Super-contest of 2008

Hi,

still waitin' 4 Super Leagues, that's why I want to share with you one idea... brilliant or not, you'll see... Shrykespeare thinks that is cool this idea to select until 17th of January 10 movies of 2008 ( with release dates between 01.18-12.31.2008 ) regardless their cost to see who'll be the greatest mogul in life :)

My full idea is something like this:

1. all the moguls have to choose a top 10 blockbusters of 2008, no more, no less; release dates (in US) between: 01.18.2008 (Cloverfield might be the first blockbuster of the year) - 12.31.2008;
2. these movies can't be replaced, once you have chosen'em! if you're unlucky and a movie will have the release date delayed for 2009, your bad.... so look out carefully for the movies who have the release date in December 2008, the WGA is still on strike...;
3. the box offices calculated (TOT$) will be until 02.28.2009, so the movies released in December to have their chance (from December 2008 until end of February 2009 they can do 95-97% of final box offices)…;
5. sign up until: 01.17.2008;
6. the winner announced on 03.01.2009 - is the mogul with the highest total box office.

Waitin' 4 your feedback and your selected top 10 movies.

Regards,
Marius

P.S.: My selected 10 movies are the following:

  1	Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
  2	Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  3	The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
  4	The Dark Knight
  5	Iron Man
  6	WALL-E
  7	Hancock
  8	Kung Fu Panda
  9	The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
10	Madagascar 2: The Crate Escape

P.S.2: waitin' 4 at least the 72 entrants of Super Box Office Leagues ;)

P.S. You have one of my favorite historical names of all time, young man. The Roman General and Consul Gauis Marius is one of the most fascinating figures of all time, and was considered by the citizens of the Late Republic to be the Third Founder of the world's premiere city. (He was also uncle to Julius Caesar -- yes, that Julius Caesar.) Read Plutarch's Lives or, if you're up for something more modern, Erik Hildinger's Swords Against the Senate: the Rise of the Modern Army and the Fall of the Republic, or, if you're up for a rollicking good historical fiction, Colleen McCullough's The First Man in Rome.

Re:Super-contest of 2008

I don't think this is the greatest idea, because mostly everyone's lists are (and will be) the exact same. The price limit forces you to be creative with your choosings, but without that, we'll all have the biggest 10 names in 2008. I mean, it's just kind of redundant.

And I have a suspicion that a majority of the people making lists now will not be around in March 2009 to see if they won this...

But, not to be a killjoy, I present my list:

Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince
The Dark Knight
Iron Man
Hancock
Horton Hears A Who!
Kung Fu Panda
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Sex & The City
Mamma Mia!

Re:Super-contest of 2008

[Pursing lips] Very, very interesting... See, my first reaction was to feel a little like Banks, that "everyone's lists...will be...[the] same." But, you know, there could be as many as fifty films in '08 that have an outside shot at becoming blockbusters, and probably fifteen $200M titles in the mix. Once I realized that, I became very, very excited for this novel, if a little unruly, concept.

So, with 13 entries (excepting rob's original slate -- He was distracted by news that there'll be a going-away party held for him in some Lower East Side loft the third Friday in January), here's how it's all breaking down at this point:

It's pretty much a three-way tie, right now, for which film FM Forum contributors think will be the top title of 2008:

[1] Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - 12 votes (7 first-place) [UPDATED]
[2-tie]  The Dark Knight - 13 votes (2 first-place)
[2-tie]  Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - 13 votes (2 first-place)

So. Over half of contest participants (54%) believe that the fourth Indiana Jones feature will be 2008's top earner, but The Dark Knight and the next-to-last Harry Potter title are the only two movies to occur on every single contestant's list.

Three additional films are on most folks' Top 10 lists:

[4]      WALL-E - 12 votes (1 first-place)
[5-tie] The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - 11 votes [UPDATED]
[5-tie]      Iron Man - 11 votes  [UPDATED]

Personally, I find this really interesting. Iron Man isn't a top-of-the-shelf comics title; no one would call it as well-known as, say, Batman, or Superman, or The Amazing Spider-Man, or The Uncanny X-Men, or, even, The Incredible Hulk. The film featured the all-time unlikeliest of action-film stars (Robert Downey, Jr.) in what must be considered a comeback role, and a relatively untried, unknown director. Plus, other than Disney/Pixar's WALL-E, this is the only title in our top six that isn't a sequel. Could Iron Man be 2008's breakout original smash? Or will it be, you know, Daredevil? And then there's Prince Caspian, which, if you believe our little poll here, must be considered the successor to legendary film franchises Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Will this really be the case, though?

On to the third tier:

[7]      James Bond 22 - 8 votes  (1 first-place)
[8]      Hancock - 8 votes
[9]      Horton Hears a Who! - 7 votes
[10-tie] Kung Fu Panda - 6 votes
[10-tie] Madagascar 2: The Crate Escape - 6 votes

Here, in my opinion, are the REAL surprises. No one should be amazed, of course, that the revitalized James Bond appears in our Top 10 list; it's very nearly a lock to finish high, in fact. But Hancock? The anti-(super)hero thing has been done before, and never successfully; then again, it's never had someone of Will Smith's caliber in the role, and if anyone can pull it off and remain likeable, he can. But I worry about this one. Too much, I think, is being made of I Am Legend's success, and I don't see how this film packs 'em into theaters when, frankly, all the best material will undoubtedly be in the trailer. Also, Hancock won't have any level of rewatchability, which is frankly essential to appearing in the year-end Top 10. Now, Horton Hears a Who! is an interesting choice, some would say, a slam dunk. But I wonder if we're beginning to see some wear on the Jim Carrey - Dr. Seuss brand, and I don't think the repairing of Carrey and Carell will pack quite the punch some folks do. Kung Fu Panda could be this year's Madagascar -- which doesn't bode especially well for that film's sequel. Still, I think there's at least one too many animated films in our current Top 10 list -- four's a crowd with Horton, Panda, Madagascar 2 and, of course, WALL-E, and one or more of these films will be a big, big disappointment. Given that the year-end Top 10 tends to be dominated by sequels, my money's (not) on Kung Fu Panda here.

Next, the also-rans:

[12] The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - 5 votes
[13] Sex and The City: The Movie - 4 votes
[14]     Star Trek - 3 votes
[15-tie] Cloverfield - 2 votes
[15-tie] Speed Racer - 2 votes

I still say both The Mummy sequel and Sex and the City are being incredibly overestimated; the time to make either of these films was several years ago, and modern audiences will frankly even rather see Journey 3D (another bomb) than another Mummy. Expect Mummy to post Resident Evil: Extinction-type numbers (at best), and for Sex and the City to be the biggest disaster to hit New York since, well, Madonna on Broadway. It continues to astonish me, how very little the general public cares about Star Trek, and I think it's possible we'll see a franchise-ending implosion come December. I doubt Cloverfield can monster mash its way into the Top 10; it'll have a HUGE opening weekend, sure, but it'll be gone from the Top 10 in three or four weeks and will finish well short of $180 million. Speed Racer is the one to watch. It could be The Matrix or, then again, it could be Thunderbirds. However, Speed Racer is my dark horse pick of all these films.

