I knew my stating about Aliens and Alien Resurrection would cause some reactions.. but come on, I thought there would be at least one person to back me up ? Am I really the only one to think that way ?
Ok then, I stand alone against everyone !
But I'm too proud and sure of my taste to back down. No gentlemen, I know the world is not ready to read and accept this, but mark my words : Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Alien Resurrection is a fine underrated film.
I think you guys completely missed the point of the film (of course you did, that's what everyone says when someone doesn't feel the same about a film *lol*).
No, Alien Resurrection is not a "balls-out" action film à la Aliens. No, Alien Resurrection is not a tense, claustrophobic horror movie à la Alien and Alien3.
No it is not, it was not meant to be. Alien Resurrection is a pure Jeunet film : a character piece, totally iconoclast, more interested in the details, the imagery, the absurd, the discomfort. It is not a plain action film. The man took advantage of the weakness of the plot, and stretched everything, from the comedic sides of the characters (Dominique Pinon in his wheelchair ? brilliant !!!) to the pure ambiguity of Ripley's character, which is not a simple heroin anymore... she is more... she is the protagonist and the monster, the heroin and the alien. The lines are more blurred than ever. (but still, the underwater sequence is totally amazing !!!!!)
Spit on Jeunet's work as much as you like... but I'm telling you, maybe you didn't watch the film with your full attention on.

If it's a character piece, why are all the characters so one-dimensional

...[I can't] remember now.. aren't you one of the few people around here who has seen my batboy picture?
Must've blocked it out, sorry. [Grin]

No.

Yes.

Yes. [Grin] Now you know what it's like for me when I'm trying to sing the praises of Starship Troopers, or Superman Returns, or Meet Joe Black.
And, I mean, dude, come on: Even A.K.A. thinks you're out of your tree. Not a good sign, partner.
...[G]entlemen, I know the world is not ready to read and accept this, but mark my words : Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Alien Resurrection is a fine underrated film.
'Kay.

And knowing is half the battle.

[Snort] You were doing a better job defending the film before you actually started TALKING about the film, Chien...
... [But] still, the underwater sequence is totally amazing !!!!!
No, the underwater sequence COULD have been totally amazing. But, like everything else in the film, it fell well short of its potential.
Spit on Jeunet's work as much as you like... but I'm telling you, maybe you didn't watch the film with your full attention on.
'Kay. First, I didn't "get" the point of the film. Now, I just wasn't paying attention. Tomorrow, it'll be that I was asleep, or temporarily insane, or a Communist, or something. [Grin]
I'll tell you what, Chien: I'll watch it again. I'll make certain to be awake, to pay attention and to try REALLY hard to "get" it. Then we'll talk.
I have nothing against Jeunet, btw. I loved A Very Long Engagement, one of the best and most underrated films of 2004. And The City of Lost Children is one of the most unique and imaginative films I've ever seen, reminding me quite a bit of recent Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and early Alex Proyas, all of whom I admire. On the other hand, I couldn't friggin STAND Amélie, and I can't believe how overinflated its reputation is.
I remain, as always...
Nico.

Now come on guys, I think you are being a tad harsh on chien. After all he is French, so he is just protecting one of his own!!
Secondly, Im rather the fan of Resurrection too. So Chien does have some backing here. Now this may be because of my obsession for Winona Ryder (who, might i add is hotter than hot in resurrection), or because I adore everything Jeunet touches. Or it may be because I thought it was another slant on the Alien series which I enjoyed. Jeunet brought the comedy of Delicattesen to a sci fi franchise. And I enjoyed it. Some of the things in that film were not perfect, and I HATED the hybrid, but there was a lot I liked about the film. As has already been stated, the underwater sequence is great, I like the idea of the cloning of Ripley, and I thought Winona Ryder's character was great. I would be proud to display it alongside the other Aliens in the series.
Also, Nico, I got your back on Starship Troopers, a marvel of a B-Movie spoof which only Verhoeven could have achieved. It is so rewatchable too.

Well, fine. Then, I'll start extolling the virtues of Joel Schumacher, since he's an American. (No... really, I won't.)
Jeunet brought the comedy of [Delicatessen] to a sci fi franchise.
Hey, thanks, Herald! Now I know why I hated Alien Resurrection so much. Although, I have to admit, I love Delicatessen.
Nico, I got your back on Starship Troopers...
Great. Now I have nothing to complain about.
I remain, as always...

To return to the topic....
I was accepted into a screenwriting masterclass with John Sayles today. He was a very nice guy, very open, very simple. He had plenty of tips about writing and selling your script. I didn't realise he worked on so many films, such as The Fugutive, Apollo 13, Mimic, etc.

WOW, Six... I am in awe. His Lone Star is a favorite of mine, one of the best ensemble films ever made and (in my opinion) the very best film of its genre of multiple, overlapping-narrative stories (which includes Crash and Traffic).
Nice one.
I remain, as always...
Nico.
