm not a huge Depp fan, and I am really put off by the abomination that occured when he and Tim Burton came together in a Satanic ritual and decided to defile one of the greatest films of all time, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. That said, I just watched Blow last night and thought he was phenominal in it.

Don't half blame, you Chien, especially as they snuck into the World Series last year. Fortunately, my Diamondbacks have pounded them handily quite a few times this year and....