...And, finally, the fliers (1 vote each):

[unrank] The Day the Earth Stood Still
[unrank] Get Smart!
[unrank] The Incredible Hulk
[unrank] Mamma Mia!
[unrank] Rambo
[unrank] Tropic Thunder
[unrank] Yes Man

Okay. I love Spielberg, and I love science fiction, but unless he really manages to pull The Rabbit's Foot out of his hat, I think The Day the Earth Stood Still will be a classic miscalculation. Too preachy, too depressing; too Twentieth Century. I don't think Hulk will have many takers, either; I love Ed Norton, too, but they really needed to let a few more years go by before attempting yet another franchise reboot. Audiences haven't forgotten their disappointment in Ang Lee's Hulk, and the biggest reaction this film will provoke is a whole lot of eye-rolling. Mamma Mia! is also going to bomb, and bomb hugely; it has NO audience, folks. This isn't Chicago, Dreamgirls or Hairspray, it's The Producers. Rambo is... overrated. $100M is probably out of reach. That leaves Yes Man, Tropic Thunder and Get Smart! All of 'em could surprise, and I have to say, I love Tropic Thunder's concept, sort of a cross between Galaxy Quest and Apocalypse Now. But the relative failure of the winning Charlie Wilson's War leads me to believe that, unless there's a radical shift in national temperature over the next several months, this film will, like Charlie, die fast and quiet. Yes Man returns Carrey to his Liar Liar / Man on the Moon roots, which could be a good thing, but I frankly doubt it. The man's taken some chances, recently, but none of them were the right role. He needs to get himself out of the headlines for a couple years and figure out what sort of actor he wants to be as he approaches middle-age. Get Smart! is the wild card. I think it'll be a contender for one of the year's Top 10 films; but, then again, I thought Evan Almighty would be one of the biggest films of '07. Thus endeth my unsolicited analysis and sermonizing. For now.

[UPDATED] (For the record, I initially listed my films in alphabetical, not revenue, order. I'll add my rankings shortly, in red. Also for the record, my own #1 pick is WALL-E.)

P.S. Marius (thanks for the heads-up on the typo, btw): I concur with Six's idea. [Laughing] Damn, but we're competitive 'round these parts!

P.P.S. ann, we CAN make this "official," if someone can figure out or ask the FM administrators, how we can get the thread LOCKED before, say, January 18, preventing additional posts or any alterations to prior ones.

P.P.P.S. Everything in this post has now been UPDATED. Thanks, geez.

[Nodding] There's a few of 'em. I see your point, Marius (your Nico-name, btw, and a damned fine one if I do say so myself, friend), but, personally, I suspect that posting comprehensive lists of the "taken" films, is MORE likely to encourage Fantaversians to be creative and to select other titles. This game, this place, ain't for professional sheep, for bipedal lemmings who follow the crowd right off the cliff and are totaly risk-averse. Pointing out that just about every single participant has the same six titles on their lists is a good way to mix things up; everyone here wants to be the one who comes out of nowhere and selects 2008's surprise smash. And no one wants to "win" by playing it safe.

But, hey, I could be wrong.

Super-contest of 2008

@Nico: maybe I was missunderstood... I agree with you... and I always appreciate your constructive posts. I never want to meet any of you in Vegas, too :) but, at a coffee after a good movie to comment it, there's no other better idea... maybe just at the beach - Palma de Mallorca, Seychelles, Hawaii :D

Have you wonder what have you choosen in 2006 for 2007? I think that everyone was bettin' on threequels: Spidey 3, Shrek 3, Pirates 3, Bourne 3 and maybe Rush Hour 3 and of course on: Transformers, Harry Porker 5, Ratatouille and The Simpsons Movie... at least 5 or 6 of these movies on everyone's selected top 10 for 2007...
But how many of you have actually dreamed of more than 200 MM for 300?
National Treasure 2 can surpass the 200 MM mark too and I think that the surprise of this year will be Alvin which can be over The Simpsons Movie...
Wild Hogs and Ghost Rider made more than 100 MM, a mark that was a little surpassed by Evan Almighty and not achieved by Meet the Robinsons (deserved more), Beowulf, Golden Compass, The Heartbreak Kid and Lions for Lambs.

Have you thought of more than 30 movies for the last year' blockbuster? So 23 movies selected so far and maybe other no more than 11 NEW movies to be selected until the end of subscription...

Che sera, sera...

Re:Super-contest of 2008

Nico, I think YOU are understimating Sex and the City. Last year failed to deliver a Devil Wears Prada, and now that target audience are desperate for something else. Sex and the City, mark my words, will be a hit. how much of a hit? That's hard to say, but I can see it surpassing Prada's 124 million.

I think I may be underestimating Wanted, with Jolie for the lads and McEvoy (seriously, am I the only one who thinks he doesn't have the presence to be a lead actor?) for the ladies. I didn't like the trailer, but most guys I spoke to did (seriously, bending bullets???). It is, however, opening against Wall-E, which I see whooping its ass.

Speaking of that, does anyone have any reasoning as to why they think Wall E will do so well and Ratatouille disappointed so much? My thinking is that the robot of Wall E is mroe marketable than a rat, and Wall E is more of a visual (hence accessible) story than Ratatouille.

I thought about Star Trek for a while (and noticed the ladies were all running away), but none of the movies were ever that huge, and even though the franchise is being rejuvinated, no amount of Sylars will make it a huge hit.

I'm taking a wild stab in picking Day the Earth Stood Still. I just thought, sci-fi, heavy on SFX/CGI, with Neo. It should be popular enough. Interestingly, the director Scott Derrickson will also be making Paradise Lost (excuse me while I put my eyes back into my sockets), so it'll be interesting to see how he fares.

I think Iron Man will be a hit, mostly because it's the opening film of the summer. And the trailer had the Sabbath song. Which made me want to see it. I can only pray it's the only song used in the soundtrack. All together now: I AM IRON MANNNNN

Re:Super-contest of 2008

Wow, Nico great analysis. Hope you're getting paid well for all of these well-detailed analyses. (Analyses is a word, isn't it?)

I'm gonna stick with my list, but I personally can't believe I missed Bond 22. Heaps of others had it, but I decided to bypass it. It should be huge, but coming out the same day as Madagscar 2, basically one or the other will do very big business while the other will do only regular big business. For some reason I'm thinking it'll be Madagscar going very big. Don't ask me why though... Bond 22 would be my #11 though. As a side note, if Angels & Demons hadn't been moved to 2009, it'd be a serious contender as well for a #6-#10 spot. Trust me guys, anyone who's read the books can tell you A&D will translate into a film at least 10 times better than the turd that was The Da Vinci Code's movie.

