Most promising young star?

An article in the new entertainment weekly about Lohan got me wondering which young actor has the greatest potential to become a huge star. Like Julia Roberts or Will Smith. All of these actors have already "made it", but none are household names...yet. I think Shia and Keira are the frontrunners.

Shia Lebouf is quickly becoming a big name star, and I think the critics have voiced as much also with Disturbia and Transformers this year.

Dane Cook is hardly a "young" star, he is at least 10 years older than the others listed.

I think Anton Yelchin should be on the list also..

The only girl I can think of is Amanda Seyfried, however I don't see her getting beyond the "hot chick" typecast on the big sceen.. however she does an excellent job on the small screen on Big Love.

Edit: also, Anne Hathaway, if she isn't already there, she will be soon.

I have to go with Scarlett Johansson, by a narrow margin over Shia LaBeouf and Keira Knightley.

All of those actors have picked very good roles so far, and their star will only increase.

James McAvoy has made a name for himself with his roles in Narnia and Last King of Scotland, so look for him a lot in the future.

Jonah Hill has potential, as long as he isn't always typecast as the chubby guy with the Jewfro.

Lindsay Lohan? Why is she even in this group?

i read line 1, and a light went on in my head...."The award for mogul with most mainstream opinions goes to....SHRYKE!! oh wait that was another poll!!!!"....hehe ;)

but my opinions are exactly the same - scarlett ahead of keira and shia....

only person i disagree with you on is lindsay, shryke....girl's got talent, we just rarely ever see any of it through the drunken haze of DUI's, rehab stints and a couple of delinquent parents.... :D but believe me, where 'actresses' like paris talk about a movie's thematic content in terms of "that's hot!!", lindsay actually makes some insightful comments....

With 'Fracture' out on dvd now, here's hoping people continue to discover and appreciate his work (though in fairness Anthony Hopkins steals the show!). Reminds me of a young (but un-hell-raising) Sean Penn: bold in his choices and fearless in choosing roles that interest him, not just going the Cuba Gooding Jnr way and appearing in anything offered to him. You can be generally hopeful that Ryan Gosling won't let you down with a bad movie.

Gosling. he's good I'll give him that. Buts hes no shia. I Robot. Disturbia. Transformers. All huge movies that made a lot of frickin dough and he did excellent acting in all. And we all remember how frickin awesome transformers was. Just don't play the game. Anyways. Dane Cook is old yes. But I think what he meant by the pole was that Cook is just now coming into his popularity. In the stand up world he is huge. I have no doubt it won't take him long to come into the movie biz. London and Employee were good movies. And he's had several other small roles that I can't think of right now. Anybody seen the one with him and Dennis Rodman. Now thats funny. anyways. Will Ferrel is already forty and he only hit his popularity streak a few years ago.

Ryan Gosling for most of already stated posts really shows his acting chops with every performance.I have yet to see his Oscar nominated "Half Nelson" but heard nothing but great buzz."The Notebook" goes down as one of the best love stories in years.I know chick flick but so well done( My wife will be pleased with this post-LOL).Even Rachel Wood grabed me by the testies with "13" ,and so far hasn't let go so the speak.Great presence for such a young actress.Amanda Bynes is a fantastic comedienne in search of the breakthrough script with the right part for her.Shia is the current golden boy star on the raise.
In about 5 years when someone does this list Dakota Fanning will be at or near the top of that list.If she plays it right she might be the next Drew Barrymore type.If she can take it to next level.AKA adult roles cause she already kicks butt as about the best child actress going.Late

I still think Keira Knightley is the best one here. Her films have a higher box office average then anyone else. She has been in one of the biggest franchises in movie history, earned an oscar nomination, and carried hit movies almost entirely on her name alone. In fact every movie she has done has been a hit except for Domino and the Jacket.

Shia LaBeouf? Most people haven't even seen him in his best acting performance - "A Guide to Recognizing Angels" opposite Channing Tatum ("Step Up"). Guys, you were actually paying attention in "Transformers"? I don't know how anyone can really consider LaBeouf except for his selection of talent agents getting him parts in "Transformers" & "Disturbia". He'll be in next summer's "Indiana Jones 4", so he'll be even larger next year than now, but does that mean most promising?

