I was wondering the other day was there anyone in the world who didn't like The Godfather, so thanks for clearing that one up for me, Tuan . Any particular reason why you didn't like The Godfather?

I see your point, Tuan, and I kind of agree with you. I could think of about 30 other films I'd rate above the Godfather too, but not much more. I don't think Goodfellas is better, but I can't really argue why, it's more a question of personal preference.

But yes, Number 1 in IMDB is too much (though I'd prefer that on top than the Shawshank Redemption)

Silversurfer, Lucas didn't direct Empire, Irvin Kershner did. Lucas has only directed 6 movies, THX1138, American grafitti, Star Wars, and the new trilogy.

I've really been enjoying Fellini and Truffault lately...

For Truffault, Lovely, I've only seen two. These were '400 Blows' and 'Jules and Jim.' They are both films that didn't seem to have any impact on me when I first watched them months ago, but have a quality that makes them stay with me. Both have locked themselves into my consciousness and my admiration for both has grown steadily whenever I think of them.

Different story with Fellini. I suffered through '8 1/2.' I wanted to take something from it but .... I stare fearfully at 'La Strada' now. Perhaps as it is the more conventional film I'll find a reason to try more Fellini. If not I'll stick to Kurosawa and Hitchcock.

My off the top of my head 11 (cause the last 2 were so close, and yes I've probably missed a couple) is based on body of work, rather than best single film, although I have listed my favorite film from each. In alphabetical order:

Bertolucci - The Last Emperor
Fellini - 8 1/2
Lean - Lawrence of Arabia
Herzog - Aguirre, the Wrath of God
Hitchcock - Rebecca
Kubrick - A Clockwork Orange
Kurosawa - Rashomon
Renoir - The Rules of the Game
Scorsese - Raging Bull
Spielberg - Saving Private Ryan
Woo - Hard-Boiled

This is maybe a different type of quality here, but I greatly enjoyed Steven Soderbergh's work on Ocean's Eleven (heck, Thirteen for that matter -- but Eleven moreso) and Syriana.