I'm pretty happy that I'm the only one who rates Tropic Thunder as a possible Top 10 flick. In all likelihood it won't make it, but it's my real wildcard. My list would be pretty standard without it, with Bond 22 at #10 instead. Ignoring The Heartbreak Kid, Ben Stiller is still one of the biggest draws in the world, and with a decent film behind him, this should make serious dough. Also, look at the serious star power accompanying him, I'd argue (including cameos) probably the STRONGEST CAST LIST OF ANY FILM IN 2008. Yes, you heard me right. Just try and name one with more starpower.

I'm also not considering the 'war' aspect to it, they're taking the mickey out of it, so people won't think twice about seeing a 'war flick' with Tropic Thunder. An enjoyable popcorn flick is all it's trying to be, and I believe will be how the public will view it.

As for wildcards it's easy to go with comedies like Tropic Thunder, which are a little unquantifiable. Nico was right to point out Yes Men and Get Smart. I'd like to present two more that should also be given consideration (sorry if someone's already mentioned them)...

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS
BEDTIME STORIES

Mainly Pineapple Express though. Oh, and btw Dragonball (Z?) will flop. They should've made a live-action Pokemon movie instead. Yes, that's right, A LIVE-ACTION POKEMON MOVIE!!! It'd be pretty lousy, but a live-action Dragonball (Z?) is an even more ridiculously preposterous idea.

That is all...

So you seriously think The Mummy will only gross $50 million. That's, um... odd. Never underestimate big-budget franchises. The Mummy is a much huger franchise than Resident Evil could ever hope to be. $120 million at the ABSOLUTE WORST IMO.

first, i agree with 6, that sex and the city is being grossly underestimated....i want it to flop - believe me, i do - but i think it'll be the (albeit hated) simpsons movie of 2008....

next, wall-e IS more marketable and i think it should post 'Incredibly Nemoid' numbers....

lastly, the bond franchise was rejuvenated by craig's first outing, IMO, and bond 22 should pocket about 1.2-1.5 times the BO that casino did....

finally, the pineapple express has to be the dark horse of the summer - last year knocked up killed at the BO without apatow's name to drive it....this year, same time, same place - only apatow's already well-known....so this movie could be the wildcard entry for the top 10....

Re:Super-contest of 2008

Okay, delfinasu, here I go.

First, the bleedin' obvious:

1. The Dark Knight
2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
4. Wall-E

I thought about including Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, but 2007 featured three huge superhero flicks, and only one made the Top 10 (at #1, in fact). I think the other two will do okay, given what I've seen (wich in the case of Hulk, ain't much), but I look for both of them to do between $100-$150M, just like FF2, Ghost Rider, and Daredevil. In the Top 25, but not the Top 10. And as for Hancock, I would have to agree with Nico. It's too much of Will Smith too soon after another major hit, and back-to-back $200M movies are rare, if not impossible, for any actor, even Big Willy. Besides, the concept of a down-and-out superhero just rings a bit... I don't know, off for me. (The whale bit in the trailer was hysterical, though. Grin.)

The other safe bets:

5. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
6. James Bond 22

For the simple fact that The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and Casino Royale just did too, too well at the box office to be ignored.

After this, it gets a bit dicey.

7. Madagascar 2: The Crate Escape

There were three animated films in 2007's Top 10, so what, besides Wall-E, has a chance to make a splash? Horton comes out in March, which means it'll have to do numbers equal to 300 to break the Top 10, and I don't think be able to do that. If only it had been given a summer release, I think it could possibly have done close to what the Ice Age films did. I can't wait for Madagascar 2, given how much I loved the original, so I'll give it the nod over Panda, whose characters, at face value, don't look quite as family friendly as Over The Hedge, which barely missed the Top 10 in 2006.

8. Star Trek

I have to say, from what I see on December '08's roster (per Box Office Mojo), there's not much that just jumps out at me. There's almost always ONE big movie that comes out around Christmas time, so which will it be? Given that we know next to nothing about any of these films, it's a tough call... so which one? The Day the Earth Stood Still looks like it could be this year's Golden Compass. Marley and Me looks like it wants to be 2008's answer to Alvin, but I doubt it will be. The Tale of Despereaux looks very intriguing on paper, but I'm not ready to make that call yet. Yes Man also has possibilities, but... ditto. Bedtime Stories could be huge, but I'll get to that in a sec. I find myself having to go with Star Trek, for sentinmental if not intelligent reasons.

9. Cloverfield

I made the call in my column. I said it would come within spitting distance of $200M, and, come hell or high water, I'll stick with that.

Damn, only one left. Hmm, let's see, what's left?

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - Rachel W. is out, Jet Li is in; don't think it'll cross $70M. But then, I said the same thing about Rush Hour 3 AND Die Hard 4...

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army - has a good-sized cult following, but not that big.

Mamma Mia! - I'm not big on musicals, and I'm more than willing to give Dreamgirls and Hairspray their props, but there is no way in hell this is going to crack the Top 10.

Sex and the City: The Movie - No. Just... no.

Tropic Thunder - Damn, I wish there was a trailer out for this... Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Matthew McKindagay playing army? Very intriguing, but I think this will fail to crack $150M.

Rambo - $50M if its lucky, which I would still call a success.

Speed Racer - This looks to psychedelically freakish to be a hit. Yes, the Wachowskis are directing, but it looks more like The Matrix's gay cousin than The Matrix itself. But hey, at least it has a quasi-intelligent chimp.

Well, going back over the Top 10 I have so far, it occurs to me that there is not one live-action comedy in the bunch.

(Note: Wow... did anyone notice that 27 films broke $100M in 2007, eight more than did so in 2006? Just incredible.)

When I consider that Alvin and Wild Hogs were the two top-grossing comedies of the year, it makes me... well, nauseous, to be honest. This was the year of Judd Apatow, but the only thing that looks like it has big-dollar appeal is Step Brothers, which I won't take for the simple fact that I loathed Ferrell and Reilly's last partnership.

I think the biggest comedy will either be Get Smart or something with Adam Sandler in it. As much as I want Steve Carell to do HUGE business, I just can't get Evan Almighty out of my mind. And between Adam's two projects in '08, I am more disposed to take one over the other. So, throwing caution and my last vestiges of grey matter out the window, I am going to choose as my 10th pick:

10. You Don't Mess With The Zohan

Yeah, I know, it looks stupid, but it also looks funny, in the same way that The Longest Yard and Big Daddy looked funny (and in exactly the same way that Chuck and Larry didn't). Adam is typically good for between $120 and $170 million in a summer leading role, and the trailer for this film actually made me laugh. The premise is cute, and I'm all for keeping Rob Schneider gainfully employed (just kidding, barely). I don't have a snowball's chance in the pit of Hades, I know, but I'm going to pick it anyway.

So, my prediction for the Top 10 grossing films of 2008:

The Dark Knight
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Crystal Skull
Wall-E
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
James Bond 22
Madagascar 2: The Crate Escape
Star Trek
Cloverfield
You Don't Mess With The Zohan

So, put that in your smoke and pipe it. Er, well, you know what I mean.

Peace.

Okay, why not, let's give it a try. I'm pretty sure I kinda suck at predicting box-office for big budget movies, but there are a few films that an't miss.
So... I would say the Top 10 could look something like this...

