Sometimes, you can't help but dig through that big ass pile of movies when you enter Wal-Mart.

It's not so fun when all you can find are movies in other languages that you've never heard of or a Chuck Norris movie.

I went to Wal-Mart a few days ago and picked up some decent movies:

School of Rock
Footloose
Dances With Wolves
Thelma & Louise
Requiem For A Dream (unfortunately, it is the edited version)
The Doors (2-disc Special Edition)

And I found a 4-disc DVD set called Alfred Hitchcock: The Legend Begins, which features some of his early silent films from the 20's and 30's. And two episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents. And a 55 minutes of all his trailers from his movies. All for $5!

I've gotten from the bin:

Wallace and Gromit (the out of print Warner Bros. DVD with the extras including The Wrong Trousers commentary containing the original soundtrack)
Cabin Boy (later traded at Gamestop because it was a bare-bones DVD)
Street Fighter (actually at Best Buy but same price)
Dark City (ditto)
AMC Monsterfest Set (eight public domain titles, including Night Tide, The Brain That Wouldn't Die and Dementia 13)
a three pack of martial arts films containing nine films (including uncut widescreen versions of three of Chiba's Street Fighter series)
The Simple Life: Season One (for my sister, big fan of that show)
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls

Most recent cheap picks from The Warehouse - which is pretty much the Wal-Mart for cheap dvds:

1. Collateral 2 Disc Special Edition
2. Art School Confidential
3. Thumbsucker
4. Elephant
5. Gaslight
6. The Lady Vanishes

I hate trawling through them, but you can definitely get some bargains. I wonder if the people in charge know how good some of these movies are?? I mean, I know it was a little more expensive, but for the equivalent of $8 I recently saw the two disc sp. editon of Hot Fuzz. It only came out last year and its already bargain bin prices. I wouldn't mind but I bought it full price on its first day of release!!

The bad thing is that most of the $5 DVDs at Wal-Mart are usually fullscreen.

Some I've gotten from there:

National Security
Jerry Maguire (SE)
The Bone Collector
Fever Pitch
Beverly Hills Cop (all three SE's)
xXx (SE)
transformers2

Jumanji, wedding singer, ghost in the darkness, robocop, pagemaster, zoolander, the whole nine yards, weekend at bernies, beverly hills cop 1an2, cheech and chongs up in smoke, shanghai noon, queen of the damned, paycheck, timeline, storm of the century, small soldiers, south park movie, spawn, terminator 3, the one, top gun, tomb raider, not another teen movie, dogma, footloose, cabin fever, the bone collector, anacondas, 3,000 miles to graceland, xxx, equilibrium, ernest goes to camp, roughly half of my friday the 13ths, evolution, once upon a time in mexico, american history x, night at the roxbury, monty python and the holy grail, kung pow, joe somebody, mars attacks, ace ventura, the mask, and a few others I'm probably forgetting about all came from a bargain bin at wal mart. All of which are a valued part of my collection. Mainly because it's about a tenth of my collection.

I saw this thread a while back and because I am a career associate with the company I thought I could provide some information regarding new titles. The studios ship new titles for the $5 bin in bulk to the stores during a reset week which occurs 3-4 times a year. After this reset week the same titles circulate until the next reset. At times you will see a studio try to "cash in" on an untimely death(i.e. Steve Irwin and Heath Ledger) with massive quantities being shipped to stores. I will give the studios credit for not pulling these titles from the $5 circulation, repackaging the product, and raising the price. At any rate, this past week was a reset and there are quite a few new titles and some older ones that have been out of circultaionfor some time. The following is what I've seen so far.

1. The Aviator (2-disc WS)
2. Syriana
3. Second Hand Lions
4. The Dukes of Hazard
5. Real Genius
6. Sleepless in Seattle (Sp. Ed)
7. Bewitched
8. Ultraviolet
9. Antwone Fisher
10. Matrix Reloaded
11. Matrix Revolutions
12. Sahara
13. Caddyshack (20th Anniv)
14-16. Austin Powers (I.M.o.M., TSWSM, GM)
17. Hard Candy

I was really surprised to see Ellen Page's Hard Candy in the new set. There were only a few copies of it in comparison to the other titles, but thought it was worth mentioning becausing I thought it was surprisingly good. It was also the first movie that disappeared from the bin and into carts, so it may be hard to find, but worth the effort of digging for.

I'll will be getting the 3 Austin Powers, Antwone Fisher, & maybe Ultraviolet. Gotta go to Wal-Mart on Monday (don't go near that place on the weekends, too crowded).

Its ALWAYS crowded at the store I work at. I'm so glad I spend about 80% of my time in the back, away from stupid customers. Unfortunately they are sometimes unavoidable.
