An article in the new entertainment weekly about Lohan got me wondering which young actor has the greatest potential to become a huge star. Like Julia Roberts or Will Smith. All of these actors have already "made it", but none are household names...yet. I think Shia and Keira are the frontrunners.

Shia Lebouf is quickly becoming a big name star, and I think the critics have voiced as much also with Disturbia and Transformers this year.

Dane Cook is hardly a "young" star, he is at least 10 years older than the others listed.

I think Anton Yelchin should be on the list also..

The only girl I can think of is Amanda Seyfried, however I don't see her getting beyond the "hot chick" typecast on the big sceen.. however she does an excellent job on the small screen on Big Love.

Edit: also, Anne Hathaway, if she isn't already there, she will be soon.

I have to go with Scarlett Johansson, by a narrow margin over Shia LaBeouf and Keira Knightley.

All of those actors have picked very good roles so far, and their star will only increase.

James McAvoy has made a name for himself with his roles in Narnia and Last King of Scotland, so look for him a lot in the future.

Jonah Hill has potential, as long as he isn't always typecast as the chubby guy with the Jewfro.

Lindsay Lohan? Why is she even in this group?

For some reason, I hardly consider actors like Topher Grace, Scarlett Johansson, Keira Knightley, and Rachel McAdams with a couple films under their belt hardly belong in the same category as rookies like Zac Efron. But from that list, I'll have to go with Shia. I also really like James McAvoy, and been a fan of his since his Children of Dune performance.

Isla Fisher was born in 1976. I wouldn't consider her a young star. Amanda Bynes is an important one you missed though.

i read line 1, and a light went on in my head...."The award for mogul with most mainstream opinions goes to....SHRYKE!! oh wait that was another poll!!!!"....hehe

but my opinions are exactly the same - scarlett ahead of keira and shia....

only person i disagree with you on is lindsay, shryke....girl's got talent, we just rarely ever see any of it through the drunken haze of DUI's, rehab stints and a couple of delinquent parents.... but believe me, where 'actresses' like paris talk about a movie's thematic content in terms of "that's hot!!", lindsay actually makes some insightful comments....

She would make so many good points and get casted for so many better films if she didn't party so much and take as many drugs while driving a 2005 Mercedes SL-65 convertible.

a lot of laboeuf fans out there eh?? i'm still of the opinion that he hasn't proved himself quite yet....sure he was good in bobby, disturbia and transformers, but he hasn't had an oscar/golden globe nominated (or worthy) role like scarlett and keira have....once he does that, then he'll be on my list....

Now by 'greatest American actor in the years to come' did you actually mean 'greatest Canadian actor' Chienfantome?

You picked the right actor though!

You're right A_Roode, I should have formulated it like this : 'greatest actor in the american cinema in the years to come'.
Thank you Canada for this gem of an actor

With 'Fracture' out on dvd now, here's hoping people continue to discover and appreciate his work (though in fairness Anthony Hopkins steals the show!). Reminds me of a young (but un-hell-raising) Sean Penn: bold in his choices and fearless in choosing roles that interest him, not just going the Cuba Gooding Jnr way and appearing in anything offered to him. You can be generally hopeful that Ryan Gosling won't let you down with a bad movie.

A_Roode, you read my mind
That's definitly how I feel about Gosling, he is an actor in the vein of Sean Penn. Dary, uncompromising, and intense.
