I figured I'd reply in this topic instead of creating a whole new one for this week since there's only one date change that has much relevance to the current game:

"Meet the Spartans" has been moved up a week, from 2-1-08 to 1-25-08.

This is a good move for 'Meet the Spartans.' Yeah, they'll be competing against 'John Rambo' but what they WON'T be competing against is more significant: annual box office obliterator 'The Superbowl.' The Jessica Alba re-make 'The Eye' still opens against the Superbowl. It wasn't going to beat 'Meet the Spartans' but now...

You're right, Roode, horror films like that tend to do well over the Super Bowl weekend. Mostly because they appeal to the teenage girls who really could care less about the Super Bowl. It's not a blockbuster by any means, but here are the top 5 opening weekends for films going against the Super Bowl:

1. When a Stranger Calls - $21.6 million
2. Boogeyman - $19 million
3. You Got Served - $16.1 million
4. She's All That - $16.0 million
5. The Messengers - $14.7 million

Seems to give a little inkling as to The Eye's chances. (I also find it funny that the poster says 'credits are not yet final and are subject to change.) And I do agree with you, moving up "Meet the Spartans" was probably a good idea for the studio. Yes, it's going up against Rambo, but last year Epic Movie opened against Smokin' Aces on the last January weekend, and beat it. I don't think the Spartans will beat Rambo though.

well, the eye should open pretty decently now, and maybe add on a bit of business that would have gone the Spartans' way....so not a great opening, but possibly a solid 15-18 mil??

Yeah I think that sounds reasonable Ashkul. I mean you've got two good things in Jessica Alba and (although a remake) a good horror pedigree. 'The Eye' might bring in a pretty good audience if anyone saw the original -- which I recommend, BTW. I like it to win that weekend now. Good move for both films!

it's priced at $16 though, which means it would have to get at least 10 Top 5, 4-5 PTA and about 50-60 mil to make it worth it, coz you just KNOW the UR is going to suck....

What makes it 'worth it' is relative to the player, though; there's not an absolute benchmark that indicates, "oh, yeah, I can pick this now." I mean, it may not meet your standards, but if it's a tad expensive, there's always the films that are underpriced too to make up for it...

All that being said, I still probably wouldn't put The Eye on my slates.
