I dont understand why any of these movies are popular. Musicals in a theatre have practically never been good.

I half disagree with you 'hollywood. I would say the in the 25-30 years musical film has bed a dead genre for a good reason- most have not been good enough to stand the test of time. Outside of a few exceptions, most have been bad or forgettable. But up until maybe the late 60's-early 70's musicals were a viable and profitable movie genre. It wasn't until the culture grew more postmodernly cynical and fractured that the musical became outmoded. Essentially they were made with the intention to reach out as far as its musical arms would let it. Present ones seem to be so clique based before they are even released that there is no room in the film for the masses.
There is and audience for films with music and dancing. The recent run of movies surrounding the dance floor is proof to that. The question should be can someone write a musical that a straight man will want to see with with his girl. You do that and musicals won't suck.

The only way this could happen if they added giant transforming robots to the dancefloor.
If another way of achieving what jameydunne mentioned, then whoever involved are geniuses.

Well, its pretty obvious that Hairspray is goign to kick Nancy Drew's ass now...Hairspray has such a popular cast consisting of Queen Latifah, John Travolta [in chick mode], Amanda Bynes, Zac Efron, Christopher Walken, and Brittany Snow.
