Oh yes, I know this is the debate you've all been itching to delve into. I have Nancy on my slate, hoping it'll nab a few Top 5 points. But then again, Hairspray could appeal to the same audience and more.

One's a predominantly girl's adventure, the other a musical. Both of which I despise. But which will do better at the box office. Nancy won't get boys or men, so that's a lot of the market out. Hairspray may get both girls and women. It's a tough call, as both are 11 in Ultimate. What's everyone's thoughts?

Hairspray for sure. Travolta in a fat suit. It will no doubt be hilarious like his 'craplousy' performance in Battlefield Earth.

my big concern is that Hairspray will get an awful IMDB score. Travolta in a fat suit just begs hatred

Have my doubts about either of those movies. I think Hairspray will struggle to find an audience, as musicals have been hit or miss. Nancy might be too tongue and cheek for it's own good, PG rated girl power kiddie friendly movies have not done so well; New York Minute, Just My Luck, Raise Your Voice, whatever the name of the Duff Sister movie that come out last year (I like to call Duff Fluff).
If we're talking ultimate, and those are my only two choices, I gotta go with Ms. Drew, kids movies (generally) have better legs (in this case, both figuratively and literally, Have you seen John Travolta in a dress lately, with or without a fatsuit?)

And, in the May-July season, Hairspray only has two weeks on the market before the game ends, so I second the notion of Nancy Drew.

Oh, and you were thinking of Material Girls, which somehow failed to get the Madonna song on the soundtrack. Probably forgot the title because it was overshadowed by one Snakes on a Plane coming out the same weekend.

I never thought I'd be saying this in my lifetime, but John Travolta is no Divine.

In addition to the time factor, Nancy Drew is a better choice for another reason... people going to see Hairspray may like it, they may hate it. Whereas people who actually go see Nancy Drew will probably be part of the target audience. Those who would probably not like Nancy Drew won't go see it (or rate it) to begin with.

Nancy Drew for sure it will defintley do better than Hairspray.Hairspray will be a bomb because it has a small audience and Nancy Drew has a bigger audience so it should do better.

As we are in a couple of leagues together I leave it to you to decide how much weight my opinion should carry!

'Hairspray' has stiff competition from at least three other films in its opening weekend and may well exit the top 5 in its second weekend. My guess is three top 5 points total.

'Nancy Drew' is a wildcard and I don't know what the tracking is like for it yet. In this case I resort to 'Nancy Drew' simply having more weeks available to garner box office dollars. It might survive the impact of 'Die Hard,' benefit from 'Transformers' scaring away competition on the long weekend and steal the three top 5 points you (and I) want it to gain in order to outpace 'Hairspray.'

Pragmatically speaking, I believe that 'Nancy Drew' is the safer bet. As we both have it though, I heavily encourage you to pick up 'Hairspray' instead, *lol*

I've seen some promotion for 'Nancy Drew' but not too much. I've seen quite a bit of promotion for 'Hairspray' already. Hmmm...

I'd definitely say Hairspray although I will say don't count Nancy Drew out, it will likely make anywhere from $40 million to double that

If "Hair Spray" were coming out the end of the year and not the summer, it'd be a better bargain. This thing could definitely benefit from a platform release (which fellow-musical "Dreamgirls" utilized) to garner praise from the metro areas most of John Waters' fans are. That way, maybe you can convince some suburbanites and rural areas that it's a decent film. If it goes any wider than 600 theaters the 1st week, it's D.O.A.

"Nancy Drew" should do well in the fact that there's not much out there for young girls. This looks like it could also draw in other crowds, but it's main competition looks like the PG-13 "Fantastic Four 2", PG-"Evan Almighty" and G-"Ratatouille". It won't finish first in top 5, but could get a few (3-5) as decent counterprogramming. It seems like almost every year there's a film that quietly succeeds ("Mean Girls", "Sisterhood of Traveling Pants"), this could be this year's. Bet your money on the Roberts family.

Hairspray definitly is a wild card, but I tend to think that Hairspray could be a surprise hit. Early reactions towards the first images shown were very, very postive, and if you forget the low key Lonely Hearts, Wild Hogs kind of put Travolta's back in the game. So if you add Queen Latifah, Pfeiffer's comeback, and popular teen actors, I think you've got a sleeper hit here.
Of course for the may/july, it's short, but in a june/august league, I think it could be worth it.

Hebchill, take all predictions and reduce them by 10-20% and you'll be happy.

Considering the underperformance of Surfs Up, Nancy has a chance of hitting third place this week, so I've decided to keep it

Don't discount the strong retro appeal of Nancy Drew. My sisters and I read the books back in the '80s, and we can't wait to see the movie.
