American Gangster: is by far the surest of the bunch, it's this year's The Departed

Charlie Wilson's War: has a great cast, a great director and a storyline that just screams "awards"... but I've seen next to nothing on it so far, so I'll reserve judgement.

Reservation Road: looks like a great movie, but it would be a "dark horse" pick if it were to be nominated.

Lions For Lambs... no offense to Robert Redford, but I was extremely underwhelmed by the trailer. It looks pretentious as hell, and even a stellar cast won't help if that's the case (All the King's Men, anyone?)

Resurrecting the Champ: could be the little film that sneaks in and steals it. If public and critical response continues to be as positive as it has so far, it's got a real chance.

Here are some other possibilities (depending on reviews and reception):

3:10 to Yuma
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
In the Valley of Elah
We Own the Night
No Country For Old Men
Becoming Jane
Atonement
Sweeney Todd

Great post. Here's my suggestions:

American Gangster- duh
Reservation Road- this year's Little Children
In the Valley of Elah- this year's "issue" movie
Margot at the wedding- this year's bittersweet comedy
Charlie Wilson's War- this year's Tom Hanks movie

To refer to Shryke, Becoming Jane will get nothing, nothing at all. Reviews have been bad. Assassination of JJ may be too out there. No Country for Old Men is an interesting possibility, but who knows how the Coens will fare. 3:10 to Yuma will get acting noms, but not sure about best film. Maybe.

american gangster - no comment - canvassed to well already
becoming jane - i wish it did (anne hathaway seemed to have had it coming), but if the reviews are bad....
resurrecting the champ - good things are all i hear
assassination - get outta town!!
3:10 to yuma - sure, sounds like a winner (pardon the expression)
don't know about many of the others....we don't tend to hear a lot, living among the moose in canada....

though i'll grind/mash/grate/crush/powder/granulate/flatten the academy if ratatouille doesn't win the animation oscar....

also, transformers a shoo-in for the best visual effects in a movie (and what about sound editing eh - megatron and little whatsisface the 'orgasmatron' were wicked!!)??

Am I the only one who really doesn't watch or care about these awards. I'm assuming your talking about the oscars or the academy awards. Either way every time I watch them I just get more and more pissed off because the only films that ever win anything are the artsy pictures. Don't get me wrong. The mtv awards suck too. Best kiss goes to two guys two years running. BS. It was funny. Yes. Best kiss. No. Anyways. The only reason I watch the mtvs is because they're funny and generally tend to have funny people on them. Academies and Oscars are boring.
The only awards show I've ever been pleased with was the horror movie awards that spike did. I was only dissapointed with one award. Although I don't remember what it was. Anyways. Just me thinking aloud.

Just like when Lord of the Rings and won lots of Oscars, 'cause that was definitely an 'artsy film.'

cRAzY, you are not the only one who doesn't care about the awards. Regretably, I am even more cynical about them becuase I pay attention to them find out what I don't want to see. Too often the politics and value judgements in the 'great' are too heavyhanded and simplified (war is bad, liberals are good, the rich are milking you dry), too late to award a worty person (last years Oscar should have gone to...), or are so in house that your ctypical filmgoer doesn't care (Little Miss Sunshine, Sideways, the list goes on.

Transformers probably won't be considered for Best Picture by the voting committee. Should it be? Yes. Should it win? Probably, not but the mere fact that it isn't even in the conversation despite the fact that lots of people saw it is wrong.

This is not the palce for the Titanic defense. Titanic was the exception, not the rule. In an industry that feels that Annie Hall rightfully won Best Picture over Star Wars even today, I stand firm on my opinion, especially with modern voter mindsets.

I think the two Joaquin Phoenix films have a good chance, Reservation Road and We Own the Night.

Grace is Gone has a good chance too as it looks like this year's LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE.

Transformers should be considered for Best Picture? That's a laugher. Commercial success doesn't equal good movie -- Norbit made $95 million, remember. Transformers does not try to be anything more than a summer action movie, so why should it be considered as anything more than that? Besides the CGI and graphics rendering, there really isn't anything remarkable about it.

It'll probably reap 'em in at the MTV Movie Awards, though.

come on jameydunne, transformers for best picture?? i doubt seriously....though i DID mention before that it's a shoo-in for the visual effects and could do something in sound editing non?? but not best picture....the picture as a whole didn't have a message/point/theme/whatever else you may call it and though the acting (laboeuf at least) impressed, it's nowhere near Oscar glory heights....

It's my feeling that none of the movies released so far will make it onto the best picture list this year....also, i'll take a chance and predict that either american gangster or resurrecting the champ will win (i'm told to expect a nomination at least in lead actor/supporting actor for champ)

Transformers has to get at least two awards, maybe not best picture though. American Gangster has the power to take that award right now.
