SUPER LEAGUE STANDINGS - 7/6

Wow, the FM people were on the ball today, having the updates all done by the time I got home from work! Kewl!

First, a heads-up... to all contestants who survive the next cut in the FY tournaments (which, BTW, will reduce the field to just over half of what it was when we started), you can expect an e-mail from me that will contain not only the passwords for Round Eight, but also a query about possible end-of-the-year prizes.

We are now a week away from the entry deadline for the July leagues, and the following players still have not signed up:

Haasing1986 - has not signed up for the two 2nd-Half tournaments, but HAS signed up for the Ultimate FY. Don't know why.

jennyg - Ultimate HY.

platinumbear - my perennial procrastinator. It's Round SEVEN, dude!

stajan9 - just got back from Africa. Entered the 2nd-Half BO, but still not the Ultimate.

TeeBeeBee - is in Round Two of the 2nd-Half Ultimate, but not yet the Box Office.

And now, on with the updates.

ULTIMATE FULL-YEAR

binkley and ashkul are taking delight at hogging the GZ all to themselves for the last few weeks. They still own the 1-2 spots despite having one film left to go (that being Space Chimps). Can the two of them hold off the six-headed Jas-geezer-Legend-sean-surfer-arrow demon, who all seem determined to hold hands and bum-rush the rest of the field? Time will tell. (God help me, if the six of them tie for 3rd and ALL earn IM's, I will plotz.)

Nearly impossible at this point to determine who's in danger, as nearly everyone in the bottom 1/2 has either Hellboy or Dark Knight.

Round Five: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/1sZ8fk23hauaKR14WNCTyw%3D%3D31848
Round Six: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/0ThOQN8OrWoPFffh3lGLRQ%3D%3D29837
Round Seven: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/p1swx5FfMs7J%24U1sretTKQ%3D%3D28029

ULTIMATE HALF-YEAR (1st Half)

I'm buffaloed. Who is in the best position to take the crown from ashkul? Only four people have Hellboy, and only one has Dark Knight, and they are all in the bottom half. Will it be enough?

For the first time, ash has been tied for the lead, this week by Chienfantome. The thing is, ash still has those darned monkeys left in his bullpen.

Round Five: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/BRXD7WHyIPObF0FLP7wljA%3D%3D23079

BOX OFFICE FULL-YEAR

Kompressr hits an unprecedented $1.05 billion this week, and he STILL isn't done! How much higher can he go with Hellboy still in his lineup? Ye gods.

18 of the bottom 25 people have Hellboy, and six of the seven who don't have Dark Knight one week later. Which leaves lainiediamond in some serious hot water...

Round Five: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/t9bZIc2xVbQviBO3yUy9Hw%3D%3D23662
Round Six: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/tYgwpEfBFjNHx%2BQK7XMzIg%3D%3D24110
Round Seven: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/veFDtGxPkZ%2BhW4aYWQ%24X0g%3D%3D23870

BOX OFFICE HALF-YEAR (1st Half)

Chienfantome hangs on to that top spot for probably the last time, as Kompressr is poised to take the big red guy to the top this weekend.

I've been over this and over this, and I honestly believe it will come down to a battle Kompressr and geezer. Boiled down: Kompressr has Wanted's remaining cash and $160 million lead over geezer, who has Dark Knight's first ten days. Holy heart failure, Batman! This is going to be close!

By the way, at Keyser Soze's request, I created a chart on the last page which has the running five-round totals for all nineteen finalists. As you can see, it's been one HELL of a tournament for anny, who, should he not emerge victorious here, deserves kudos up the yin-yang. Dude, wow. You are our Tiger, our Federer, our Jerry Rice. Keep it up.

Round Five: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/1FP4VFwtGORTIQpbsaaFRw%3D%3D23548

ULTIMATE HALF-YEAR (2nd Half)

Round One: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/rMOu1FzX%243Olr1y3fud9gw%3D%3D35075
Round Two: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/ts1PM0cJlcqOfYtSOSoHCQ%3D%3D29993

BOX OFFICE HALF-YEAR (2nd Half)

Round One: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/fKND7Mnd7k558igpwV9wcg%3D%3D28421
Round Two: http://attachments.wetpaintserv.us/kES3Guf04STfRHMK4vMVuw%3D%3D27381

SUPER LEAGUE STANDINGS - 7/6

I noticed the updates were remarkably quick too this week. Maybe it is the start of a quick and responsive team.

Anyway, its taken more than six months, but I have finally been introduced in the SL round up!! Don't know whether any of us will be there come the end of the season though, guess we'll just have to wait and see. Even so, two of the 'six headed demon as you call it already have IM's, but I would be delighted if I could finally get one, I'm sure I'll need it soon enough as the competition gets that bit harder. I'd watch out for Supershaan though, he looks good with TDK still to come...

You're welcome.

Why? Because there are 100 players! A lot of them have picked the same films:

Zohan - 53 players
Hulk - 63 players
Get Smart - 35 players
Wall-E - 53 players
Wanted - 30 players
Hancock - 27 players

Oh, a smattering have taken some others, but there are bound to be a few ties, even now. I'm sure it will spread out even more over the next few weeks, especially that August is such a mixed bag.

