You guys are really trying to confuse the hell out of me... LOL Again your distinction "Best" and "Favorite"... tssssss... lol So yeah, you're probably right, I'm not gonna like your list

I think for me, the difference is this: I admire the technique and craftsmanship of "A Clockwork Orange," I acknowledge and respect its greatness, and I would eat my own vomit before ever watching it again.

"Best" list, sure. "Favorite" list, no chance.

I don't understand the best and favorites difference either. Sure, I can understand the distinction for a pure concept movie like the 5 Obstructions being that way, but No Country? An Academy Award winner? A Clockwork Orange? Based off one of the best books made in the history of mankind? I don't know. Maybe it's because I grew up watching the Sundance Channel and IFC. Hell, I think the more diverse choices the better. I would be more then happy to see a list that features both Harold and Kumar and My Left Foot. Maybe I should start making a list . . . .

JackO I think you will like my list. I think I have a pretty good mix in there. I have some really stupid movies but also some really top notch Oscar winning movies as well. Stay tuned!

I think you may be missing my point. The fact that you're calling A Clockwork Orange one of the best books ever implies that you enjoyed it. And you're welcome to that opinion.

My point was that there's a difference between acknowledging importance and actually liking. It's like Time Magazine's "Person of the Year." They can name Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Ayatollah Khomeini as being important and influential, but that doesn't mean they like them.

You have to think of it like music. No one is disputing that Mozart, Beethoven, or Chopin's music is a masterpiece, some of the BEST music ever written. But if you go to a persons house and find out what they are actually listening to, for the most part, no one has a single cd or mp3 of their work... because based on an invividual's likes and dislikes their FAVORITE may be U2, or My Chemical Romance, or Phil Collins, or even Shania Twain.

I don't think we shoudl distinguish between what think is great and what we think is enjoyable.

That would just mean we're buying into the pretension of cinema. If you think Citizen Kane is a great film but you don't enjoy it... then you don't think it's a great film. Just be honest about it. I don't see a point of having two lists... films I enjoy... and then films I think are great just because Sight and Sound etc says so.

You're right Becs, film is quite like music, it';s all about taste. I think there's more ground for arguing your side with cinema, as it's based on a story and a narrative, but I'm not going to say Mozart wrote masterpieces. I don't care what others say. It doesn't appeal to me. You can get as technical as you want but it doesn't matter, as that music doesn't fit my criteria as to what makes music good.

I think the biggest issue is rewatchability. I just watched There Will Be Blood a few days ago. I thought it was a terrific movie, awesome character study, incredible conflict and absolutely pristine acting and cinemetography. Technically, it was everything PT Anderson could have hoped to achieve from a film-making standpoint. But I am not going to want to sit down and watch it over and over. That was really the determining factor in my list, and there are a lot of films that are great from a technical standpoint that are on it, because I do want to watch them over and over. But yes, I can apreciate a film but not want to run out and buy the dvd or watch it again and again. The films on my list are the films that I could watch all the time no matter how many times I've seen them. And the further the film is up the list, the more I'd rather watch that film than any other behind it.

Geez, an interesting list so far, and some films which would probably make my worst 100 movies, but hey, that's why we are doing these lists: to find our own personal favourites!

Regarding A Christmas Story, I think this movie is loved mainly by Americans, as they have grown up on it. Its one of those movies which just are not shown very often outside the US. I first watched it when I was 13, and fell in love with it. So it doesn't matter what age you see the movie, which I think Donte presumed, A Christmas Story is just a classic analogy of a typical family with all their flaws and quirks. I watch it every year now that I have the DVD and it never ages! And I want a leg lamp!

As for Eternal Sunshine, it is a very good movie, but I prefer Gondry's other movie Science of Sleep, which in a year or so may make my top 100 list. Wayne's World is a classic and it was hard to leave off my list, and I hope you include X-Men 2 as well, as that was a much better movie than the first one.

One thing though, nice concept, but I hate the idea of five films a day, its just too agonising to wait that long!! You like the keep the anticipation high eh!

Thats exactly right, and trust me, there are worse movies to come. I love seeing the reactions. I would never say "oh my god how can you not like this movie?" I know people have very different tastes and thats totally cool.
So it doesn't matter what age you see the movie, which I think Donte presumed

He was actually referring to Mission Impossible 2, as I saw that when I was young and really drawn to the action sequences. He was just saying that you can see a movie as a child or teenager and love it so much that it sticks on your favorite list as you grow older, and I think that is pretty accurate.

I haven't seen the Science of sleep, nor have I even heard of it. Wayne's World is a classic but I actually think Wayne's world 2 is the better of them, its coming soon. I have to apologize Surfer, but I liked the original X-Men better than the second. I just thought the story gripped me better. Once again, personal preference. So I will not keep you waiting to see where it falls, because it is not there. To keep you guessing on that would be just plain mean.

One thing though, nice concept, but I hate the idea of five films a day, its just too agonising to wait that long!! You like the keep the anticipation high eh!

Hey it was that agonizing to actually put the list together. So I might as well get some real use out of it. The way I see it, this way people can react to each individual film as I release them, rather than the list as a whole. It creates more discussion that way. If I only give people 5 a day, then people can focus in on those 5, and actually look forward to the next day when they get the next 5. That is if anyone actually cares. But I think the reaction so far has been positive so I'm going to keep slowly rolling them out. Like I have been saying, stay tuned!

Numbersix, my favorite Irishman, you speak the truth, as often. You spell out the words I was not able to find in English as to why I don't get the concept of making a distinction of "Best Films" and "Favorite Films".

...but wouldn't you admit that there's at least a few "good" movies that you personally don't like?

i mean, film appreciation isn't ALL objective.. if it was, i think it'd be pretty boring

Thats exactly what I meant Geez. If a movie makes an impression on you as a kid and you loved it then but hate it now it means you have lost your inner child.

I do have to say that I thought "The Science of Sleep" was ok. I thought it was good but not great.

Keep em coming Geez.
