Thank you, numbersix99 for your articulate discussion of the film. That's what I was wanting, not some mud being thrown at a movie that has good intentions with poor execution.
I just felt like I had to play the devil's advocate when someone was lambasting the film without much justification. Of course, I love opinions, but I don't know opinions should include so many four-letter words. But, that's just me, the reader.
Mud? It was my feeling's on the movie.
How am I not justified? Because I didn't cite precedent on Haneke (never seen any of his movies before) or examples of what the movie should've been (can't think of any)?
Four letter words? What are you, fucking 12? Are you going to tell on me now? I could've sworn we were all adults here....

Just don't really enjoy reading swear words. Really, is that "adult"?

Frisky, Six and Banks: I have really enjoyed reading your opinions and comments on this movie, thanks for posting them. I like finding out people's views on a movie and I like the "simplistic" (no offence intended - if you ever read any of my reviews on Facebook that's my own style of review) "it was crap" or "it was good" just as much as the critical technical "film student" style. I think they are equally valid. I just wish I had seen the movie so I could contibute. Unfortunately Banks I don't think your objective has been achieved. Your comments, and the resulting discussion (I don't think of it as a debate or argument) have only intrigued me and increaased my desire to see the film, similar to the effect it has had oncRAzY. But that's probably the way it should be, and thanks for the warning anyway. At least I can go into it knowing I have been forewarned.

I've a good suggestion Leestu, just wait until Funny Games comes out on a torrent site and download it. At least you'll save money that way.
I started doing this at the beginning of the year, and I am delighted to have not paid for so many mediocre movies (Youth Without Youth [sorry Chien], Before the Devil Knows..., Wristcutters, Gone Baby Gone, etc). It's actually made me less annoyed with the film industry, as at least I'm not wasting money on crap.
I still go to the cinema regularly, but now I save it for films I think I may like, such as No Country, and There Will be Blood, and it usually pans out.

I am not sure if my computer is good enough. I am not computer literate enough to even know how to do it. I don't think i could watch a movie on my computer. My chair is so uncomfortable. I must invest in a decent computer chair. But thanks for the suggestion anyway Six. If it wasn't for the 3 points above it would probably be a great idea.

This is how I get most of my movies currently. I don't download them, but my roommate gets everything. It is quite convenient. He already has Run, Fat Boy, Run but I have yet to watch it. I need to say though 6, I thought Gone Baby Gone was anything but a mediocre movie, I thought it was amazing.

I really couldn't download and watch a movie. Firstly because its WRONG, and secondly why would anyone want to watch a film on a computer? It completely defies my reasoning for watching movies in the first place. Sitting at a computer watching a movies is an isolated, uncomfortable and unemotional way to watch a movie. When I watch a movie, I want to get right into it. I wanna relax, sit back and watch the movie in all its widescreen capabilities. Watching a movie on a 15' screen would not do it for me.
I could not watch Transformers on a computer, the awesomness of that movie would be completely lost on a small screen with crappy speakers. I could not watch Boys Don't Cry on a computer, it is a movie which pulls you in and makes you literally cry. I could not get into that emotional state on a computer.
Dont get me wrong, I use the computer to watch trailers and things on youtube, but for movies I wanna be in my most optimal and comfortable space. That would either be down the local cinema, or watching it on a dvd with a proper tv and decent speakers. A small, grainy picture just doesn't do it for me.

SS face the fact that 42" lcd monitors with better picture than your tv are where things are going with computers.. I'm ot sure what hole you live in, but myself and most of my friends have surround sound on our *computers* for gaming, and not our tvs.. a computer screen has no reason to be small/grainy or any lower quality than your tv, unless you made the decision not to invest in current technology for your computer but have kept up with your tv... thats really not the norm these days though, for most people the tv is sitting not getting updated for a decade while the computer gets upgrades every few months to year.

Well if you have a 42" LCD moniter with surround sound connected to your computer, I'm sure that it's takiing the place of your tv too. Especially if you can connect your Cable/Satellite to it, and if it has a dvd player. I'm sure you dont sit three feet away from it as with a regular 15'' computer screen.

I agree with becs, my roommate's computer is pretty damn good, especial with the sound. But we don't usually watch them om the computer. We burn them to a re-writable dvd and watch them on the tv. But its not like we have a big screen LCD tv either, we're college students, we can't exactly afford that for our dorm room. I personally never download movies, but when I live with someone who is going to do it anyway, I'm taking advantage of it. If the movie is good, I will buy it for my own personal collection. Its like a free netflix as far as i'm concerned.

wow, a 42" screen!!! I only have my laptop, and do not see that as something I want to watch movies on. Also, like UDM said, do you watch your movies on your monitor at a normal distance, in a chair? Or is it in place of your tv? Because that is not my idea of getting into a mood to watch a movie.
To be honest, If Im still living in the dark ages, so be it. But I quite enjoy sitting back on my sofa, with my friends able to sit alongside me, and we watch our dvds via a tv with surround sound. I just can't see us all cramming around a computer screen in my back room, even if it was a 42" lcd screen.
edit: Ah, I hadn't thought about that geez, I suppose downloading and transferring to disc still enables you to watch a movie in a satisfactory environment. Still, I like the real deal with extras and all, and I read reviews before I buy a dvd, so I will usually end up liking the movie I buy.

So just to be clear here, I'm just talking about watching movies in general, not doing so via download or streaming... As an intellectual I think the lack of availability is a bit silly, but as an even mildly intelligent supporter of the arts, I think its worth recognizing that the artists (whether they be in the film industry, musicians, or painters) deserve to make money off of their work. As I've brought up before, I am all for free online media (hence my plugging of Hulu.com) but in a legal and high quality manner that doesn't debase the work itself simply to make it available to more people.
(End PSA)
My computer setup is a little more extravagant than my living room entertainment center, but the main reason I watch movies on my computer more is the fact that i don't want to/can't stop multi-tasking. So that being said, yes, I watch most movies truly at and actively on my computer while using it to do other things as well. I can understand the stance of wanting the relaxing environment (oi, i never relax), and I do follow that for some movies - ones actually warranting the environment. Just this morning I got up early (I don't work fridays so early was about 8:30), made a massive mug of Chai, and curled up with a blankie on my LoveSac (http://www.lovesac.com/ they are SO worth the money) in front of the tv and watched Brick.. which was a freakin great movie and definitely worth the time spent focused wholly on it.

Looks like a big bean bag to me!! Also, I like the look of the Lovesac theatre, now similarly to the other thread regarding watching a movie in luxury, that does look like a nice way to watch a film!!

Yea yea... its not a beanbag at all. Mainly because its filled with little puffy balls, about the size of a ping pong ball, of posturpedic foam, no beans here. Its extremely extremely comfortable.

For anyone that hasn't seen FUNNY GAMES and is interested in seeing it, I'd highly recommend the 1997 version over the 2008 version. The 1997 version is now available on DVD and is the same thing, shot-for-shot, as the 2008 version, except it's in French rather than English and not with Naomi Watts. In my opinion, the two boys in the 1997 version are superior to Brady Corbet & Michael Pitt in the 2008 version.
