Iron Man 2

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117989003.html?categoryId=13&cs=1

Marvel has just announced deals are in place for (the brilliant) Justin Thoreaux to write the Iron Man Sequel!
Ultimately, it scares me because the guys that worked on the screenplay for Iron Man did such a spectacular job it will be hard to live up to is someone new is brought it. On the flip-side Justin is incredibly smart and witty, I think his sense of humor will fit the style very well, so I look forward to seeing what he can do with it - as long as he doesn't change the characters too much. I do think his style will be very well suited to delve more into the personal demons of Tony Stark, which would be a great direction to take the film in my opinion.

Deals with John Favareau and RDJ are still in the works.

I figured John August (who did a re-write on the original) would write the sequel.

And the secret to the first film's script (besides John August) was ad-libbing. Jon Favreau directed the film in a Robert Altman-style which means that the actors had reign over the screenplay in terms in lines. So many of Downey Jr.'s lines were likely not in the script for example.

As Buscemi so aptly pointed out, it is true the major quality of the film came from the ad-libs, however the writer makes the framework for those to occur. Plus if you have ever watched any awards show where they read off segments of the screenplay, you'll know the writer also has alot to do with setting the scene... so I think Justin will be a good person to have doing that for iron man.

Iron Man 2

Sorry, but I'm a little lost on this. Why is everyone so pleased that Justin Theroux has been asked to write the screenplay. Now of course I love a lot of his acting work, from his role in American Psycho to Six Feet Under. But I had never really known of him as a screen writer until recently and he seems to only have Tropic Thunder on his resume, to which we have no knowledge if it will be any good. Just wondering why everyone is so excited about this choice over a someone like John August?

Re:Iron Man 2

I guess you just have to know the guy from his lesser-known roles, he hasn't got much to his name as far as writing, but you can get a feel of his style from the independent projects he's been heavily involved in and influential to.
What I'm betting on is the fact that Theroux wrote, acted and exec produced Tropic Thunder with RDJ also starring... its probably a ploy by Marvel/studio to get RDJ on board. Meaning that not only does Marvel think Tropic Thunder showed some skill, but it also means they believe RDJ is sold on his ability.

Iron Man 2

What independent projects has he worked on, I'd like to see what he has come up with previously. I do love his minor acting roles, he always stands out even though it may be a very minor role, and he does usually have some kind of individuality to him. Just wondering if this usually equates to a decent screenwriter.

Marvel must have seen what he has done with Tropic Thunder though, so I'm guessing if they like it enough to hire him, it must be pretty good.

Re:Iron Man 2

He apparently had alot of creative involvement into Broken English, The Ten, and even The Baxter, all of which he had non-starring roles in (his turn as Jesus in The Ten is pretty much the highlight of the film, but I don't know if that classifies as being the star).. though he is uncredited, so take it as you will. It is also common knowledge that he has been a longtime friend and collaborator of Ben Stiller's (since his bit in Zoolander) which is what led to his involvement in writing Tropic Thunder.
Really, If you want to see him in action as StnMan noted, the only film he can truly call his own is Dedication which he directed and produced, though he didn't write it, was involved in re-writes. You can also read a few interviews he's done and you will get a sense of who he is pretty fast - and personally though he inst' know for his screenwriting, I see it as a fairly positive development for IM2 just being familiar with his personality and style.

Iron Man 2

Thanks for the info, becs, I suppose he will be fine as screenwriter, I was just a little unsure as to why they would pick someone so inexperienced to be in charge of such an important script. I mean, this is worth millions, and I would not have expected Marvel to put all their faith in a guy with so little experience. I will have to check out his film though, have never heard of it before.

I still need to see The Ten as well, if only to get another glimpse of Winona Ryder.....
