Transformers was the best movie I had seen at the theaters all summer long. I saw Bourne at midnight on Thursday and it blew Transformers and every other movie this summer out of the water. Go See Bourne!

I'm kind of confused by Knocked Up and Reno 911 as top 10 movies... I mean reno 911.. really? We are past the halfway point of the year and that is the BEST of what has come out in theatres?
Sure Knocked Up was good, but I'm not entirely understanding of why everyone is raving about it... I thought it was on the same level as Catch and Release.
Either way, it is a testament to the lack of good movies that were made broadly available this year.

Catch and Release was a horrible movie, Knocked Up is excellent

Superbad will probably not be a good movie, but will make boatloads of cash because of Apatow and Rogen.

Also, by the way, Superbad is Rogen's first screenplay project; I don't see how there's a history of "writing awesome movies." (Okay, and he wrote for Undeclared and Da Ali G Show.) He does have two of his own screenplays (The Pineapple Express and Drillbit Taylor) scheduled for release next year. And he has been a producer on a bunch of films, so maybe that's what you're thinking of.

But why is it excellent is what I'm asking...
Catch and Release had the same dragging on romantic comedy of errors thing going on and was carried by performances from Kevin Smith and Tim Olyphant (I think this was really a breakout for him, can't wait to see how he does in Hitman, since he has shown such range this year in his roles). In Knocked Up, I thought Katherine Heigl and Paul Rudd carried a movie that would have otherwise been barely passable.
I keep hearing how great and ground breaking it was, yet I just don't see it.

I knew I should have kept my yap shut...

Okay, guys, you've asked, and here are the answers:

I loved FF2 because, quite simply, it game me all I wanted in a comic book movie. Just like the first Fantastic Four, it didn't try to weigh itself down with heavy emotions (Spider-Man), it didn't have too many characters to keep track of (X-Men), and it wasn't just balls-out lame (Superman Returns). It had exactly the right mix of camp, humor, and action, not to mention a pretty cool "villain". The moment at the end where Sue sacrifices herself to save the surfer was very poignant, and even though I knew she wouldn't really die, I still liked it very much. And for those of you who go on about how bad the acting was... IT'S A COMIC BOOK MOVIE! It's not Shakespeare! I don't go in expecting Oscar-caliber performances... and anyone who goes into a comic-book movie expecting that will be sorely disappointed. I hope that satisfies your curiosity.

As for Evan Almighty, I am also not one to subscribe to the notion that just because the movie bombed, I am therefore required to hate it. Yes, the production was over-inflated, needlessly so, and the fact that it was almost pre-destined to fail saddens me. But I still found the movie funny as hell, exactly as I found Bruce Almighty to be. Steve Carell did a fine job, and Morgan Freeman was his usual cool-ass self.

At the end of the day, I rank movies based on how much they make me want to see them again. That's all. My ranking system goes like this:

10 - One of my all-time favorites, will buy the DVD
9 - Great movie, will rent it, may buy DVD
8 - Very good movie, will rent it, won't buy it
7 - Good movie, probably won't rent it, may look for it on cable
6 - Decent movie, might look for it on cable
5 - Okay movie, enjoyed it but won't go out of my way to see it again
4 - Below average movie, but not a total failure
3 - Disappointing movie, with maybe one or two good spots
2 - Bad movie, a total waste of time
1 - Godawful movie, will lobby to have every copy burned

And I ranked Harry Potter over Transformers because the substance-over-style ratio was slightly higher. But they are both 9/10. (And I've seen 41 movies this year and counting.)

I like what I like, and I stand by my decisions. I expect all of you to do the same. You could tell me that your Top 5 of the year includes Bratz, Who's Your Caddy, I Know Who Killed Me and Daddy Day Camp and I won't give you flak about it (in public, anyway). And I don't think I need to point out that everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY, has really bad movies that they just love.

Peace.

Well put, its just a bit surprising that those particular picks fall in your top 10 for the year.. there is a difference between considering a movie likeable/enjoyable and considering it in your top 10.

You have to be in Matt Damons fan club. Otherwise there is no effing way you would think that The Bourne Ultimatum is better than Transformers. Live Free or Die Hard was much better than Bourne. It was a good movie and probably one of the best action films so far this year. But I actually got a headache trying to keep up with the frickin camera jumping around everywhere. I heard they did all the action scenes with a handheld camcorder. This was a bad Idea. Live Free and Transfromers. Much Much better action movies.
If your a regular movie goer Then I recommend going to see this. If you only go every few weeks then you definatley need to wait for dvd and save your money for a much better movie. Like Transformers when it goes to the discount theaters. Even If you've already seen it.
I liked bourne. Matt Damon is great. But I'm not sure if I'd rank this in my top ten. Maybe top twenty. Maybe.

By the way. Also watched Underdog last night.(I get in free nothing better to do). It was a lot better than I thougt. A lot more like the show that I used to watch than I thought. Still could've been better. I can see this being a really good family comedy. I enjoyed it. Probably won't ever see it again unless it comes on satellite and nothing else is on.

Thanks, becs. Tell you what... when the year is a little more close to ending, I'll put up two different Top 10s... one being my favorite 10 movies of the year, and the other being what I thought were the 10 best movies of the year (which is to say, the ten that are most deserving of awards, for whatever reason).

Deal?