Umm yeah, thing is Shryke, you seem to have mixed up Kompressr's Rd5 total with mine in that cumulative column. If you didn't I would be #2 through the period, with BrentBaines actually leading atm.

Thing is, I'm not going to win any of these leagues, so it'll all come to nothing. Guess there's no prizes for having the largest cume total, right?

Oh and Tiger's practically crippled at the moment, Federer just lost to Nadal on his hallowed turf of Wimbledon and I barely know who Jerry Rice is (some NFL player, right) so shows that being rated highly usually means squat. That is, unless you win the whole thing...

Haha, perfect! There's some mediocre names there! Mr. Beckham is now like the epitome of mediocrity - football skill wise at least. That's why he went over there to play "soccer" over with you Yanks who barely even know what the game is.

Venus is pretty much a part-time tennis player along with her sister, so basically either of them will never get to #1 again, because they just don't play enough.

Had to google Seon-Hwa Lee, hmm seems kinda mediocre, couldn't have you given me Michelle Wie instead?

I'm content with that. Although Federer is pretty awesome, I'll take him, to be honest...

Well J.I. I'm assuming you are American (well I'm pretty sure you are, since I'm facing you in the Fantalympics), you gotta know almost everyone who isn't American calls you guys "Yanks" - it's not a derogatory term at all, I'm sure. It does insinuate some sort of arrogance on your part, but nothing you Yanks (there it is again) can't handle, I'm sure :D. I'm pretty sure I said Yanks not Yankees. I know that refers to the baseball team.

Oh and J.I., the rest of the world is proud of the fact that that we don't care about your version of "football" - if you can even call it "football". Seriously no one in the world cares about American Football other than you guys, and we never will. To be honest, Australians generally couldn't care less about football/soccer either (rugby/Australian Rules are the majority sports here), but at least we respect the football/soccer as a significant sport in the world, and it is definitely expanding down here as well. However, we (along with the rest of the world) couldn't give two tosses about American football. I mean, why the heck is it called a "touchdown" if you don't even touch the ball down? Anyway, I digress...

Now tennis is my choice of sport. Serena and Venus are brilliant tennis players, and yes they did just face each other in the Wimbledon final. But the fact of the matter is they don't play anywhere near a full load of tournaments to be ranked right at the top of women's tennis. So hence, part-time tennis players. They really have other commitments like fashion design and whatnot, so they only play the big tournaments which doesn't allow them to gain enough ranking points to get to #1.

Whoops, off on a tangent again...

I'm hoping TDK is an amazing movie - got my personal expectations way raised on that one - but I think you're dreaming. The fastest-grossing movie in history (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest) hit 214 million in 8 days, and that was just ridiculous (the speed of moneymaking, not the movie itself, which I liked). Transformers took 12 days plus a Monday sneak preview to hit 200 million last year. And both of those were being sold to family audiences more than this Batman is.

I have no doubt the movie will be huge over a long and successful run, but 10 days is 10 days. I'd guess somewhere between 175 and 185, which is low enough to keep a few players still in the HY game depending on how well Wall-E, Hancock and Hellboy hold up. Alyson, BrentBaines, the back-loaded slates of JackO and Keyser Soze... I'm not yet buying that this is a two-man race.

Granted, it's my opinion, but you're counting on a near-record opening at 125 million. 3rd biggest opening of all time? Possible, sure, but not something the experts can accurately project, no matter who's saying 125 million.

Admittedly, the hype is monumentally larger this time around, and The Joker is a much more marketable villain than The Scarecrow or Ras-al-Ghul, but you know where Batman Begins was after two weekends? 122 million.

It seems I did goof on the up-to-the-weekend standings in the cumulative Ultimate HY tournament. anny is NOT in 1st place overall, as I previously averred. Here are the actual standings:

1. $3,172,586,292 - Kompressr
2. $3,091,272,795 - Chienfantome
3. $3,086,551,070 - mutard7
4. $3,063,602,191 - BrentBaines
5. $3,063,209,047 - annyonggob888
6. $3,041,110,733 - geezer9687
7. $2,966,132,441 - Alyson
8. $2,880,287,870 - J.I.
9. $2,870,488,510 - Teh_Sham
10. $2,861,551,296 - codeslinger
11. $2,861,154,622 - SuperShaan
12. $2,834,997,641 - pulpclub
13. $2,830,747,175 - Keyser Soze
14. $2,778,100,868 - undeadmonkey
15. $2,758,589,770 - jas_8382
16. $2,705,748,990 - JackO
17. $2,610,657,779 - lainiediamond
18. $2,560,676,535 - i_valero
19. $2,559,425,208 - becs

So it would seem that if Kompressr holds on for victory in Round Five, he will be the champion in both word AND deed.

Good call. I stand corrected on the running time argument. But I still think the darkness is a factor. Regardless of actual movie content, POTC2 and Spider-Man 3 were marketed kid/family-friendly. I'm pretty sure that even seeing a Joker one-sheet would give my 6-year-old nightmares.