1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
2. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
3. The Dark Knight
4. Wall-E
5. The Chronicles of Narnia : Prince Caspian
6. Bond 22
7. Madagascar 2
8. The Happening
9. Hancock
10. Star Trek

I think given the ultra cool and mysterious pitch of The Happening, it could be Shyamalan's big comeback. I think Hancock will again be huge for Smith, no matter how close was Legend. Smith is Smith.
I think the 4th Jones installment is gonna be huuuuuuuuuge. And I mean Huuuuuuuuuge. Everyone loves the man with the whip, from 7 year-olds to 77 year-olds. And it's Spielberg, and it's still Ford, and it's that new guy LaBeouf. I'm telling you, huuuuuuuuuuge.

There's simply no question in my mind: The Happening will be, hands-down, the WORST wide-release film of 2008, and is probably a lock for the '09 Razzies. It also just might end M. Night Shyamalan's career in Hollywood. It won't top $75M, and just about everyone who sees it will regret it immediately. After being atomized by everyone and everything with The Lady in the Water, I actually tend to think that Shyamalan - who is still, as of today, no matter what you think of some of his films, one of the most amazingly talented storyteller working in Hollywood - has cooked a film that might blow our minds away.
Re:Super-contest of 2008

Chien: I haven't. I've just read the script. Mark my words: What I said about the film will come to pass. This ain't one of my "projections," or "predictions," or "educated guesses." I can say this with the rock-solid certainty of someone who's been a passenger aboard E.L. Brown's fantastic flying locomotive, who's pulled the lever on the TARDIS and materialized in late Summer, who's picked up the VERY early edition of the morning paper and already memorized the Lifestyle section. The Happening will BOMB, and for EXACTLY the reasons I've already specified. Write it down and take it to the bank, my friend. I am that certain.

I agree with everything you say about Shyamalan. I, too, found many, many things worth admiring in Lady in the Water, and have been one of its most ardent defenders, as a bold, unique experiment that ALMOST didn't fail. I think that every single one of his films from Sixth Sense all the way through to The Village was of ever-increasing quality and exceptionality. But I've never read a script with a premise as patently ridiculous, as panderingly trite, as shockingly juvenile, as The Happening, a film that will certainly damage the careers of both its top-billed star (Mark Wahlberg) and its writer / director (Shyamalamaramadingdong). No wonder he had to secure financial backing from Bollywood to get it made. After this film, I'm convinced, no American studio will touch him, at least not for a while. He's already been through one career resurrection; he'll need a priest again soon, or perhaps an exorcist.

I'd love to be wrong, but I'm not. The only League I'll EVER take The Happening in will be the Bankrupts League.

But, if you like, chalk up what I'm saying to arrogance and delusion, or ignorance and illusion, or whatever. I can, after all, remember a time when I was very nearly this "down" on WALL-E. But I'm gonna stick to this bold, uncompromising forecast. We'll compare notes in about five months.

I remain, as always...

[Grimace] Hey, I wasn't looking for applause. Just callin' 'em like I see 'em.

...I don't know if you already know that, but the French is one stubborn people. And I mean STUBBORN. So don't be mad at me, but until I see something really unappealing, I'll keep being excited about The Happening...

They can't be more stubborn than the Irish and American Indian, two bloodlines that, I'm proud to say, positively DOMINATE my own personality and which give me, in addition to a frankly manic immovability and uncompromisingness, a fiery temper, passion, and a love of tobacco (in cigar form). And then I've got a touch of Polish and Russian, which means I also happen to be both a masochist, and patently insane. The rest of me is English, which explains my obnoxiousness, a natural inclination toward pessimism and skepticism, and a pronounced occasional lack of any taste whatsoever (again, I remind you: I worship Starship Troopers).

Know thyself, the sign above the Oracle's door reads, inevitably. Was Latin an invention of the Machines? I wonder... Riddles and enigmas... We are all merely inhabitants of a world designed by anonymous Architects.

J.I.:

...Juno looks like it will break $100 million. That takes the total [of 2007 films which grosses $100M or better] up to 28.

[Nodding] And I've been telling Shrykey for weeks, now, I think 2008 is going to be, hands-down, THE BIGGEST YEAR FOR FILM EVER. Up half a million dollars from '07, methinks, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see THIRTY films in '08 become nine-figure "blockbusters."

The writer's strike, and its effect on the Spring and Summer's prime-time television lineup, will be a big factor in this, I suspect. Even now, the major producers of new scripted content are struggling to put programs on their air... witness the fact that the Peacock network's all-but-forgotten Dateline has now been slated for four nights a week. NBC and ABC do have some new material, notably the Law & Orders and Lost, and a few new series with maybe eight episodes each in the can, but they'll be out of new material by late March, and if the WGA walkout still hasn't been resolved by THEN, then it's going to be a long, bleak Spring and Summer, at least, for the Big Four, as well as basic-cable content providers like TBS, FX, USA and Sci-Fi. Fox has quite a few shows with new eps yet to see the light of day, and a mini-season of The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but its real saving grace will be in American Idol, just as CBS will be temporarily buttressed by Survivor and Big Brother. But this can only last so long, and long before March Madness (another finger in the dam for the Tiffany Network) concludes, viewers will be abandoning the nets in droves. Where will they go? The movies, naturally, the only screen with new content that ISN'T sports or the Presidential election.

Aside: If this insanity continues into late Summer, It wouldn't surprise me at all to see NBC begin cannibalizing series owned by NBC Universal and airing 'em on their "flagship" property. Meaning, if the writers haven't gone back to work by August, look for Season 1 of Battlestar Galactica on NBC in prime time no later than October. (And what a fragrant can o' worms THAT'll open...) Ditto The Shield on Fox. Interestingly, HBO and Showtime are in pretty decent shape for now... HBO, in particular, has three or four new series that it's been holding back, waiting for just this, and Showtime has The Tudors.

Attendance at the nation's movie houses will rise throughout the Spring and Summer; video game and Internet usage will also rise. And even when the strike ends, it's going to take three, four months to ramp up production on your favorite television programs -- sadly, a lot of crews are going to have to be staffed up nearly from scratch, and my feeling is, if this work stoppage goes on long enough, we may lose some of the longest-running (and most expensive to produce) programs altogether, chief among them, ER. (Not that that would be a great loss, or anything.) And then, just as things are getting back to normal, there'll be a SAG strike... but, more on that in a minute.

Back to my original point: The WGA-producers conflict will drive a great many people off their living-room couches and into the theaters, making 2008 a record-breaking year for film grosses, and it won't end when the striking unions return to work, because when television series DO return, a lot of 'em will be of lower quality, at least for a time, and many many people will have moved on, permanently. It took baseball the better part of a decade to recover from its last strike; I don't know, honestly, if broadcast television will EVER recover its viewers. Expect unprecedented turnout at the movies throughout 2008, with the result that ALL boats are lifted and that even mediocre films manage to turn fair-sized profits.

