First of all here is a little article. which has some interesting things to say then i have a little video for you which goes even further. It also has some never before scenes from TDK.

Now that is good and all, but i have a question. If it does, is it still worth the $61 in Box Office and $49 in Ultimate

I'm erring on the side of TDK this season in all leagues. I really find the mid-rangers to be overpriced and downright crappy this season. I don't think it'll reach the highest OW but it will really make a serious splash all over the summer landscape. I am even leaning towards it winning 3 weekends in a row. I mean the Mummy might be a franchise but there is no comparison this time around. I'm sure PE will make some noise too but really it's not going anywhere near the effect of TDK. As much as I was talking up Hancock, it doesn't have a chance in hell to be even close to where TDK ends up when all is said and done. Are you really going to depend on The X-files-5 years too late, Semi-Brothers, The Cartoon Wars, The Dummy, and The Women, and Mamma Mia when you can have a movie that as one reviewer calls a cinematic revolution!?

TDK= spewing hugeness all over the summer.

I think it'll be worth all the pennies. People will probably be seeing it lots of times. I'd (assumingly) rather see TDK 3 times than Step Brothers or The Mummy 3 once.

As for BOW record, it's a little iffy. I think it has a shot, but the fact that it's a dark movie might not make that happen. There were young'uns that went and saw Spiderman 3.

In complete agreement with you on that anny. No chance in hell that Mummy 3 doesn't win its opening weekend. The Dark Knight will be slowing by then. My prediction for it is that it makes about 125 opening weekend, then another 65 in its second, then 35. The Mummy will open around 45-55 million, which I can't see The Dark Knight getting in its third weekend. I just hope TDK makes around 220-230 in its first 10 days, which I really think it can. Then I may be able to pull past Kompressr in the BO HY Super League final round.

Mummy 3 is the Rush Hour 3 of this year. Only it looks a hell of a lot better than Rush Hour 3 did.

'The Dark Knight' heading for biggest opening weekend ever?

I know, who cares about the kids, they will not prevent it being the huge hit it looks to be. If a movie is aimed at kids, then of course you may want to avoid a dark theme. However, as becs pointed out, its PG-13, therefore not aimed at kids. I Am Legend was a PG-13, and certainly not aimed at kids, but that still raked in more than $250m domestic despite not being very good. The WOM for TDK will be fantastic, and the drops will be minimal.

It will definitely win its first 2 weekends, and will do decent business on its third. It will, as a few have pointed out, not win its 3rd weekend, as The Mummy will bring in a decent OW BO, but that would mean in 3 weekends it will have raked in 14 top 5 points. I would fully expect it to match Iron Man's top 5's.

Also, I am pretty certain it will not break any records. Yes, it will perform very well, and probably bring in around $110-$120m OW, but it won't get close to that $150m mark.

I think that is a jaw droppingly low estimation J.I. If it makes more than $100m OW as you predict, it would have to have very dramatic drops to not sustain its advantage over likes of Iron Man and Indy IV. Remember IM and Indy both just broke that $100m mark on their 3 day OW, so if you think TDK will make $110m, then it will have to have weaker legs than either of those films to finish in the region of $275m. I just don't see that happening at all.

TDK will invite multiple viewings so everyone, and without a significant movie to counter it until The Mummy is released, I'm certain its legs will be very strong. In fact, I would be surprised if it finished up with less than $310m. I think 9 PTA and 18 top 5's would be close to the mark too.

I think one of the reasons that yall are saying its 'too dark' is because of the Heath Ledger's passing, which i do agree adds a certain factor of darkness, if thats what you want to call it. Most kids wont know about it, so it wont affect them. Am i making any sense? my head hurts

Have you *seen* the trailers? Or the previous movie for that matter? its freakin dark, its like past dark chocolate all the way to bitersweet bakers dark chocolate man. for REALS.

Yea the kids will get their parents to take them, because kids are spoiled little brats, but they won't be flooding in for sure, so its a legit concern but I don't think enough of one that it will hurt the movie's box office dollars. if they had made it kid friendly it wouldn't warrant numerous repeat viewings as I suspect it will.

All I have to say that the TDK has no huge competition, like Shryke pointed out in his column. This this is going to dominate. After a normal 50% drop that happens after HUGE openings, it's going to level out and coast to victory the rest of the summer. The only other film with this much of a clear shot to dominate is Harry Potter later this year, which could win 3 weekends in row as well.

