I think "massive" was a bit of an over projection, but it is doing better than expected:

The news was even better for Paramount’s The Spiderwick Chronicles with a monstrous 81% Saturday increase. The well-reviewed and expensive family fantasy film actually finished #2 for the day with an estimated $7.96M. I’ve raised my 5-day estimate to $26.26M, 3rd for the period.

Thats why i asked. Although this week will be big for me no matter what. I have a mix of slates with Jumper, Step Up 2, In Bruges, Fools Gold, and Definitely Maybe.

I think spiderwick will be massive. I think it has a lot more potential than Terebithia, which had a good box office last year, and it is a very successful children's book. It will be THE film that every pre-teen will want to go see with their parents next weekend. I think it will be tight between that and Jumper, but I think Jumper has had the marketing to get the top spot.

Now that the numbers are starting to come out, what is "massive"? It's not first, second or third place.

Okay maybe I overestimated Spiderwick to an extent, but I think it has got a good chance of taking second place still. And I also think its gonna have better legs than Jumper and probably not suffer as big a drop next week. We all know how badly a film does in its second week if it has had negative reviews. Spiderwick has had mostly positives, so will not suffer too much of a drop. So I can see a 50% drop for spiderwick next week, probably giving it about 12-13m for the weekend, while Jumper will probably suffer a 65% drop, meaning it will be almost a dead heat for the two.

i think a lot of us made that same mistake surfer....overestimating chronicles....and for the FM price, nothing short of a 35-40 mil OW performance would be satisfactory....sadly, it missed out bigtime....
