Is POTC3 really disappointing? I don't think so.  XML

Pirates is in its third week and many have dismissed it as being the disappointing pick of the big three, but I'm not buying it. And I'll tell you why.

It's still at number 2 in box office after 3 weeks on the chart with a $21 mil weekend, beating out Knocked up by 2 million. Spiderman made 18mil in it's third week! In addition, POTC3 is still making 3 to 4 million per day during the week.

It's at number 3 in PTA out of the top ten even though it is being shown in the MOST theaters--500 (or @20%) more theaters than Ocean's. It's IMDB is 7.4 even after more than 40, 000 votes which means that the liklihood of the IMDB fluctuating significantly is nil. Shrek has only managed a 6.5 with 10,000 or so votes and Spidey 3 a 6.9 with, admittedly 65,000+ votes.

And finally, the POTC messageboard is still very active meaning that people are still discussing it. If it was such a bad film, I believe, that this would not be the case. Some of the posts are quite heated so people are more passionate about it then, say, Shrek.

As an aside, POTC has 872 user comments (most very good) posted VS 144 for Shrek and Shrek came out the week before.

I'm just saying...POTC could have legs and many of them. I think at the end of the day, those who have POTC3 will be very happy they chose it.

Discuss.

Sure, but it's still way behind the others in terms of BO, I can't see it making more than 300 mil at this stage. It won't beat Spidey in terms of Top 5 points. Sure, it fared better in IMDB and PTA, but considering it was the most expensive film in the game, I think it wasn't woth it. In Ultimate Pirates cost 49. Spidey cost 43, so for me it was the better option. Harry Potter is 37, which again is a better option as its likely to finish with 14-16 Top 5, about 250 milion, a 7.5 score, and a few PTA.

Overall I think Pirates was a better option than Shrek, but that's about it.

Yes it is very disappointing.

Considering Dead Man's Chest made $423M, At World's End will wound up with around $280M - $300M.

You're paying an extra $4 for an extra 0.5 in IMDB when you compare it to Spider-Man 3.

So it is disappointing.

Yes, but will Harry Potter make its full take by the end of July? It will still be competing with Transformers when it comes out as well as some pretty good counterprogramming--Licence to Wed and Chuck and Larry.

But yeah it was $12 less, so you have a point there.

Lovely, I estimate Harry P will have 14 Top 5 points by July 27, 150-200, and any PTA points it'll ever get, so it still works out better.

POTC3 so far...11 PTA, 14 Top 5, 7.4 IMDB

SM3 so far...8 PTA, 18 Top 5, 6.9 IMDB AND it's 2 weeks ahead.

POTC : PTA: 11, Top 5: 16, IMDB: 7.4, BO: 290 tops

Spidey: PTA: 9, Top 5: 18, IMDB: 6.9, BO: 330 tops

POTC: $49
Spiderman: $43

with those extra 6 dollars you could do a lot.

Believe me I'm glad I choose Spidey

Lets not forget Harry Potter still has to compete with transformers. And judging from what I've seen and heard at my theater. I think more kids want to see transformer and more adults want to see harry potter. Very Sad.

Anything over $40 really affects the flexibility of your slate -- especially as the game progresses -- but with the results for Spiderman 3 and POTC3 being so close, you have to give the nod to Spiderman 3. As said by numbersix, that extra six dollars is too valuable to pass up on.

I think Transformers will have the bigger audience because I'm defintiely sure there are much more 80s generation citizens than there are of Harry Pothead fans.

Much agreed. I hope Transformers stomps the crap out of Harry.
I also wanted pirates 3 to stomp the crap out of spidey though.

i think it did as much as could be expected. the big 3 were stupid to get so cliose to eachother. the fact is that which ever movie opened first was destined to be the biggest opener/grosser

Being the last in the room doesn't hurt either. Shrek probably had the worst placement of all the 'big' movie because there wasn't enough space for the box office numbers to do their thing. Potter will diminish some of Transformers business simply because it will be the newest of the majors still left in August, a month notorious for weak releases.

Someone took the time to post this but i forgot the numbers- what is the highest grossing Pixar film? I think it is Toy Story, but I don't know how much.

Actually, jameydunne, Toy Story ranks as only #6 out of the 7 Pixar films so far. Here is how they've all done, and where they rank on the all-time Box Office list:

#14. Finding Nemo, $339.7M
#35. The Incredibles, $261.4M
#38. Monsters, Inc., $255.9M
#43. Toy Story 2, $245.8M
#44. Cars, $244.1M
#83. Toy Story, $191.8M
#131. A Bug's Life, $162.8M