The Dark Knight wont beat Spiderman or even Pirates because the marketplace is way to crowded for that.
When SM3 opened its nearest competition was Disturbia with 5.8mill and Fracture with only 3.7mill. The box office was dead...and the Dark Knight is entering a red hot box office. The entire summer only 3 movies (The Love Guru, Speed Racer, and Kit Kiddrige) have been out right bombs, everything else has found an audience. Meaning that Hancock, Wall-E, and Wanted will each be pulling in more business than Disturbia did. It will also have to contend with the 2nd Wkends of Hellboy 2, Meet Dave, and Journey 3d which are all tracking well. And if that were not enough it also has to open against Mamma
Mia which is sure to drag away plenty of females. With all these factors working against it I just do not see it challenging Spiderman3.

POTC 2 would be a better model since it opened in a similarily strong box office on a closer release date. That film however had stronger buzz...the whole concept had not grown old yet and it was more suitable for kids, the first pirates was also a much bigger hit than batman. So yes Batman will be better in quality but it will not unseat those 2.

I think it should open with about 127mill. If Hellboy opens with over 35mill that number will be about will be lower with around 119mill. However, if Hellboy dissapoints then it may rival pirates with 133-139mill but that is the ceiling.

I think the Mummy, The Pinneapple Express, and the X-files 2 would be better in ultimate because it is close in cost and has better potential. The Mummy has the potential to top Bournes opening weekend. The Mummy Returns opening would amount to over 85mill at todays prices and a final gross of over 250mill. So do not underestimate the fan base for this one. If the Mummy 3 can manage 175-200, Pinneaple Express gets 110-130, and the X files hits 50-75...that is a potential earning of over 400mill.

I don't think it's a bomb per se, I think it's another film that failed due to a bad marketing campaign. Honestly, any other studio would have put three times more into its marketing campaign and would have had the cajones not to open it in the middle of the summer (and a week after WALL-E). It'd be interesting to know how a solid film like this (according to critical reviews) would do in a "down month" like March or September. I can't help but blame this on the fact that its studio doesn't exist anymore and I hardly believe that many people were really overseeing this film if nothing else but out of spite.

New Line's still around (it will become a genre and arthouse label), it's Picturehouse that's defunct (along with Warner Independent).

I saw Kit Kittredge today in a big auditorium (250 seats in a megaplex) with probably 15-20 other people. I felt New Line/Warner Bros. should have opened it in August or September as it's too old fashioned of a family film to open in the heat of the summer (plus ensemble casts and live-action G rated titles are considered box office poison sometimes). Plus marketing was small because New Line chose to open Journey 3-D (a much bigger film) a week later.

Tickets for the new Batman movie The Dark Knight are so in demand, movie theatres across America plan to open all night to accommodate filmgoers.

The film, which officially opens in the U.S. next week, has sparked a frenzy among American moviegoers, who want to catch a glimpse of Heath Ledger's highly-anticipated performance as The Joker as early as possible.

Some movie theatres across the U.S. have added 6am screenings for film fanatics who can't be accommodated at the earlier midnight and 3 am showings.

Online ticket vendor Fandango.com reports over 1,500 showings for The Dark Knight have been added to theatre rosters across America. In a recent survey, the website estimated 38 per cent of ticket buyers planned to take time off work to see the superhero flick.

Batman Begins, the series' last installment, earned over $200 million (GBP100 million) at the U.S. box office after opening in the summer of 2005.

Whereabouts are you intending to go for your Batman experience Barca? I was going to go to the Hoyts at Chadstone, but now we're gonna go to the Century City Village in Glen Waverley because it's more convenient for my friends after class.

Hmm seeing it twice eh? That's going a bit too far for my tastes unfortunately :D The only movie I will EVER pay to see at the cinema twice or more would be (yep, you guessed it) the Arrested Development movie, if it ever comes out.

