As to what might be your favorite SNL film of all time, what could it be? Do you consider The Blues Brothers to be a "sketch"? If so, that'd be my guess.

Bingo! I won't let you know when it is coming, but it won't be for a very long time.

To be honest, I've never met one, but if I did meet someone who only included films in their Top 100 because of their importance in cinema's history, I'd punch them.

Well clearly, I have nothing to worry about there. I think everyone is going to just LOVE my selection for number 79 on my list. I just can't wait for that one.

Exactly numbersix. It's one thing to acknowledge what a film or group of films may have brought to cinema, it's another thing to find them great on a personal level.
But there is absolutely no interest in putting up a list of such films, as anyone can do so. It's easy to spot films that have made cinema evolve in good ways.
What's more interesting is to come up with films that made us, you, me, evolve as a spectator, as a film buff, as a human being. And that includes films that may be primarly entertainment of course. Sometimes, a good, well made entertainment can be as important cinematographically as an important auteur's film.

So Chien, we have agreed all along. What I meant in my arguement of best vs favorite is exactly what you just said. I think that this type of list as you describe here, is exactly what I mean by a "best" films list. Now of course some of these will also cross over into my favorite list, but clearly not all of them. Best films are the ones that are universally reckognized for cinematic achievements. Favorite films are what you get the most enjoyment out of. End of story.

Yes Geezer, but what you don't want to understand (lol) is I do not recognize what YOU call a "Best List" as a "Greatest films" list. Because in my opinion, you can only call a film "one of the greatest" if you have PERSONALLY enjoyed watching it on a deep level, while what YOU call a "Best list" is a film for which you feel no passion, no desire to see again... only a technical quality. And THAT, to me, has nothing to do with what I call "The greatest".

So you can't show respect to a film that you may not have enjoyed even though it was everything that the director wanted it to be, was critically acclaimed and and it is an important film in cinematic history? That seems pretty arogant that you cant reckognize greatness because you didn't personally like it so much. I mean I don't like the Godfather and it is nowhere on my list, but I reckognize its importance to cinema. I know you totally won't get this analogy because you are French and don't follow baseball, but anyone in America will. I personally despise the New York Yankees, absolutely hate them, I am a die-hard Red Sox fan. But I can respect them as the greatest baseball franchise of all time, as they have won more championships than any other team. I can reckognize greatness even when it doesn't appeal to me. It is a respect issue. That is where becs analogy to classical music comes in. That is the best I can do in arguing the point, and I really don't want to beat a dead horse any longer. This thread is supposed to be about my list, not the semantics of best vs. favorite.

It's all a matter of point of view Geezer. All a matter of taste.
Greatness is one thing. But my take on the subject is that Art is not an objective thing. It's subjective. Films are not an objective thing to enjoy, to like, or to find great. It loses all its sense if you don't make a film, or a musical tune, or a painting, your own.
There will always be someone else in the world, your neighbour, your sister, or a guy living at the other side of the planet, to find greatness where you don't. So what I say is, praise and respect the films YOU want to praise and respect. The films YOU enjoy the most. And not those which MUST be, or those for which you'll find an admirer anyway. That's why for me, there will always only be on list, the list of my favorite films, the ones I find to be the best.

Sorry if you think it's just beating a dead horse. I enjoyed our conversation very much actually

I have too, Chien, but at this point all the points have been made, and if the arguement continued it would just be repeats of what has previously been said. All I can say, is that with my list, you can rest assured that these films are all of the films that I enjoy the most, and the ones that I want to watch over and over. So this list has nothing to do with this arguement. I made this list exactly how you would make yours, with the films that I enjoyed most, regardless of "importance" or the "technical" aspect of film. I do find that there is a difference, but this list is the one that is all about my own personal tastes. If it is on this list, I love the movie, regardless of what anyone else thinks about it.

That's the most important thing geezer. As long as they are your favorite films, that's the most interesting list you can come up with. And that's why I keep waiting to see what odd film will apear next on your list

Mrs. Doubtfire gosh, I haven't thought about that movie in awhile but it was freakin hilarious... "It was a run by fruiting!". Cool Runnings is right up there too. I definitely understand your choices considering your list seems heavily weighted comedy, while mine has all of about 5 (if that) comedies. I'm still hammering out the order, but I believe my list will similarly not fit anyone's expectations - I think about half the movies haven't been mentioned on anyones lists so far so it should be interesting..

About a quarter of my list is comprised of comedies, with some others that can be considered funny like family movies. But the majority of the films are not comedies, it just seems like that because there are a lot of them towards the back of the list.

I'll post the next 5 before I go to bed, as here on the East coast it is technically the next day. A couple older films in this round, as well as the first of the 7 entries from 2007 (yeah, it was a damn good year). Also my favorite Disney film of all time. And of course, an homage to the late Heath Ledger, who brought me this addition to my 100 favorite movies of all time.

101. A Christmas Story
100. Rush Hour
99. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
98. Snatch
97. Mission: Impossible II
96. The Bad News Bears
95. X-Men
94. Wayne’s World
93. U-571
92. Shrek
91. Wayne’s World 2
90. Cool Runnings
89. Mrs. Doubtfire
88. Home Alone
87. Dumb and Dumber
86. The Poseidon Adventure

85. A Knight's Tale
84. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

I'm going to bed, for all you in different time zones, leave me something to wake up to.

In the case where there have been remakes (unfortunately this is the case more often than not) you should probably specify which version you are talking about - though I can only assume you mean the original Poseidon Adventure as the new one was utterly ridiculous... just for clarity's sake.

A Knight's Tale is a great pick, I am so torn about it myself, such a great movie, but just way too many to fit into a top 100!