I've always known that you can judge tomorrow by today. Well, how many of these actors have any Oscar nominations? Ryan Gosling has one. Anyone else? Nope.

Gosling has shown more poise and intelligence in his roles than anyone. From bit roles in "Remember the Titans" to starring roles in "The Notebook", "The Believer", "Half Nelson" and "Fracture". The man knows more than anyone else what he's doing.

Also on the list should be Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He's becoming an indie god and now he's working his way in important films from Scott Frank ("The Lookout") and John Madden ("Killshot").

i agree with you about laboeuf friskytiger....however, that being said, you don't need an oscar nomination to be promising....take evan rachel wood for example - 5 movies in sundance in the past 8 years?? that's an amazing record to have....and the point of being promising is kind of that you will one day (not at present) have several nominations and possibly oscars under your belt....

also, you missed the fact that keira knightley also has a nomination to her name....and i should point out that a few names up here are comedians, who never get any oscar nods....

i definitely agree about gosling though, if there's a star on the rise in hollywood, it'll have to be this man....brilliant choice of roles, and beautiful work with the roles he does choose....

lastly, i maintain (seemingly stubbornly) that lindsay lohan is a talented actress and needs to broaden her spectrum of roles and narrow the spectrum of drugs flooding her blood, and possibly one day she'll be another drew barrymore, maybe better....

You really think shia gives two shakes of some lambs crap about some golden oscar dealie when he could be swimming in all the money he made with transformers, disturbia, and lets not forget holes. Some people act for trophies. Others. Would rather have a but load of money and fame. Not too mention he got to play in transformers. That should be a reward in it of itself. Cause that movie was awesome.
Gosling is okay but I haven't seen much diversity from him. McAdams is more of a mention. She had one hell of a year last year. I think she picked a good script for each genre and hit the jackpot on all of them. Maybe she and Shia should get together and do a movie.

I probably missed the point of the poll but I feel when it is all said and done Joseph Gordon-Levitt's career will be the most memorable. I am talking about the unofficial actor's hall-of-fame. I am just not certain that some of the other actors on this list have the tools to tranisition into the rest of their career. I mean I know Ms. Johansson, Ms. Knightley, Mr. Gosling and Mr. Gordon Levitt have the chops but I am not sure who else does. The only reason I pick Joe over the rest is the word promising, referring to potential. Everyone else I have mentioned is in the first part of their careers, creating name recognition and career stability (something Ms. Lohan could take a page from), the next step is the Ali step that Will Smith took a few years ago. The step that distinguishes actors from movie stars. The step that lifts you in the eyes of your peers and not just your audience....

I digress. I guess what I am saying is Shia is a movie star not sure he has what it takes to become an acting star and Hall-of-Famer like Willie and Julia. When I look at Joe I see Seymour-Hoffman and Giammatti except better looking, which puts his ceiling much higher than these tremendous gentleman, but potential is nothing just ask Ms. Lohan. I do think Joe could be one of the greats. He just needs one breakout and there will be no looking back.

Honestly, I'm mildly disappointed at the bad wrap Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets for having been on 3rd Rock. If anything it shows his range (I personally liked the show, and it was on for quite a long time, so others must have agreed at some point). Additionally working with John Lithgow and Jane Curtin for the amount of time that he got, can be nothing short of amazing.

I can't believe he is being mentioned as a "promising young star" his career up to now has been nothing but consistent!
- He had memorable roles as a child actor culminating in major roles in Angels in the Outfield (Kiddie flick) and The Juror (Drama)
- As a "teen" he branched out WHILE continuing to film 3rd rock - he stepped out with 10 Things I Hate About you, then filled some MASSIVE shoes opposite Don Cheadle and Zooey Deschanel in his first dramatic lead in Manic (to me this was his real emotional breakout starring role, not sure why Brick and The Lookout are getting the attention for it)
- His recent hits Mysterious Skin, Brick, and The Lookout have just been a continuation of an already solid career.

*Aghast* I honestly have a hard time believing you could say a thing like that about John Cusak, but then to me he's right up there with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale as an actor.
becs, I'm not questioning his talents- High Fidelity is one of my favorite films and he is one of those actors that I would watch in a movie sight unseen. And I'm not questioning his abilty that he showed in 1408- I didn't have the opportunity in my schedule to see in the theatre so I will have to see it on DVD first. I'm simply making the point that I don't think his career ever made it over to the 'great' list. But to be fair, most actors, and most of the actors I really like, don't really deserve the right to be on the short list of greats.

