Well, i think most of us checked Mase's numbers. I have to say, i was left dumb by how well Potter did. The wizzard not only blew Bay's ultra cool robots away, but toyed with spidey and left him in the dust. Now this is a film i have to see, even if my girlfriend hates Potter and would not be caught dead watching it. Oh well, thank got for dvds:p

Now back to Potter's numbers. Mase says Potter will build up to a 76 mill. weekend, but you have to wonder: From where? I mean there is Transformers and rataouile and DH4, all of them proven to be big box-office stuff, so where will HP5 gonna find a 76 mill. weekend. I do not think transformers will drop that much (i have seen the movie, and i really do believe is a non-stop action frenzy Bay-tastic of a movie that will do particulary well with the guys who knew Optimus since the beginning).
For me, Transformers was a little too action-packed, but i do believe in the USA, with the Transformers toys since the 80's, it will go and earn more then 30 mill in the next weekend.
So, from where? I think there is a larger fan base and also, new kids that are just discovering the wizzard, so they'll take mom and dad and go see Potter.
Also, very very interesting to see which one will have more legs and run the longest.

And, i now i end the post with the estimate from Mase for HP5's wednesday: 44+ mill, all time record. GG Potter, really GG.

I don't think Transformers will make the $330M that Steve projects nor will it make the $450M that I projected.

Harry Potter is massive right now and I think Harry Pothead will win the race and even outdo Spidey.

I can only see Transformers doing $300M - $310M.

I saw HP5 last night! It was great. The 2 1/2 hours flew by...excellent.

I think the main difference between HP and the rest of this summers offerings up to now is the audiences willingness to rewatch. I can't tell you haw many people I've talked to/overheard/listened in on that were making comments similar to the following:

"When are you going to go see HP? Oh well, we're seeing it tonight but we'll go see it again with you this weekend."

These movies seem to have a certain appeal not only in seeing the movie, but in seeing it with friends, all of them, at different times if necessary. On more than one occassion I've heard of people making plans for two parties, who have already or will have already seen the movie independently of each other, making plans to see it together this weekend. The feeling of comradeship that HP fans have with each other seems to be leading to multiple viewings and therefore multiple ticket sales. This is going to be the main difference between HP and Transformers/Shrek/Pirates/DH4/Spider-man 3 (although the same type of phenomenon occurs within the comic book world, the combined negative reviews of SM3 and the fact that the key demographic that wants to rewatch comic book movies is smaller than that of HP fans gives the edge to HP5).

Anyway, I predict HP to be huge, especially until the reviews start to decline (like transformers have).

I would definitely see it again. And, all the pre-hype about it being so dark--not true at all. It is great for children and adults alike. Actually, IMO it's the best of the series so far. I was worried about the director coming from TV, but he did a fantastic job.

Then again, I didn't read the book so the true HP fans might find a few things to biotch about...

I'm right with you there Lovely, I haven't read any of the books and I really enjoy the movies, some people who have read the books though go insane about the details that aren't included in the flicks...oh well can't please everybody.

This one will make $250M easily. The question is whether it can reach the almighty $300M?

Also, those people camping in front of bookstores to pick up the latest Harry Potter.

I was thinking the same thing, but I figured that alot of people would want to see it on the first day (Wed) and then Thursday would slack before the Week-end, normal crowd watches.

Well, Potter had a great weekend... huh.
In response to the 300mil remark, only the first one did that, I dont think this one will, 290 maybe. it'll be close.
you never know, however, if the numbers hold similar to the other films, it should tickle 300mil, but should fall just short.

I think the word is going to get around that it is such a dark film and less people will want their kids to see it.

Finally saw it today, and I enjoyed it very much. I give it a 9/10, the same as Transformers, even though I would say I enjoyed HP slightly more.

Only fifteen months to go before the next chapter!!

I saw it yesterday too. I have to say I was disappointed by the end. I think it may be the best HP so far. The opening scene was excellent, the whole issue with the school beng taken over was good, and some of the set design was wonderful. But...

Every time I watch a HP movie I leave the cinema wishing something had actually happened. Every movie promises something big to happen, something that will change Harry's situation to a matter of life and death. But every film ends without anything really significant happening. For me, this film was just the same, a promise of something big, something really important happening, but in the end it just felt like an episode. I don't think this is a problet with the film, but rather a problem with the books themselves. I feel there's only really enough material for 3 parts, but it's stretched into 7.

Maybe during Christmas 2008 something will finally happen in the Harry Potter world.

True, in a way, but also, this is not about kids anymore, this is about teenagers and should be a little darker.
