You want a source? How about from the horse's mouth itself?

When my column came out last week, in which I showered this film with praise, imagine how surprised I was to get an e-mail that same day from Rod Lurie, the guy who directed it!

No, I am NOT making this up... the guy in the big seat sent a thank-you note to little ol' me. After I picked my jaw off the floor (I mean, someone of consequence actually READING my column? Wow!), I asked him that same question; how big a release was his film getting? Here is what he replied:

"CHAMP will be released on about 1500 screens. We thought about a platform, but the marketing gurus think this is a better idea. I am not so sure. A lingering release may help Sam with his Oscar chances... "

I may wait until the day it opens to make my choice, but if Box Office Mojo's Theater Count bears it out, it would seem that this will not be a PTA bonanza after all. It may do well commercially, and it will be very good for your User Ratings category, but $13 is a lot to spend for just that.

Hope that helps, ashkul.

Wow, Shryke,

Great story. Yo must have been buzzing about after that. I have to confess it's pretty decent of a director to do that. The closest I've come is arguing with Zak Penn in an IMDB forum about his film Incident at Loch Ness. Being a writer he took my vicious criticism quite well.

Here's to the famous people...

Westerns are always a tough call. I'd give the edge to Yuma right now, for the following reasons:

1. It's out first.
2. It seems to have a lot of action.
3. It's got just as much star power.
4. It's shorter.

Yes, Jesse James, for all of its kudos, is a very long movie (or so I've heard), which means fewer showings. They'll both do well in U.R., but I think Yuma is the safer bet overall.

And yeah, I am famous... who'da thunk it?!

I was famous once. Wait. No I wasn't. I did ride in a limo though. And no not to prom. Although I did that too. Worst experience ever.

If they go with 1500 theatres then I suggest that 'Resurrecting the Champ,' has limited value in Ultimate Moguls. Should score some very healthy iMDb but the theatre count has this going the way of 'Black Snake Moan.' Too many theatres for PTA value, too few theatres for box office or Top 5 point value.

Drop the film -- The Yari Group strikes again.

Good Point A_Roode Black Snake Moan Tanked and in came out in a similar amount of theaters which is a shame because that was a great film but anyways i think Resurrecting The Champ will do well look what The Iliusonist did at same time last year.

In the game of comparisons, how about "The Constant Gardener" ?
Just like "Resurrecting the Champ", it opened at the end of August, in a bit less than 1500 theaters, with excellent reviews and word of mouth. Opening WE was around $9M with a $6.000 PTA. The movie had legs and went on collecting more than $30M.

Box Office Mojo estimates 1500 screens for this next weekend. What surprises me is Mr. Bean's Holiday at only 1580...

I really hope my little four screen gets War and not mr. beans holiday. I want to see Bean and all. And Im not gonna be pissed if we don't get war. But it sure would save some gas. And Bean can wait til DVD.

Well I got half my wish. We aren't getting Beans holiday. But we aren't getting war either. Man. This sucks. I need to transfer to a bigger theater.

Unfortunately the great reviews don't appear to be enough to save 'Resurrecting The Champ.' Wish I was wrong when I predicted this but the release strategy has sabotaged what should have been a very strong film. Great buzz for Samuel L Jackson though -- anyone see the film and will he be remembered and/or rewarded during award season?