I guess If being a great was an 'A', I would rank Cusack's career at a B-B+. I would have ranked Johnny Depp a B+ before Pirates. I would Put his career at A- now post Pirates.

The Brittish version of John Cusack, Colin Firth, is another actor I really enjoy. And on the US side, I would rank his film staus about B.

I hope that better explains what I meant to say about Cusack.

Most promising young star?

Shrugs. I look at LaBeouf and I definitely see a young man that could easily pass as a relative of Kyle Chandler (of Early Edition, to go into the past, and King Kong, to step into the present). There is definitely a strong appearance resemblance. I voted for LaBeouf for the same reason I've been rooting for him for years: I saw him in Holes, years ago, and his performance for a child of his age blew me away. And of course Constantine (say bad things about the movie itself if you like, but his acting was spot-on -- in fact, he hasn't always picked A movies, but he has done pretty well at predicting, or even making, A roles; that's a gift). Even though I don't target him as someone whose movies I want to watch, I keep seeming to watch em. That says a lot.

The danger for him, and for all of these actors, is ducking away from stereotypes. I have always been a huge fan of Cusack but I've also noticed that he's been typecast for so long that he seems to keep playing similar characters, at least on an emotional level. I think he might just be BORED of it by now. I noticed that before Serendipity came out, but Serendipity did kind of clinch it for me. I still love him in "Better Off Dead" though :). I think he needs to break out. He's definitely pulling an "About A Boy" (or trying to) with Alien Child, but I think that movie and movies like it will probably wind up being his comfort zone for a few years. Awkward age. Oddly, I think he might do better for his career, long-haul-wise, if he stepped away from the screen for a few years then came back with something really challenging to his typical role. I think he'd do wonderfully in something a whole lot grittier.

I like Gordon-Leavitt, but I don't see him as becoming a big-time leading man. I'd like to see him flex his muscles a bit more, if he's given a chance. My guess is he'll probably wind up with one of those character-actor resumes with minor repeated comebacks and perhaps eventually a major one when he's hit his mid-30s or so. Just a thought.

As for Lohan... I don't know if she has potential, but if she does, I don't think her adolescent behavior should be used as the ruler to judge by. Drew Barrymore went through a rough time but after getting over it, she wound up making a comeback and then surpassing anything she'd done previously. Life experience might show an actress to be bitchy, but generally speaking it is life that winds up being the great teacher for acting. Some of the best actors I know of have had less than uncheckered pasts. Robert Downey, Jr, for instance, came back with a vengeance after his problems.

In the end it'll be about presence, charisma, versatility, good judgment, and above all, I hope, great acting chops.

So, for guys: LaBeouf. Oh, and for girls? Knightly. Even if you don't consider her acting (which isn't bad, but could probably improve, and almost certainly WILL improve): She's got a lot of spunk, and a whole heaping ton of presence.

I just hope Mandy Moore doesn't wind up surpassing everybody on that list.

Having recently watched both Disturbia and Fracture on DVD, I have to say that both Shia and Ryan have great potential. I would not dis either one's acting skills.

But, I voted for Shia - simply because in Disturbia it would have been so easy for him to be out-done by his supporting cast, but even in his scenes with David Morse and Carrie Anne-Moss, he holds his own and gives as good as he gets. That is a real good trick to pull off, and he did it professionally.

Lindey Lohan, sorry to say, is a has-been already. It may take 5-10 years for her to be taken seriously as an actress again. In only 2 years, she's done as much damage to her career - without help - as Sean Penn did to his career in 15 years! It's good that she's made so much money already, because she may actually have to go to school to learn another trade.

I disagree that "none are household names." Ryan Gosling, Scarlett Johansson, and Keira Knightley are all well-established... they've all garnered Oscar attention and starred in box office successes. I think the true up-and-comers on this list are Amanda Bynes and Joseph Gordon Levitt. Jonah Hill is going to get pigeon-holed in comedies, and I'm not even sure why Lindsey Lohan is on this list, since her career is sadly in the toilet and not coming out any time soon.