Oh and don't ask me how Barca, but I've managed to see Wall-E! The Dark Knight's going to have to exceed my wildest expectations to beat the heights scaled by Wall-E. Actually scratch that, there's no way it will... I'll come back in 18 hours or so and probably confirm exactly this: The Dark Knight was awesome, but Wall-E being a masterpiece still trumps it, or something to that extent. Sorry guys, fanboy-ishness does not always cut it for me... (except for THAT show). We'll see though.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ran 151 minutes and briefly held the opening weekend record. The Dark Knight would be a minute shorter from your estimate.

What you seem to be underestimating is A)The fact that not only are the midnight showing selling out, but unlike previous films like PotC - in a large number of theatres the midnight showing will be occuring on more than 2 screens per theatre, and additional showings at 3 and 6 are being added (has anyone ever heard of this being done for an opening before?). B)On top of that, as someone pointed out last week, poll results indicate that there are a significant number of fans who will be taking time off work in order to see it when it comes out, and we aren't just talking about the few whackjob fanatics here...

All of these should combine to give it a really good chance to at least keep up with top openings, if not break records.

Edit: well, it looks like slashfilm already said pretty much the same thing so I'm a latecomer - http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/07/11/will-the-dark-knight-have-a-130-million-weekend/

I will be seeing it at least twice. Once on opening night (maybe thursday if there is a midnight showing) in Wyoming where I will be for work and then again on Sunday when I get home with the wife (hopefully at an IMAX). That will be the most I have ever seen a movie at the theater in one weekend. LOL

I blew that load long ago Ash. I rated Spider-Man 2, Citizen Kane, Amelie, Fight Club, The Constant Gardner, Shawshank Redemption and Into the Wild all at 10. I may have to "Spinal Tap" it and rate TDK an 11.

I even read that some of the 3 AM and 6 AM showings are sold out also. That is crazy talk. If this keeps up for the 2nd and third weeks, there is NO WAY for this movie to make under 400 Mil. I was hoping for 350. If my wishes came true, TDK would drop that fucking Titanic movie from the top of the list. Then shortly after that we would outlaw stupid people, annoying mufflers and spoilers on compact cars, and Eddie Murphy movies. We would also retroactively impeach Dubya in 2002. The world would be much better...

Yea... so.. I was complaining that the midnight showing here was sold out for IMAX a couple weeks ago, I checked and they have added a 3:20am showing this week however it is also sold. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I did go ahead and get tickets to a midnight regular theatre, likely I will just go see it in IMAX in a week or two once they stop selling out.

That doesn't mean the movie will make more money all of a sudden, just because tickets are purchased earlier than the day of the screening.

It's not like pre-sold tickets cost more and that's why the movie will break moneymaking records. All these Fandango and MovieTickets.com reports mean is that box office attendants can sit there and twiddle their thumbs on Friday and Saturday (figuratively...) because everyone will already have their tickets.

I think a 50% fall is as bad as it gets and that's including the burst of pre-sales going on. However, I don't have much faith that it opens that high ($135M+) to begin with.

The comparison to Pirates 3 post that was made is indicative of the 'problems' (if you can call them that) I see with it. Pirates 3 and Spiderman 3 had two main things going for them that TDK doesn't - they aren't as dark and they had nothing in competition.

Pirates and Spiderman are titles/franchises that are more family and universally friendly than TDK (as much as it's making the 18-35 male demographic like me drool in anticipation). The competition comparison isn't even close. Pirates opened alongside Bug ($3.24M OW) and Spiderman opened against Lucky You ($2.71M OW), neither of which posed any threat.

TDK, on the other hand, opens against Mamma Mia (specifically placed to siphon off the women with no interest in TDK) and Space Chimps (which will pull in the families that don't want to take their little ones to see TDK). IMO, the competition and dark nature of the movie should easily be enough to keep TDK away from those crazy $150M hopes people are throwing around and will probably keep it in the $120M range.

It's going to be pretty humorous if TDK opens to a more realistic $110M-$120M and people are actually disappointed because expectations have soared completely out of control.

Re:'The Dark Knight' heading for biggest opening weekend ever?

So I've just seen it. I pity you guys in the States sometimes :D. TDK was released Wednesday July 16 over here, which practically means Tuesday in the States, 3 days in advance. As I expected it was great!

Ok I'll admit I'm not a fanboy and am definitely no film reviewer atm, but I still had reasonably high expectations, mainly from everyone else's outlandish expectations.