It's next year that worries me. Six months after the studios make peace with WGA, it'll be SAG's turn to shut everything down, and the actors' guild has the ability to sit on the sidelines a lot longer than the far less-compensated writers. I think the studios are making a big, big mistake by releasing so many tentpole titles in '07; they ought to hold a few of them back for next year, because if a SAG strike does come off, no one's going to be doing ANYTHING. Except, perhaps, Michael Moore. So '08 could be The Year of the Foreign Film or, then again, it could be The Year We All Go Online for All Our Entertainment. Who knows, the biggest winners in all this madness could well end up being Bungie Studios, 60 Minutes and YouTube.

...[L]let's make this contest more challenging if u all agree ! The lucky No 1, will have from me one original DVD and I think it isn't too much for each player to give a DVD for the winner. What do u think ??

Sure, Lili, I'm down with that. One qualification, tho: IT MUST BE A DVD PURCHASED FOR $5 OR LESS, and creativity and uniqueness is appreciated. That ought to result in some damned quirky offerings, and a fairly interesting mini-collection.

Whoever wins this better be a big Uwe Boll fan, I'm thinking...

I remain, as always...

Hey, any country whose most celebrated paramour is none other than the legendary Pepé Le Pew, is all right by me. Ooh, l'amour.

Or, to quote another famous French fry, The Merovingian from The Matrix Trilogy: "It is remarkable how similar the pattern of love is to the pattern of insanity." So, then... that would make a nation of "lovers"... what, exactly? [Grin]

Hey, I'm just playin' wit' ya.
Re:Super-contest of 2008

This is domestic (as in US) box office right?

Anyway, if it is, this is my list:

[1] Indiana Jones 4: I don't think it will deserve the number one spot, but i think it will get it. A combination of nostalgia, Spielberg/Lucas, and a strong cast will put this up at around $340 million.

[2] The Dark Knight: This one is what i would like to think would deserve top spot. Theres more than enough hype for this movie, and the marketing campaign for it has been phenomenal (i have a TDK desktop wallpaper already). A super cast with a fantastic director should see this rise to number two with around $317 million.

[3] Harry Potter 6: Very movie-friendly book. Has lots of action, and this time it'll be the only Harry Potter related 'thing' that fans will have until the last movie(s) comes. The story is good, the cast is good to go, the action is there, the humor is there, the intense situations are there. Should make around $309 million.

[4] Chronicles of Narnia 2: Great release date, with a huge amount of anticipation should make this a good box office lock. Alot of people are saying it will do better than Potter, but i seriously doubt that. Should be able to finish with just over $300 million.

[5] WALL-E: Looks cute, it's pixar, and frankly it looks good too. Should be another good time for the family. It should do better than Ratatouille, which incidentally deserved MUCH more, and it should end up around $260 million.

[6] Hancock: Because it's Will Smith in a story about a drunk superhero. How will it not make money? Should top-off at around $230 million.

[7] Madagascar: The first one did brilliantly well and surprised alot of people. The whole cast is back, even the penguins, and it should ride the first installments popularity to a very good $210 million.

[8] Bond 22: Casino Royale has put faith back in the Bond series for alot of people, so you aren't just going for the action alone anymore, the quality should still be there. Casino Royale made around $170, and this one should ride it's good reception to around $193 million.

[9] The Incredible Hulk: They want to re-do the whole project and start fresh. Last time I heard that we got Batman Begins and i'm bloody happy they did. I've always liked Mr.Hulk, and with my favorite actor in the lead role i hope and wish this all the luck in the world. I'm going for a $ 178 million take.

[10] Cloverfield: I'm putting alot of faith in this movie in terms of FM, and i'm hoping it will pay off. First signs say it has the anticipation required to pull off great numbers, and i'm hoping that is true. Most people i know thing it will break the Jan OW record, and i'm hoping that is true as well. Should finish with somewhere around $168 million in domestic BO.

There are some close calls i'd like to mention though. Horton Hears a Who could definitely make lots of money, it looked cheesy to me but you never know with Dr.Seuss. Iron Man looks like it will make a respectable bit of money during it's run. Also, i hope Get Smart does well, i've always liked the TV series, and i like the cast and concept for the movie.

Christ. CBS' midseason lineup reads like a bad Kafka novel adapted into a screenplay by Uwe Boll and Vince Vaughn.

From Variety:

Network bulks up on nonfiction programming

By JOSEF ADALIAN

As remaining supplies of original scripted programming continue to dwindle, CBS is bulking up its reality slate.

The Eye has given series orders to three unscripted shows, including a talent competition featuring celebrities. The network hasn't provided any timetable for when the shows will air, but it's likely all will be ready for broadcast later this season or this summer.

These are the three additions:

"Secret Talents of the Stars," a celeb competition in which famous folks show off their hidden skills (which may range from singing to juggling). Tournament-style skein will air twice a week, with a performance seg followed by a results show.

Robyn Nash and Don Weiner are exec producing for the Eye's inhouse Magic Molehill Prods.

"America's Top Dog" (working title), an hourlong competition series in which dog owners and their pets live together and (Marma)-duke it out with other canine-human teams in a battle to determine the best-trained dog.

R.J. Cutler ("The War Room"), Stu Schreiberg and Stephen Kroopnick are exec producing via Magic Molehill.

"Game Show in My Head," a half-hour from exec producers Ashton Kutcher, Jason Goldberg and Karey Burke of Katalyst ("Beauty and the Geek"). Hidden camera quizzer has contestants performing outrageous and embarrassing stunts in public, all in an attempt to win big bucks.

Fox 21, Katalyst and Hat Trick Prods. are producing, with Jimmy Mulville and Leon Wilde also serving as exec producers. The Eye ordered a pilot for the project last year (Daily Variety, March 5).

All three skeins fall into the "light entertainment" category of reality. They round out a slate of unscripted skeins that also includes "Survivor," "The Amazing Race," "Big Brother," "Power of 10" and "Super Password."

I swear to God, it's like UHF has come to life before our very eyes.

Coming soon: "What's in YOUR Belly Button?", "I Just Want to Potty All the Time: Toilet Training Secrets of the Stars," "Who Wants to Eat That?", "Are You Smarter Than a Dolphin?" and "Tard War: Autists vs. Mongoloids."

It's not TV. It's a friggin' Greek tragedy.

I remain, as always...

Re:Super-contest of 2008

[UPDATED AND EDITED!]

Holy f@$#in’ ass crackers, dude! This posse is starting to look like one of Shrykey’s Überligen… We now have 23.5 competitors (the .5 being represented by our very own cRAzY, who only deigned to provide the first HALF of his Top 10 List… Man, that writer’s strike is really taking a toll, huh?

So, anywho, it’s been a week since my last attempt at running the figures and crunching the numbers… Let’s see where we are today:

[Our contestants: Marius (delfinasu), geez, Six, Thomassi, jas, me, Jack0, StnMan5, rob, Banks, pulpclub, Shaan, annyonggob, becs, Brent, J.I., Shryke, Prime (transformers2), Chien, Lili, Barky, undeadmonkey, Alyson and, yes, cRAzY*.]