As far as the future goes, I see him getting way better offers than most on the list. Knightley is close but, Im not digging the 2 latest movies she's working on. I mean, two women fighting over the love of a poet & playing Princess Diana's ancestor? 2 films I will choose not to go see. Trying a little too hard to not be typecast as Elizabeth Swan. La Beouf is in Indiana Jones 4 & Eagle Eye. Eagle Eye looks pretty cool. He's still the slacker that saves the world but, its gonna be a more maturing role for him, playing opposite of a single mom (Rosario Dawson). IJ4 will have him in a very big publicity circus, even I had a Raiders of the Lost Ark lunch box. He'll get the good offers but, its up to him to pick the right ones.

There a very few, if any, actors who have the abilty to fit in as many genres as he does, he can lead a film without overpowering it, he is a near box office success every time he comes out with a movie, and I think he knows his talents and the audience as good or even better than any actor out in the market right now.

He is or will become a legend in modern film not because he was the most talented or the coolest in the class, but because he is very smart with his choices, earned his respect through consistant hard work (Bussom (sp?) Budddies (yes, I remember watching that show while it was not reruns), Joe vs. the Volcano, etc.), and people want to like him.

Love actually is one of those romantic comedies that guys can usually enjoy almost as much as girls, its funny, smart, and very very complex, and british, the guy who goes to the US to win over chicks with his British accent is HILARIOUS (Cameo from Elisha Cuthbert looking hot as usual).

And you are correct in that King Arthur was a steaming pile of dung... however I thought Keira was one of the few bright spots in the movie.

I also have not yet seen Domino, though it is on my netflix list coming up soon... AND I agree with you that she hasn't really tapped her depth in any of her performances.. but I see the potential there. I want to see her do something really gritty, and soon, which will be a make it or break it role for her.

There was this kid who played Jason Bateman's awkward social-clumsy son. I guess he's still doing the same sort of roles today, but this is where he perfected his craft. He's since hit it big in the hit Superbad and the soon to be hit Juno. If by now you haven't figured out by now, I'm talking about Michael Cera. Here's a star in the making if I ever saw one...

Oh btw I think Keira Knightley is not only gorgeous, but also talented and has a big future in front of her.

Shia Lebeouf will hit it big too, come on, before he's 25 he can get a lead in a $300mil+ movie. That shows something...

I woulda said Evan Rachel Wood as well in the past, especially since her performance in Thirteen. But her relationship with Marilyn Manson just makes me cringe. I guess that shouldn't have anything to do with her career, unless she wants to become the next Helena Bonham Carter, which isn't necessarily a bad thing...

LOL! Gee, should we consider voting for the doll, too?

Speaking of which, I bet the '08 MTV Movie Awards will have some interesting entries in the Best Onscreen Romance, or Best Duet, or Best Kiss, or whatever, categories...

For a lot of these young up and coming actors, luck and 'one big hit' is what all of them are waiting for. Ms. Knightly, Mr. Bloom, and other actors who just happen to be on the right movie set at the right time and get 'overrated' have one thing going for them that most any other actor in Hollywood would kill for- that are at least ratable. To be overrated means that a fairamount of people know who you are, and means your career has a small chance in hell of making it.

What exactly is a "tiny landslide"? Like an anthill-slide or something? Anyway, I really see a bright future for Ryan Gosling. He's got ridiculous acting chops, makes fascinating career decisions (last three co-stars: an up-and-coming child actress in Half Nelson, Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins, and... a blow-up doll), and has a sizable female fanbase who get all misty-eyed over his Notebook romance. I accidentally voted for Shia, but only because I was caught up in Transformers-hype and didn't see Gosling's name buried near the bottom.

Forest Gump was above average. I liked it. Big. Haven't seen since I was like eight or something. I might have heard of bachelor party. probably not though. And the shoe movie I've definatley never heard of it. and if I haven't heard of it then I definatley haven't seen it. and If I haven't seen it then I don't know if I'll like it. But Tom hanks doesn't really play overly diverse characters. Kind of like Mel Gibson. Over rated actor number two. They have their movies that are okay. Forest Gump, Lethal Weapon. Other than that. Eh. I have better things to do.
