Wow. I'm surprised I took Iron Man from as far back as January. I also have Narnia 2 too though. Anyways, that list isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Sex and the City is getting good hype. Great show delfinasu!

6. the winner announced on 03.01.2009 - is the mogul with the highest total box office.

Last year, we had 28 movies surpassing the $100 M mark, also 11 more than $200 M and 4 more than $300 M. Do you think that these numbers can be beaten this year? We have just 4 movies until now with more than $100 M. Last year at same date, we had 7 movies (remember: 300, Wild Hogs, Blades of Glory, Ghost Rider and the three-quels: Spidey, Shrek and Pirates... ?)

On the first week of June I'll post some statistics: who's on top for the moment, who's on bottom, who has chances and who doesn't anymore... So... keep close

I'll come back also with a 2007 movies analysis

Yeah, the person with the biggest BO will win, or if there's a tie, it's the one who has the right order.

Oh and as a reminder, I'll be mailing the winner a Region 2 DVD of Oldboy (I've two copies- I bought it and was given the Vengeance Trilogy box set to review).

Sex and the City was a truly shocker 4 me... $56,848,056 on its OW !!! I think that all of us had underestimated it... The optimistic ones thought at 30-40 MM USD. This movie can achieve 130-150 MM USD...

Meanwhile:
Iron Man - $276,166,336 until now and still can surpass 300 mark;
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - $215,635,899 - min. 310-320 MM USD, max. 340-350;
Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! - $152,571,420, no more than 153-154 MM USD
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - $115,362,725 - less lower than Narnia 1, still can achieve 145-150 MM USD...

This weekend: Kung Fu Panda (9 betters) and You don't mess with the Zohan (2 betters) will be released... I dream of 60-70 MM USD 4 Panda and 30-40 MM USD 4 Zohan. Che sera, sera...

Great! More mogul fever!

Im hope this Super Contest will happen but like most bright idea's presented here in the message boards, none get picked up.

And now that ive read thru the other threads ive released how late i am, HA!

BUT-Im one for perfecting this Super Contest until the FM editors decide its good enought to include it in the site as an actual game.

Some ideas are:

-Extending the list of movies in year to 12 or 15 to make the lists more variable and adding difficulty.
-Including 2/3 options such as limited movie changes (to cater for changed release dates, new releases, but also to make you pick wisely at the start of the competition)
-Mini game where you choose who has most weekend rankings (top5's)
-to decide for a tie, the user must choose one film and estimate its final total domestic gross
-Perhaps letting you choose just 5-6 movies for a half year to let release dates settle in the other end of the year, so you choose them after half a season

You could go on and on with perfecting rules but some of these seem feasible...now for my list

1. The Dark Night
2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Meth
3. Harry Potter and the Half Drunk Prince
4. Wall St
5. Quantum of Trevelyen
6. Steel Man
7. Tropical Lightning
8. Something coming out in November/December
9. Get Dumb
10. Narnia: Tale of Loss
11. Hulk: The Norton Version
12. Kung Poo Bear

@Ron_Burgundy: welcome, but you are a little late... Your proposals will be discussed at the end of the year to improve this kind of contest for the next year tournament... thank you for the feedback and stay close

As I promised, more statistics. Let's see who has little chances to win, because of some uninspired choices:
- first of all, we have 8 moguls who have chosen Star Trek, unfortunatelly... - Thomassi87, Nicodemus, SuperShaan, BrentBaines, J.I., Shryke42, Chienfantome, AzureWolf;
- transformers2 with The Hottie and The Nottie has acquired only $0.027696 M;
- Rambo with only $42.75 M, was chosen only by StnMan5... not enough to be on top 10 of the year;
- Speed Racer was the most disappointment movie of the year, in terms of Box Office, only $40.68 M until now, and will not surpass $50 M; it was chosen by Nicodemus and StnMan5;
- Cloverfield was supposed to be the first blockbuster of the year, cronologically speaking, but with only $80.05 M can't be in top 10... was chosen by 7 moguls: StnMan5, pulpclub, becs, Shryke42, Lili, BarcaRulz, undeadmonkey...
- The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian has $115.36 M after 10 days, not even close of Narnia 1... and I don't know if this can surpass even $150 M after its total/ final run...

