I really couldn't download and watch a movie. Firstly because its WRONG, and secondly why would anyone want to watch a film on a computer? It completely defies my reasoning for watching movies in the first place. Sitting at a computer watching a movies is an isolated, uncomfortable and unemotional way to watch a movie. When I watch a movie, I want to get right into it. I wanna relax, sit back and watch the movie in all its widescreen capabilities. Watching a movie on a 15' screen would not do it for me.

I could not watch Transformers on a computer, the awesomness of that movie would be completely lost on a small screen with crappy speakers. I could not watch Boys Don't Cry on a computer, it is a movie which pulls you in and makes you literally cry. I could not get into that emotional state on a computer.

Dont get me wrong, I use the computer to watch trailers and things on youtube, but for movies I wanna be in my most optimal and comfortable space. That would either be down the local cinema, or watching it on a dvd with a proper tv and decent speakers. A small, grainy picture just doesn't do it for me.

It's a fair point, SS, but what I actually do is burn the movies as data files onto a DVD, and my DVD player plays them perfectly. I couldn't watch most movies on my little laptop either.

As for it being wrong, I don't really see how, to be honest. Sure, I'm contributing to the potential ruin of cinema, but I don't particularly considering that I end up disliking about half the films I see anyway. If films were better made, I'd probably have more respect and not download as much.

I also have a policy towards music. I have no moral problem with downloading albums from major-label bands. But I will always buy a CD from a band I like who's on an independent label, as I want to show my support. Although lately I'm kind of inbetween as I buy all my records from mp3sale.ru, which is technically legal (in Russia, anyway) but a fraction of the cost of places like Itunes (The 'I' stands for I-like-to-rip-you-off).

And as for Frisky's recommendation, I seriously doubt the new Funny Games is any worse than the original version, but you may as well watch the remake as at least you can look at Naomi Watts

Maybe its just me, but I love the fact of actually owning the legal thing. I have never even bought a pirate copy. Legal dvds usually have a lot more in terms of extras also. And furthermore, I like being able to display my dvds, and I guess if I burned everything to disc I would be less inclined to do so. Its probably an ego thing, well Im pretty sure of it actually. But the feeling I get when someone walks in my house and looks at either my dvd or cd collection is great. Its like a feeling of respect. They go rifling through checking out which movies they want or have never even heard of, and I feel great. If I was burning my discs, I wouldn't get this satisfaction. I know its a bit sad, but its just one of things that I am totally proud of.

I would like to believe you there, six, but I dont. It just sounds like an excuse to download. Films could always be better, but I am pretty satisfied by what I watch. I very rarely buy a dvd and after watching it feel cheated. I usually like most of the movies I watch because it is either from a genre, director or actor I like or I read a review beforehand. I will not watch Meet The Spartans and expect it to be good. In fact I wouldn't even expect it to be ok. I expect it to be terrible, I see the trailer, and it looks terrible. Therefore, I dont watch it. I don't need to download the movie to find out. And even if I did watch the dvd and feel let down, I wouldnt use that as an excuse not to buy a dvd anymore. I would at least try a movie Im not certain on, and if I don't like it, then I just note that down as one of the few times I am dissapointed by a movie. But at least I gave it a go. I may have loved it, but if not then so be it.

I kind of agree with you there regarding major labels, although a band can quite easily go from being on a major label, and if there sales are not sufficient, they find themselves without a label. So technically, by not buying their cds or downloads legally, you effectively have a say in the outcome of that band. Im not gonna acuse you of causing every a major label band to lose their label, but you hardly help the matter.

Again though, maybe its just me living in the dark ages, but I love my cd collection, I love the physical format of it, I love the artwork and reading the notes. I couldnt do that with a download. For that reason if Im not sure on a band, I listen to their stuff on myspace, and then decide if I want to buy their album. Therefore, Im not cheating a band out of a sale, but I dont buy an album and end up disappointed. I know I should probably move with the times, but Im quite happy with the formats I have my movies and music on.

I am the exact same way, and I am very picky in the movies I actually watch. Even still, I have to watch a movie before I buy it, because buying a movie means I want to watch it multiple times, therefore I need to own it. Normally I would just rent the movie first and if I really like it, consider buying it. I would never buy one I haven't seen, its too much of a risk at wasting money. All I'm saying about downloading is, if they are going to be here by no fault of my own, I'm going to take advantage of it. I may be guilty by association, but I don't really care. I get to watch There Will Be Blood next week before it comes out, and I am not going to pass up that opportunity just because it is "wrong." If my roommate is going to get the movie anyway, I'll be there watching it with him. Thats how I got to watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang the other night on such short notice, because it was readily available on his computer. I only have this opportunity for another year, so I'll take advantage while I still can.

Hey, if its got you to be able to experience the brilliance that is Kiss Kiss.. then I don't have a problem with you watching your friends illegal downloads. The more that know about that movie the better!

I don't have that big a problem with illegal downloading anyway, I just prefer to own the real thing and enjoy all the benefits that come with owning them. Im more pro-dvd than anti-downloading.

I've never really seen the point in renting. The cost to rent is ridiculous. It costs me just under half the price of a dvd to rent, so I would rather just buy the thing whether I end up liking it or not. I don't spend my money on much else, and I always like finding a hidden gem which otherwise would not have even been available in the video store anyway.

Blast! You're right! I couldn't remember, but I knew Haneke is Austrian. You're right. Of course an evil and heinous movie is in German...not French. Ouch!

I still buy DVDs, lots of them. I have about 150 at this stage. The kind of films I download are ones that are just in the cinema and I'm suspicious of them. The best example is Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. It got great reviews, and I watched and was pretty nonplussed about it. I'm certainly glad I didn't pay to see it in the cinema.

But yeah, if I like a film, I will buy the official DVD. The first film I ever illegally downloaded was the 40 Year Old Virgin. I didn't expect it to be good, but loved it so much I ended up buying the DVD.

But what I meant by downloading films is actually saving money on the cinema experience. I guess it's easier to do that over here, when we get films a few weeks/months after the US.

Cache (Haneke's most famous film to date) however was in French. So was The Piano Teacher (aka The Piano Player). I remembered it was in German because the late Ulrich Muhe (of The Lives Of Others fame) played the father and mainly did German films.

I am lucky enough to have a really nice and inexpensive video store. On Tuesdays's they have rent one get one free and I can get 4 movies for just over 9 bucks. Thats less than $2.50 a movie. To buy the dvd it would be at least 5 times that amount per movie, and usually a lot more. Thats why I don't have a problem with renting.

I used to download movies every week before I started working at the movie theater. I really don't have the money to see every film I'm sort of interested in, but now I see everything for free so no more long waits on the torrent.