(Btw, I’ve begun “ranking” our picks by assigning “scores,” based on their average placement in our lists – a film which is on everyone’s list at either #1 or #2 might wind up with a score of 1.50, one that appears near the bottom of most lists might wind up at 8.95, etc. …)

The top three titles, which I would argue are our rock-solid top earners ($300M+) look identical to last week’s summary…

[1] Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (average score: 1.87) - The return of Doctah Jone’ appears in the top spot in fully THIRTEEN of the twenty-four lists submitted thus far, which, when you think about it, is pretty incredible. All told, Indy IV ranks among the TOP THREE FILMS in 20 of 24 lists, and appears, in one way or another, on all but ONE. This is some pretty solid consensus, folks; I don’t think 23 out of 24 people think the sun’s going to come up in the East tomorrow. That’s clout, folks.

[2] The Dark Knight (average score: 2.91) – Also figuring on 23 of 24 lists, Knight is just about the closest thing Super-Contest participants consider to be a “sure thing,” with the exception, of course, of the fourth Indiana Jones title. Although entrants only gave Knight four first-place votes, all but one of its 23 mentions place it in the top 5, and sixteen have it in the top three. Again, that’s some powerful stuff, with broad-based consensus: According to Super-Contest participants, The Dark Knight will invariably be among the three highest-grossing titles of 2008.

[3] Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (average score: 3.17) – Here’s the third (and final) 2008 title that appears on 23 of 24 Top 10 lists, fifteen times in the top three spots and twenty-one times in the top five. I don’t think there’s much doubt, as the series winds down to its two-part finale, but that public anticipation and attendance will likely grow huger and huger. With a total eight installments, this will be the top-grossing franchise of all time, a record I frankly doubt I’ll ever see broken in my lifetime. Perhaps ever.

Moving along, it looks to be the same old, same old for our next group of four titles, which appear to be strong contenders for $200-$250M…

[4] WALL-E (average score: 4.38) – all but three Top 10 lists include the latest Disney / Pixar animated classic, and I really have to wonder what those three contributors were thinking, given the company’s nearly flawless track record… Most folks who picked WALL-E think it’ll wind up in the top five (fifteen of twenty-one), and three of us (including your truly) have selected WALL-E as the prospective top earner of 2008.

[5] The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (average score: 5.00) – The sequel to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe looks surprisingly strong, as least to me; like WALL-E, it’s on 21 of 24 Top 10 lists; fourteen of those mentions are in the top five. In spite of the fact that not one person has picked Prince Caspian to finish at #1 for the year, there seems to be a lot of faith out there in this film, and I’m frankly not certain it’s justified. Seems like a lot of hype and wishful thinking to me, but… time will tell…

[6] Iron Man (average score: 6.05) – Eighteen of twenty-four Top 10 lists include the Jon Favreau superhero film, which, as I said last week, really, really astonishes me, given that it’s a fairly (to the non-Black Sabbath-listening / comics-collecting general public, that is) obscure title and a non-sequel, as well. Somehow, I doubt the average filmgoer is QUITE so aware, let alone excited, about Iron Man. However, my own curiosity is definitely piqued, and my feeling is the film might just be able to capture SOME of the magic, some of the freshness, that Transformers did last Summer. Some of. Maybe.

[7] James Bond 22 (average score: 6.18) – Well, like I said last week, this is pretty much a given. We’ve all seen the sort of numbers a modern Bond film is capable of, now – just witness the popularity of the Bourne trilogy, and the success of the recent Daniel Craig franchise reboot, Casino Royale. There’s just no way this film fails to place in 2008’s Top 10. However, only one Super-Contest player has pegged Bond 22 to win it all – I find that prospect a real stretch, myself, honestly – and twelve of seventeen contestants put it in the bottom half of their lists. Bond still has some game, certainly, but he’s not one of the high rollers, any more. Sorry, Commander.

There seems to be general agreement that the next two films belong in the conversation, but that neither will be big enough hits to earn spots among the year’s top five films (none of them earned a single #1 vote)… These films may have $175M+ potential…

[8] Madagascar 2: The Crate Escape (average score: 7.25) – With just a single top-five pick among twelve total selections, the Madagascar sequel’s place in the year-end Top 10 is far from assured. However, there’s a whole lot of goodwill out there towards the original, which probably didn’t perform quite as well as it deserved at the domestic box office. I think Crate Escape will definitely finish in the top twenty, probably top fifteen, but I frankly wonder if it really has the loyal following to outperform potential mega-blockbusters like Cloverfield, Horton Hears a Who!, Speed Racer and Get Smart! Not to mention, December’s potential Holiday Season-smash, Star Trek. I don’t know; I like Madagascar 2’s chances better than Kung Fu Panda, certainly… but more than that, I’m not willing to say at this point.

[9] Hancock (average score: 7.67) – [Sigh] Who the Hell bets against Will Smith? Well, I just might. This is a decent SNL skit, not a feature film, folks. It’s the live-action version of Kung Fu Panda: a one-note, one-joke, one-viewing-only giggler. Its only hope to really break out and earn above $150 million is that it manages to transcend its own sublimely absurd premise and become more than just a gag-fest for high-school boys. Smith’s appeal helps; he’ll have a shot at distinguishing this title from the balls-out mess it would have surely turned into if it had featured any of a dozen different names above the title… names like Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, or even Jason Schwartzman. But it’ll have some competition: Get Smart! is, basically, the same movie. The bit with the whale is hilarious, though. Three out of four participating Fantaversians picked Hancock to finish up somewhere between eighth and tenth place in 2008.

Now, in our next, rather large group, conventional wisdom, such as it is, starts to break down… All of them are probably $150M locks, but beyond that…

[10] Sex and the City: The Movie (average score: 7.14) – Maybe I’m just missing something, here. The show’s been off the air for four years, and it’s about youth and vitality and singledom and explicit, adolescent pillow talk, yeah? Then why did they wait until its four leads were half past menopause to make the damn film? [Sigh] I’m so glad I’m not a chick. For this film to have a chance at earning Top-10 status, it’d almost HAVE to appeal to SOMEONE besides females and aging Gen-Xers, and I just don’t see that happening, folks. I’m sure every woman aged thirty to fifty who’s either stuck in a bad relationship, or can’t get anyone to propose marriage to them, even while holding out the promise of U.S. citizenship as a bonus of sorts, will WANT to see this film, but the problem is, all of ‘em work, and most of ‘em have kids. I’m not saying it can’t earn $100 million. All I’m saying is, any more than that is very, very unlikely. Only seven contestants put Nasty Old People Sex in the City on their Top-10 lists; half of ‘em, in the bottom two.