Of course Heath Ledger's final performance was the showcase, and he didn't disappoint. He just scared the bejesus out of everyone in the cinema when he appeared on screen, and there was always that impending sense of fear when he was around. However, I really thought the man who stole the show wasn't the primary protagonist (Batman) or antagonist (Joker), it was the the next man on the credits roll that I believe stole the show: Aaron Eckhart.

I read a bit (unfortunately I'm not gonna pass it off as my own) that I found totally spot on. Batman and Joker are the symbols for good and evil and their characters and stances do not really change throughout the film, but Harvey Dent's character is the wildcard, his character is the most intriguing IMO and Eckhart pulled it off perfectly. In all the rightful ruckus regarding Ledger's Joker, Aaron Eckhart's performance as Harvey Dent was kinda pushed to the side. He may not be an Oscar contender due to all the commotion over Ledger's final performance, but IMO his take on Dent was that equal to Ledger's Joker even, but of course it was a totally different role that was expected of him. Interesting take on what they did with his character at the end though... (No spoilers here, I promise!)

The Dark Knight is such an apt title especially given the final few scenes and Batman's position at the end, and it sure was DARK! Man those few scenes with Joker and his knife were truly quite frightening and Harvey Dent's transformation into Two-Face equally so. I'd say going by American ratings, Dark Knight would have been awfully close to an R, so lucky and close call with the PG-13 there. Maybe it was 10-20mins long, and some bits were a little superfluous, but ultimately I didn't want it to end while watching it, so I can't complain about that.

So much more to say, but I'd end up just crapping on and on about nothing ultimately. I'm just wondering where'd they would take a 3rd one if it was done, what with the ending and all (and of course with Ledger gone now RIP). As I did say before, Wall-E would probably trump The Dark Knight and I think it's just a tad above it quality-wise IMO, although they are obviously 2 very very different films. The Dark Knight rests easily as #2 for the year for me, just in front of a very different, but still a quality superhero movie in Iron Man. 9/10 from me.

11 hours and 45 minutes till D-Day

Here is your TDK update!

One record accomplished!

Nikki Finke reports

Batman Will Play In Record 4,366 Venues

UPDATE: Studio sources tell me that record-breaking advance ticket sales for Warner Bros' Batman: The Dark Knight "continue to grow at a pace unlike any other film in history". Even the number of locations in North America where the comic book caper will be playing -- 4,366 -- is an Industry record. There are also approximately 3,000 theaters that will start screening the Christian Bale/Heath Ledger actioner at 12:01AM Friday. Meanwhile, every IMAX show in New York City this weekend is sold out. By all accounts this should be Hollywood's best-ever 3-day overall North American weekend at the box office: the number to beat is last year's $151+ million. So Dark Knight's expected $130+ million opening, combined with Universal's anticipated $25+ million Momma Mia! debut, should expand the marketplace by a huge number to include those two films and all the very popular holdovers like Sony's Hancock, Universal's Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Disney/Pixar's Wall-E, Warner Bros' Journey To The Center Of The Earth, and Universal's Wanted. As a Warner Bros exec emailed me, "Should be a fun ride this weekend..."

It's hard to know what to believe at this point. Internet hype makes you think $150M is possible while actually analyzing it makes me think $135M is the absolute ceiling with something in the $120s more like it. I think I'm at the point where I'll just kick back and watch the fireworks... and the movie on opening night of course.

Why get there so early? Surely you have your seats already? I can't stand hanging around multiplexes hours before the showing. I get there just in time so that I can see all the trailers, unless if I want to listen in on other moviegoers conversations about how funny The Step Brothers looks or how awesome 10,000 BC was, or even how original Step Up 2 The Streets was (yes, I have heard that comment, about a sequel....).

You may already have a ticket but you do NOT already have seats... being there early is just an attempt at actually not being in the nosebleed seat or front row, which no matter how you try to spin it its miserable.

Re:'The Dark Knight' heading for biggest opening weekend ever?

Yea... Its not at all like that here. In genuine Theatres (stage) you get a seat number on your ticket. In movie theaters it is first come first served, so any opening show it requires that you wait in line and hope you didn't underestimate how early the majority of others were getting there.

As someone who plays WOW pretty seriously, my guild's raid (25 person dungeon encounter for those non-gamers) for tonight will actually be ending early in order for people to make it to the theaters in for people to get in line early enough.
