Music that you are absolutely SICK of hearing in films

I love the Stones, don't get me wrong, but if I hear "Sympathy for the Devil" in one more film or trailer I may scream. It is soooooo over done- I get it, he's a devil, but we love him anyway, in a suave sort of way - fanfuckintastic! I was pumped about Righteous Kill until that waaaaay overworn song got into the trailer, now the whole thing makes me queasy. I just want people to be more creative when scoring these things.

Does anyone else have this issue? What songs are starting to turn you off every time you hear it in a film?

It's not really a specific song, it's more like a situation. Like when movies use music to manipulate emotions when on screen, there is nothing there. Like the ending to In The Valley of Elah, and scenes in Crash, and Babel. Then there is the hard rock in action films. Like when they played that Sum 41 crap, not once but twice in Wanted, I just about walked out. Good thing I stayed for the ending though!

-Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain and Tennille (one of the worst songs ever written)
-Don't Cha by The Pussycat Dolls (unless it's mocked)
-gangsta rap soundtracks in films about white people (example: Drillbit Taylor)
-bad cover versions of good songs (example: Across The Universe)
-songs that don't fit the setting or style of the films or are just anachronistic (Moulin Rouge is an exception)
-the bands Simple Plan, Sum 41, Nickelback, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Good Charlotte and everyone in the "angry, tone-deaf white boy band" genre
-modern-day bubble gum pop
-bad indie artists, the kind heard in Zach Braff films or Juno
-scores by David Newman (the guy always reuses his score from Matilda) or unneccesary horror scores (example: The Strangers)
-EMO!

Finally something we can agree on Buscemi. And you are probably the only one that agrees with me. The stupid, ridiculous indie crap in Juno was so bad it hurt my ears. Almost took away from how great the movie was. Almost :D

I agree with the Juno stuff. I actually did like the opening song though. But that's because it's from many years ago, and not from people who sing about "monkey's on your back" and "hot fudge sundaes" and "sprinkles are fun" or some other shit. I don't know what is in the songs but it's annoying as fuck.

I'd also throw The Phantom Menace into that argument. Say what you want about how crappy/boring/poorly acted it was, but I thought the theme was pretty cool and worked well.

I'm not getting this?!? If movies didn't have music they would be much, much more boring. THe music helps with the emotion, it doesn't minipulate it!! Can you imagine watching the Lord of the Rings without that soundtrack? God that would be stale. Or in Top Gun when Goose dies would it have had as much impact if they didn't play that instumental song??

Speaking of Top Gun, I think that 80's movies had the best soundtracks by far. Top Gun, The Breakfast Club, Footloose, Caddyshack, Say Anything, Dirty Dancing, Purple Rain.....

That's all i can think of now...

Kenny Loggins in the king of sountracks, obviously...I wish they would make a sequal to Top Gun just so he can come back and write a sequal to "Danger Zone." However, Val Kilmer would have to lose a lot of weight and Tom Cruise would have to gain his sanity back.

I don't mean that music is bad in films, I mean there are certain situations in a lot of films that use music, rather then the plot or the story or the characters to convey emotion. Here is a good example of two differences. The end of Saving Private Ryan was good. Why? Because it used the entire movie to sum up why we should feel bad over Captain John Miller's death and what it meant to Private Ryan. There were no Velveeta Cheese orchestral numbers, there was no ridiculous emo tunes crying about how bad the scene you were watching is bad. On the other hand we have the ending of In The Valley of Elah, where after a short discussion, we zoom up on the American flag and the cheesiest, whiniest, forced, contrived, song ever. There was no summation of the plot, it was just a whiny song put in there to make the audience feel bad about itself. There are some moments where the music is just makes a mess of things. That scene defintely didn't need any extraneous whining in order to understand the significance of the plot in the grand scheme of things. Watch it yourself and see if you agree!

I agree. Haggis keeps doing that. He hates subtlety like an illegitimate child. In another non-Haggis film, PAY IT FORWARD used these terribly cheesy song that really, really made the end unbearable. As if the movie wasn't a heavy dose of idealism, it is all wrapped up in a cheesy blanket of a song where Spacey and Hunt exit their home and extras are waiting with candles.
Re:Music that you are absolutely SICK of hearing in films

Gotcha, becs, fair enough -- I am very familiar with the original Lux Aeterna.
The reason I got so defensive about it with frisky is because I know the part of the song being referred to, and it CLEARLY cannot be used for sports highlights. However, if you move your link to 2:50, that definitely qualifies.

Basically, geezer and I are referring to the last 3:40-something of the song. When I searched it, it was considered the remix of the original Lux Aeterna.

I'm sorry, but you can't help getting jacked up when you hear it.
Well, at least I can't...