[11] Cloverfield (average score: 7.25) – Christ, I thought we’d just got done talking about vicious predators loose in New York, engendering chaos, emotional trauma and, of course, bloodcurdling screams, wherever they went. Oh, well. I’ve been big on Cloverfield since, well, forever, but even I don’t think it can reach $200 million, which is what it would take for J.J. Abrams’ modern monster masterpiece (amazing acts of alliteration!) to break into the year’s Top 10 film, in all probability. Matter of fact, that figure ($200M) is probably as much as forty to fifty million dollars too high. But, I’d love to be proven wrong. Cloverfield’s second weekend will tell us everything. If it holds up well against the debuting Rambo, pulling down, say, $35 million in its second Friday-to-Sunday, it might have a chance, because at that point it should have surpassed $100M in its first ten days. But that’s asking a lot from late-winter audiences who'd much rather watch the playoffs, folks. Cloverfield will eat January’s all-time records alive, but I’m skeptical about whether it can last four weeks in the Top Five, which is what it will take to bring home $200 million and a Top-10 ranking at year’s end. Although one Fantaversian penciled Cloverfield in for a top-two finish, five out of eight have it in their bottom three.

[12] The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (average score: 7.33) – Okay, here’s my considered opinion: Meh. Too little, too late. No one gives a damn any more; it’s been seven years since Brendan Fraser’s been in a Mummy film, and nearly a decade since its first installment (1999). We’ve moved on. $80 million is likely. $100 million is possible. $125 million? Forget it. This ain’t National Treasure, you know. Only one of six players scratched Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in at anything higher than seventh place. Even that’s probably being way too generous. Truthfully, this film could fail to wind up in the top twenty.

[13] Kung Fu Panda (average score: 7.78) – Like I was saying about Hancock, this is a one-joke film, just like Surf’s Up, but with better marketing and vocal talents. I expect it to do Meet the Robinsons-type numbers, frankly, meaning I’m putting its over/under at about $95 million. Two out of nine gamers think Kung Fu has Top-5 potential. Frankly, they need to put the opium away before they start seeing talking zoo animals engaging in martial arts, or something equally unlikely, like me with an actual column.

[14] Horton Hears a Who! (average score: 8.25) – I think this film’s being drastically underestimated; other than WALL-E, I suspect this will be the biggest animated film of the year. But, hey, I thought Evan Almighty was bank. Horton will either bomb utterly, or blow the friggin’ doors off the Cineplex. I’m betting the latter. In spades. Fully half of the eight Super-Contest players put Horton dead last, though, and only one in the Top Five. That player was me.

[15] Star Trek (average score: 8.28) – One of these days, I’m really going to have to start paying heed the vox populii: Only seven out of twenty-four Super-Contest entrants think Paramount’s golden goose will, erm, lay something [ahem] in 2008; there’s more faith out there, apparently, in pandas, mummies, cute little battery-operated thingamajiggies and Samantha Jones’s varied sexual partners (sorry: redundant), than there is in the Starship Enterprise and its equally diverse crew. If I were J.J. Abrams, I’d be worried: die-hard movie geeks are largely ignoring his $200 million franchise re-launch, at least until the trailer comes out. Only seven Fantaversians picked this Trek to start something; six of them selected it for their bottom three. What's wrong with all you people, anyway? Beats the Hell out of me; I'm a pundit, after all, not a doctor.

And now we’re down to the also-rans: Films that will probably surpass $100M, but might not go much higher… These films round out our aggregate, estimated Top Twenty...

[16] Get Smart! (average score: 7.00) – I may be in the minority on this, but this is one film I think may just surprise EVERYBODY. Only two contestants picked it for their Top-Ten slates, but $175M, even $200M wouldn’t surprise me terribly. I love the concept behind this film; instead of going for unremitting farce, like so very many recent adaptations of successful television series – Charlie’s Angels, Starsky & Hutch, The Brady Bunch and The Dukes of Hazzard, among others – Peter Segal’s update of the classic Don Adams series will, reportedly, play the premise “straight,” with some satiric elements and an occasional nod to the original’s Mel Brooks pedigree. This title could be the perfect combination of James Bond and, say, Albert Brooks: reality, more or less, only funnier, which could be very, very Smart, indeed.

[17] The Incredible Hulk (average score: 7.50) – again, only a pair of you thought Ed Norton’s re-imagining of this unlikely antihero worthy of mention, which, I suspect, says quite a lot – filmgoers may be far more likely to give the relatively unknown (Iron Man) a chance, than spend their money on a familiar but, evidently, tired icon. Personally, I doubt this film will eclipse $100 million, and I think it could well do far, far worse – like, Hitman-worse. Ang Lee took his shot, and missed, and the public may well forgive our favorite green monster for that, but they haven’t forgotten... yet. The smart thing to do would have been to let this property sit for at least another two or three years, until Hulk had been exorcised entirely from the public consciousness and they could begin, truly, anew.

[18] The Happening (average score: 8.00) – Well, I’ve made my thoughts on M. Night Shyamalan’s latest effort fairly unambiguous, and I’m not about to back down from my unrelenting animosity toward this turkey. Night’s name recognition has always been his greatest asset, but after this bomb, it may well be his downfall. $75 million, tops, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Happening do half that. This is 2008’s The Invasion, folks. Really. It’s that bad.

[19] Speed Racer (average score: 8.50) – One thing I’m certain of: Speed Racer will either be a box-office sensation, or a laughably massive misfire. I’ve seen the Wachowskis at their best (The Matrix Reloaded), and at their worst (The Matrix Revolutions, The Invasion), and somewhere in-between (V for Vendetta), and the one thing that’s consistent about them is, there’s no one better at creating spectacle. But I’m worried that this live-action cartoon will skew too young for the Gen-X crowd, and too old for ‘tweens and younger teenagers, and that it will fall through the cracks somewhere between The Fast and the Furious and, as I’ve said before, Thunderbirds, and thence to oblivion. That all being said, I think $80, $100 million is practically in the bag, but $150 million is probably out of the question. However, I, for one, will go, see Racer, go.

[20] You Don’t Mess With the Zohan (average score: 10.00) – I can’t think of this film, frankly, without giggling. But I doubt it’s got $100 million in the tank. I suspect Adam Sandler’s usefulness as a cartoonish comedic prop is nearing its end; he’d better start aspiring to Tom Hanks-style roles, soon, or he’ll soon be in the same unemployment line as Rob Schneider and Dana Carvey. But I’d love to see him give madcap juvenility one final, spectacular go. $80 million.

Finally, here are the real fliers: Nine films that might have $100M potential, but will probably disappoint the one Super-Contestant who believes in ‘em…

Bedtime Stories: I’ll be honest, at first I thought this could be the next forgettable offering from, God help me, Madonna. The premise is neat, but familiar (Inkheart, anyone?) I don’t know, $65M seems about right to me.

Burn After Reading: It’s the Coens, which means three things – First, it’ll do massive PTA. Second, it’ll have high IMDb. And, finally, it likely won’t exceed $50 million. No Country is their big break; if any of their films is ever going to do $100 million, it’ll be that.

The Day the Earth Stood Still: I’ve made my thoughts on this one clear. It’s Spielberg, and it’s science fiction, so of course $100 million is doable. But it won’t compete with Star Trek. Too preachy. Too Sixties. Too... Keanu. $115M.