I'd still totally take the movie in Ultimates - it looks fantastic, which bodes well for user ratings and a long run in the Top 5 - but I think hype is overtaking reason on the box office prospects.

I really don't think you can compare the two. Batman Begins relied on word of mouth to get to its big numbers. Most people wrote of the Batman Franchise. I'm surprised it made that much in its first 10 days. I know I didn't see it within 10 days. I really had to be convinced not to wait til the DVD. Word of mouth did that for me. I saw it, and it was awesome.

The Dark Knight does not have to worry about this. It has the reputation that Batman Begins built in theaters and on DVD. It has a much better and more recognizeable villain in the Joker. People have been anticipating this from the closing scene of "Begins." The advertising is everywhere! This would all be good for about 100 million opening, equaling Iron Man. Add the tragedy of the loss of Heath Ledger, that this is his last film, and you will get people rushing out to see it that may not have. It will be MASSIVE right out of the gate. It will be the biggest movie of the year. Combine this with the great reviews and the sure to be positive word of mouth, and its second weekend shouldn't see a very big drop.

All of this said, for your boy to beat out Kompressr, he also needs this to be huge. He needs it to be huge, and he needs Hancock and WALL-E to make like 250 million more to beat the two of us. I can't see this happening. Not at all.

Let me start by agreeing with geez that you really can't compare BB and TDK because even though BB made a significant dent in the BO, it's real success was achieved on DVD. Out of the 12 friends of mine in the room with me at the moment, only 3 saw it in theaters, 8 on DVD and 1 hasn't heard about it, but they're all getting tix with me to watch TDK on OW!! This was actually the main point of my post. I was going to start a new thread but didn't think it was totally warranted, so I roamed about the forums looking for an appropriate segway....and voila!!

I just wanted to point out the same thing, that the advertising is everywhere and the TV Spots are finally here en masse!!

I watched about 3 hours of TV last night and on 4 different channels, I ran across anywhere from 15-20 spots for TDK. And I don't live in the US, but in Canada!! The marketing machine is really outrageously massive for this movie, and I'm feeling as though I'm getting swept up in the tidal wave of people who are coming around to the idea that there's no way in hell that this movie can open to less than $100-120 mil. and if I were to pick a number, I'd go for $120-130 mil and possibly higher as the release date approaches.

Wow, I actually have the highest cumulative gross? Awesome. :D

On the topic at hand, I won't make a prediction but I do believe the dark content will play a major factor.

I'm also surprised that no one has mentioned the effect MM will have on TDK's OW. Alot of us are forgetting that the film is not the sole opener, but actually only one of three, something POTC2, Spiderman3 and Shrek3 did not have to face. MM is tracking well and is going to steal females, where as Space Chimps will try its best for kids.

Factoring in everything, I do see it matching the lofty expectations that most analysts have for it. I can't wait to see it, but it would be unfortunate for it to considered "disappointing" like some people have ruled "Hancock" and "Wall-E" performances.

Preliminary Updates:

ULTIMATE FY

Boy, wholesale changes at the top. bink dropped from 1-4, ash from 2-7 and Thomassi from 3-9. JackO, tcwilson and spyspeeder are now tied for 1st.

Oh, and the six-headed jas/geezer/legend/sean/surfer/arrow hydra? Is now tied for 130th.

platinumbear moved out of the RZ, but he STILL hasn't even entered Round 7. If he hasn't by tomorrow, he is DQ'd. Pretty much everyone else in the RZ has TDK, so you know THAT will look way different next week.

ULTIMATE HY

pulpclub takes the lead with two weeks to go, replacing Chien who drops to 3rd. sean14307 is poised to make a move from 4th place with TXF2 still to give him some much-needed User Rating points.

BOX OFFICE FY

Kompressr takes a slim lead over Thomassi with a total of $1.122B. However, one cannot take one's eyes off of synestro, who lurks in 11th place with $982M and TDK getting ready to spread its wings...

25 of the bottom 28 players have TDK. Everyone in th Top 17 has at least $937M, and it's hard to imagine that amount not being enough to make the cut, which means that there will be a few rosters that TDK won't be able to save. It might be the ones with TDK and Mamma Mia! that make the biggest moves.

BOX OFFICE HY

Kompressr's total in this tournament is also $1.122B, but he is spent, with basically just Wanted and HBII still going. I think it is now officially down to just him and geezer, who has $937M, HBII and TDK. Should be a great finish!!

Its kind of funny that the league I have the best chance to win is the league that i had my only semi-scare in. Back in January I thought Cloverfield might have busted me early, but I survived it and now I have a shot to win it all. Come on TDK, bring in that 220 million 10 days!

I was wondering, since Journey 3D wasn't available for selection in the ULT leagues, does that mean that every movie moves one up PTA and TOP5 wise?

I heard found out about the henry poole move around the same time that longshots was moved. I had both on my slate. I ended up picking up kitt kittrage instead of space chimps and went with x-files over meet dave. Either way I was going to end up with an empty spot on my roster.
