I agree. Spiderwick will open Top 2 without question. Also, the fact that next weekend is President's Day Weekend is much more important than it being Valentine's Day. That means that next Sunday is really just another Saturday business-wise. The demographic that this means the most for is the family audience who won't have to worry about going to the movies on a school night.

I will personally have to hurt someone if I see another movie with Freddie Highmore perform less than stellar in the box office. I don't think Spiderwick will win the BO, but I do expect it to be a great movie ad expect to see it riding the coattails of whatever movie *is* topping the BO.

I think this weekend is going to be incredibly interesting...I predict this top 5 will be very close for all 5 spots. The number 5 might be very close in gross to the number 1...I see the top 5 playing a little something like this:

Spiderwick Chronicles
Definitely,Maybe
Jumper
Fool's Gold
27 Dresses

But like I said this could really go any of a number of ways. This is a really interesting weekend.

Yep. I agree.

This will depend entirely on how much V-Day affects BO sales. I'm betting a lot and I think you're right Stn.

I'm gonna have to go with Step Up 2 here, although it will depend on how many theaters it debuts in.

See, I'm not too sure about step up. I mean, I know the first one was a huge hit, bt I'm thinking the lack of originality(even for a sequel) and Channing Tatum are going to hurt it.

I think it'll open like mad money at maybe 7th or 8th. I chose 27 dresses, because it's having some awesome staying power, but I think we need to keep an eye on other holdovers such as Hannah Montana and Juno. They're anything but out of the question for top 5.

I have definitely, maybe on all of my slates...I need it to do well. Especially since it's pretty expensive considering other cheaper options that can perform just as well if not better.

Damn.

Sewww... I just got back from Jumper. All I can say is, did i seriously spend money on that crap?????
...Oh right there was a hot guy with an accent *grin*, mmmm Billy Elliot's all growed up!

But seriously, this was the worst movie I've seen in a long while. I was hoping for Definitely Maybe, but the friend I was with clearly wanted to see jumper despite playing the "whatever you want" card.. so i went for it despite my better judgement.
The movie doesn't have even the slightest hint of a plot. Now the friend I went with is not the most discerning moviewatcher, not a bad thing, but she'll watch anything... and even she came out of the movie like "they really didn't explain anything" (and not, this wasn't out of mysterious qualities, it was out of sheer lack of back story, front story or side story of any kind). So it Jumps from location to location, which is really fairly fun and cool conceptually, but poorly executed in that it just left me with zero attachment to the characters, no understanding of where they come from, where they going, or really even what the hell is going on other than "we're on a sand dune, oh now were in the arctic tundra..."
And for real.. Rachel Bilson & Hayden Christensen = VOMIT (granted I thought they were both hacks before this movie). Samuel L. Jackson kept up his recent reputation as utter camp. On top of the crap acting, the 2 best action sequences are both in the trailers (car and bus), other than that they didn't at all take advantage of fun choreography for any sort of awe inspiring fights or anything, a couple mediocre ones that is all.

I need to go rinse this gunk out of my brain... ick

edit: Oh and, for a 7pm Friday night showing at the largest theatre in the nearby region, it was less than 1/4 full. I'd say I'm not the only one who was reluctant.

Becs, don't worry, your not the only one that feels that way about that movie. I think it will be Cloverfield decaf extra lite edition. All it's fans will see it on Thursday and Friday, and then it's gonna be playing in front of empty seats.

I think the Weekend will go like this:

Step Up 2
Fool's Gold
Spiderwick
Jumper
Definitely, Maybe

I don't know. I think Spiderwick's President's day gross will help it out quite a bit. Like I said this one might be pretty close.

Gosh, some people are sticking to their doomsday predictions for Jumper EVEN THOUGH the tracking numbers say Jumper should easily win the weekend. Seriously JackO, I think by the time you posted these, Mase along with various other sources had announced Jumper as the winner, yet you still think it'll come 4th.

Let me make one thing clear, it doesn't matter how crappy Jumper is/was. It was ALWAYS going to win the weekend. There was no doubt about that. I mentioned this in a thread I created a few weeks ago entitled Jumper vs Spiderwick Chronicles, saying Jumper would perform like Ghost Rider & Spiderwick like Bridge To Terabithia-which were their counterparts this time last year. Jumper may end up with a little less than Ghost Rider's as will Spiderwick to Bridge, but close enough. Even comparing their critical reaction would result in similar outcomes. (Jumper & Ghost Rider's critical response almost totally negative, while reactions to Spiderwick & Bridge generally positive).

I didn't account for the wildcard which ended up being Step Up 2 The Streets though, I never talked up its B.O potential (because really it never deserved my mentioning it) but I did have some faith in it, putting it on some slates...

I think spiderwick will be massive. I think it has a lot more potential than Terebithia, which had a good box office last year, and it is a very successful children's book. It will be THE film that every pre-teen will want to go see with their parents next weekend. I think it will be tight between that and Jumper, but I think Jumper has had the marketing to get the top spot.

Now that the numbers are starting to come out, what is "massive"? It's not first, second or third place.