I think that Iron Man and Indiana Jones 4 will surpass the 300 mark, and after Horton, Sex and the City can surpass $150 M too... we'll see after this weekend how many chances it will have to accomplish that...

Let's wait for the numbers of Kung Fu Panda and Zohan after their OW ($60 M, respectively $40 M estimated), but I don't think that Zohan will have a chance to be in top 10 of the year... Sorry, Shryke42 and Lili...

Looking back at January 2008, yes, it was a very hard job to choose only 10 movies. This was/ is funnier and harder than I thought it would be... And I think it would be much much harder for 2009, just looking at the upcoming movie titles of the next year...

Until then, let's see who's on top until now:

- the only two moguls who have chosen Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Iron Man, Sex and the City: The Movie and Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! are:
geezer9687 and JackO. They have many many chances to be on Top at the end of this contest...
- after 10 movies just released (including Star Trek, sorry folks! and NOT including Panda and Zohan) we have on top:
1. StnMan5 - 921.34
2. becs - 837.91
3-4. geezer9687, JackO - 814.90
millions of dollars, of course, in total, right now (Jun 1st updated);
- if we're looking at the average, the top is a little different:
1-2 annyonggob888, delfinasu - 202.39 (with 3 movies)
3-4. jas_8382, cRAzY - 189.47 (average of 4 movies)
5. numbersix_99 - 182.95 (3 movies)
- at the bottom of the standings, depending of the average of the movies, we have our dearest:
- Shryke42 - 102.76
- Nicodemus - 104.48
- Chienfantome - 110.33
- StnMan5 - 131.62
- BrentBaines - 132.84
- transformers2 - 132.85
- Lili - 137.02
- BarcaRulz - 137.02
- BanksIsDaFuture - 149.82

I see great names. This is kind of surprise... BUT we are not even at the half of the contest, so anything is possible...
This month 6 of our movies will be released, so I'll come back at the beginning of the July with more statistics... I think that the standings will be changed a little bit...

Do you think NOW that The Incredible Hulk, a movie NOT chosen by anyone of us, can be a surprise-hit, and will surpass Sex and the City numbers? Chienfantome and undeadmonkey have chosen The Happening instead. We'll see next week

NO ONE chose The Incredible Hulk? Dude, it will open to around $60 million and could easily pull in $150 million. But two people chose the Happening, which will open to around $25 million and have very bad word of mouth? Wow.

And delfinasu, its WAY too early to start giving us those statistics. Its only the first week of June. We have the whole summer left and the holidays. The standings will change drasticly during the course of the summer.

J.I., I agree with you... Incredible Hulk can be a surprise-hit, but I doubt that it will surpass $150 M. Let's see what others are thinking?

As of standings... I doubt that the moguls who are right now at the bottom of the standings (last 10), depending of the average of the movies ($100-150 M, CAN be on top at the end of the contest... we'll see... how the standings are changing from month to month...

Anything is still possible...there are still 20 movies to be released.. so until the end of July, we can't make a very good idea of who has still chances to win or to loose... BUT at the beginning of December, when most of us will have 8-9 or even 10 movies released, we'll know who can be among the favorites to win this super-contest...

In my defense, back in january nobody knew what The Happening was about, and I still give shaymanana a benefit of a doubt, also i bet it will beat Speed Racer. Its a better pick than Star Trek, for this year anyway.

As for the Hulk, it can pass 150M,

I think the Incredible Hulk can and will pass 150 million, but since no one took it here, it becomes completely irrelevant to the game. We don't need the top 10 grossing movies of the year, just the best possible Box Office from ten movies, compared to our competitors. I'm glad I have no bombs on my slate yet and I avoided Star Trek. Everyone basically had Narnia so that cancels even though it didnt live up to expectations. Mase is calling for over 200 million on Kung Fu Panda, so I am liking my chances.

I think some people chose the Hulk. Well, i'm not sure about SOME people, but i know 100% that i put it at number 9. I just checked that as well.

That is true, I think two people actually did take it delfinasu. Better go back and check that for yourself. Barca definitely did, he is right.

It's a good thing too, i need it. I was dumb enough to not only choose Cloverfield, but to choose it instead of Iron Man..