The Hottie and the Nottie: Are you friggin’ kidding me?!? Then again, I guess some folks will show up to watch a train wreck, too. (Blonde Ambition did, what, $1,000? Ooooh.) $30M, if that. Truthfully, this title may fail to place in the Top 100 titles of 2008.

Mamma Mia!: I just don’t get this one. $40M, $50M, tops. I don’t care who produced it.

Rambo: Look, I think this one’s got a real shot at $100M. But it looks like I’m in the minority. However, let’s not kid ourselves: it WON’T be among the Top 10, or even the Top 20, of the year.

Tropic Thunder: High concept, low Box Office. $70M, if that.

Wanted: Well, I’ll give it this much: It’ll do better, and be better, than the pitiable Jumper. Which isn’t saying a whole Helluva lot, folks. $85M.

Yes Man: $100M is pretty doable, I think, but not much more. It won’t come anywhere near the Top 10.

Meantime, here are some films that, surprisingly, have NOT been mentioned by ANYONE:

21;
27 Dresses;
88 Minutes;
10,000 B.C.;
The Accidental Husband;
Babylon A.D.;
Bolt;
Case 39;
Charlie Bartlett;
City of Ember;
College;
College Road Trip;
Death Race;
Dragonball;
Drillbit Taylor;
Fame;
Fool’s Gold;
The Forbidden Kingdom;
Fly Me to the Moon-3D;
Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo;
He’s Just Not That Into You;
Hellboy II: The Golden Army;
Hellraiser;
High School Musical 3;
I Know What Boys Like;
Inkheart;
The International;
Journey 3-D;
Jumper;
Kit Kittredge: An American Girl;
Leatherheads;
The Love Guru;
Made of Honor;
Marley and Me;
My Best Friend’s Girl;
Nim’s Island;
Nowhereland;
Passengers;
Penelope;
The Pineapple Express;
Pride & Glory;
Punisher: War Zone;

The Ruins;
Run, Fat Boy, Run;
Semi-Pro;
South of the Border;
Space Chimps;
The Spiderwick Chronicles;
Starship Dave;
Step Brothers;
Swing Vote;
The Tale of Despereaux;
Valkyrie;
Vantage Point;
What Happens in Vegas…;
The X-Files sequel.

Yeah, okay, I get what you’re saying about The Love Guru, but… 10,000 B.C.? Death Race? Drillbit? Fame? Fool’s Gold? Hellraiser? High School Musical 3? Leatherheads? Revolutionary Road? Semi-Pro? The Tale of Despereaux? Valkyrie? X-Files? Tell me you think there aren’t any $100 million prospects here…

Like I said, guys: The. Biggest. Year. EVER. Getcha popcorn ready.

I remain, as always…

Nico.

P.S. If it’s all right with my friend Marius (delfinasu), I’m gonna forego doing a final Super-Contest summary; I’m going to be gone for a few days beginning Thursday evening, so if he wants to give it another go before we “go live” with this thing, great, but I’ll pass. My work here is done. [Grin]

Just an idea for the scoring, how about 5 points for getting a movie right in the top 10, and in the correct order, and 3 points for getting a movie right but out of order?

So if someone's movie choices ended up like this:

1. First
2. Second
3. Fifth
4. Seventh
5. Third
6. Tenth
7. Eleventh
8. Fourth
9. Ninth
10. Fifteenth

They'd get 5 points for 1, 2, and 9, and 3 points for 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8.  No points for 7 and 10.

For a total of 30 points.

Just an idea, tweak it, use it, laugh at it, whatever you want :)

AzureWolf, your idea may be useful in case of a tie... everybody, what do you think?

What about Lili's idea: the DVD for the winner? I haven't received many approvals... I'm in with a DVD for the best mogul.

Marius (delfinasu): Thanks, partner. I did, indeed, make an error in numbering... I have now corrected that, and the Top Twenty films we all picked are now ranked above...

I think AzureWolf's probably on to something, there, but I'm going to pull back from any sort of organizational role in the Super-Contest, now, and remain, for the remainder of the year, as "just" a player... It's delfinasu's show... My work here is done... [Grin]

I still like Lili's idea, and I have a bargain-basement DVD all picked out and sitting on my desk. Do not open 'til Christmas.

I'll check back later tonight, but after about noon tomorrow (Thursday) I'll be out of pocket for awhile... See, I have a screening to go to -- IN NEW YORK -- Thursday evening... Hint, hint... Be back Monday!

...Btw, and on a related note, there's a WILD, CRAZY-ASS RUMOR flying around that the first trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will ALSO be in front of a certain very wide (and tall... Cue the Shelley Winters: "...But he's LARRRRRGE!") release coming out nationally on Friday (along with Star Trek)... I have NO IDEA if it's true or not, but damn if that wouldn't be cool... If this in fact DOES turn out to be the case, I'll try and give Shrykey a heads-up late Thursday... Oh, darn, now I've let the cat out of the bag... [Wink]

numbersix_99 : the closing date is today 1/17/08 - see par. 5 on my first post, especially to be before Cloverfield premiere, the first potential blockbuster.

If we have 3 more players that don't have any problem with the changes of geezer9687, Thomassi87 and JackO, I'll consider their updated top 10, else their first choices remain... I just want to be fair-play with all the players. See also my precedent post with my reason. (2 statistics already made by Nico) Until a decision will be made, we don't accept any other updates at your choices.

Everybody else - Hurry up! Today is your last chance to celebrity! :-)
Let's see which mogul has the best choices...

I only made two changes, i moved Harry Potter up a spot, which means nothing because it didnt change the list, and I added High School Musical 3 because when I made the original list, it didnt have a release date. Thats the only reason I wanted to change it because up until then it was unavailable. I also thought it was going to be ok for anyone to change up until the final day. But if its not then thats ok too. Its your show!

Delfinasu, your game starts tomorrow so why can't we change our lists until then. I can't help it that Nico posted those statistics, they benefit new players too you know. I don't see the problem with letting everybody change their lists until you officially start this game. At first it wasn't clear that you had to put your list in order, from biggest BO hit to smallest. But it's really up to you.

That's kind of ludicrous to allow new lists, but we can't change 'em if we've put them in already. First of all, what's to stop someone from editing their post? Second, can you imagine if FM did it that way? Oh, new players can do whatever they want, but once you make a choice it's locked in FOREVER. Kind of defeats the purpose of a "lock date"... Just for fun, to counteract Lili's broad denunciation of fairness, if they won't be allowed to update their slates i'm out... for real...

OK, guys, the subscription is officially CLOSED! Posting NEW top 10s won't be considered from now on.
ohnaut and NSpannaus: nice jokes, pitty you haven't post a whole top 10 :D
cRAzY: welcome back!  :)
Alyson and Thomassi87 - we don't have 2 players with exactly the same top 10, so it won't be necessary the order in which you posted them, because it won't be a tie after all in the end...
geezer9687, Thomassi87, JackO, J.I. and AzureWolf - I've saved your initial choices so, I know that is "my show" but I don't want to upset anyone and I want to be fair-play with everybody,
