...[C]all me naive, but I am not letting myself believe that human beings are fundamentaly evil. If I believed that, I'd have to kill myself.
Awww, don't do that... Let US kill you. [Chuckling darkly and rubbing hands together]

Geez, in most movies, when a person dies, there is usually a purpose to it. Whether their wife cheated on them, they killed someone cause they were nervous with an itchy trigger finger, or someone slighted them, etc., they are killing with a purpose. Whether the victim is innocent or not there is purpose. When you kill an animal, there is no purpose. It is needless. That is pure evil. Also, when people die, a person can defend themselves. They know what is going on and can do something about it. Dogs don't even know what is going on. It is the same way with children getting hurt. That's what I compared it to in an above post. Both are defenseless. I have the same reaction when a child is hurt. And I am not saying I'm not sad when a human gets murdered, especially innocent victims. How could I not?! When they implied Bardem killed Brolen's wife in No Country, that go me pretty upset. All I was saying was that I get especially upset in films when pets or children are killed. It's just the way I feel. I can't help it.

And come on geez. It is a little funny

I probobly gonna drop this subject now because this is getting way to deep, and I like to think of myself as a cheerful, happy person. And this topic is making me sad. I'm a sad panda...

Calypso says: don't hurt da fuzzies or I start bitin' da toes!

Ultimately, no I am not vegetarian. I do tend toward "organic" meats knowing that for the most part the animals involved were treated more humanely than those that aren't stamped as organic. We as humans are Omnivores for a reason, no matter how we try to supplement a normal diet with plant proteins, it simply won't meet the needs our body has - it will keep us alive, but it will open your body up to a host of problems you wouldn't otherwise have... but then so does eating meat that is chemically enhanced, so pick your poison.

As I said in the original post, the "kill" itself isn't what bothers me.. its the circle of life, etc, so its natural for it to happen and the death of one animal to feed another, even if that animal is a human. Its the depiction in movies of animals being treated with such extreme malice. I actually *did* get physically sick the first time I saw Butterfly Effect, its a very good movie, and I actually own it now, but it does devastate me to watch certain parts which you all well are familiar with I'm sure. If they made a movie of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, I'm sure I would watch it and be further enlightened, but it would just trigger that gut wrenching reaction that we are talking about here.. humans simply don't do that to me in movies.

[Relenting] Okay, okay, apologies. Sheesh. I mean, come on: Why so serious?

I get the point. However, I insist that some -- perhaps not as much, as a percentile, but more than zero, certainly -- killings of humans are also needless / pointless / indefensible.

Some folks really, really need to read James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small. Or, like, see the movie or something.

Dogs don't even know what is going on.
A nice thought, mooreland, but I volunteered one summer at an animal shelter, and I know better.

I hear ya.

9/11 really, really, really pissed me off.

Me, too.

It's called compassion. Don't apologize for it.

My point.

You missed one. Not one of the options you have up there bothers me in the slightest, as far as I'm concerned humanity in general is deplorable and deserves every bit of bad they get (even children, because someday they will grow up and be adults be be just as horrible)... to put it simple humanity is inhumane.

Wow, someone has daddy issues.

Anyway, to the bolded, doesn't that make inhumanity human? Thus making it inevitable and then, acceptable (because if you can't accept the inevitable, you are indeed in denial)?

So, basically, anything inhumane is acceptable. Especially if you can accept kids being hurt instead of animals.

Anyway, my least favorite scenes are any that include totally innocent people getting hurt. I can watch the most terrible things, as long as the victim is somehow at fault and/or deserves it.

Alpha Dog was a very hard movie for me to watch, and it kills me that it actually happened.

Sorry you've had a bad week geez. I hope everything is okay. Well, obviously everything isn't okay or you wouldn't be having a bad week. Time makes all things better. Just think happy thoughts, and just fly away. Or do hardcore drugs, that makes you fly away too...in you mind...

We all know what the pixie dust from Peter Pan really was.

Just go to youtube and watch that video of the monkey sniffing his but and falling out of the tree. Actually, you should check out this fake add for an energy drink called Powerthirst!!! It is absolutly hilarious. But click on Powerthirst II, not Powerthirst I. The first one isn't nearly as funny.

Lalalalalalala...

"Don't worry, about a thing, cause every little thing, is gonna be alright."

Just imagining it being sung with a Jamaican voice. It is quite comforting. I've always liked that song. I saw Dave Matthews perform that at the show they held at Virginia Tech after the shootings. John Mayer, some country star (?Vince Gil?), and Nas came out and sang with him. Nas certainly did look a bit out of place, though.

I am rambling now. It is late. I am going to bed.

Polonium-210?

Just go to youtube and watch that video of the monkey sniffing his but and falling out of the tree.
Or, click on FOX News Channel and watch the primary coverage. Basically the same thing.

I Am Legend flashback... Damn that movie, it ruined a great song for me.

Are you a Hokie, mooreland? I can't remember... One of my best friends, my oldest friend in fact, is a graduate of VaTech, and was in that very building, guest lecturing, the day before the shootings... He called me up a couple days later and was, like: "I bet some of the kids I met got killed that day."

I love the VaTech campus, the chemistry building in the shape of the Periodic Table, the rolling hills, the similarities between it and my alma mater, Texas A&M. A God-damned shame, what happened there.

When I was reading the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about what scenes bugged you in a specific movie. And by bugged, I thought scenes that ruined a movie for you.

But child violence makes me upset. Whether its kid on kid, or an adult abusing one, its disturbing. Some filmmakers are smart enough to hint at it, without showing, but some believe "more is more".

Yes, I do actually eat tofu, and like it. I think it is great for our bodies to get heavy plant proteins (Tofu, soy beans, freshly ground peanut butter) just as much as it is to get fresh meat. Its all about knowing and applying the appropriate balance.

Regarding Lord of the Flies, I have only seen the 1960s version, but I agree, it is a deeply affecting film... however, again, despite the twisted nature of it, the movie just doesn't kick off that instinctual response, at parts it makes me disgusted, outraged, sick even, but not in the same way as the scenes I mentioned before.

I picked rape,

I don't know why, but I think the act is one of the most despicable ever. Maybe because murder involves death, which at least is a peace (unelss you believe in hell). But rape is an assault that lasts, mostly for someone's life.

I can't quite understand why it bothers me so much. Perhaps it's because its a heinous perversion of something that most of us consider to be good, natural, and even beautiful.

Some of the worst scenes in films about that are A Clockwork Orange, the rape episode in The Sopranos, and Touch of Evil, where the "rape" scene is only really hinted at. There's also Irreversible, which I hated as a film, but has a 15-minute scene that made me sick to my stomach.

I never really answered the question, i also picked rape, as its the most dispicable thing that i believe a human being can do. Anyone that would ever do that no longer has the right to keep their dick. Fuck cruel and unusual punishment laws, if you are convicted of rape, they cut it off. You lose your priveledge. I've had a very good friend of mine call me up at 5 in the morning crying because it happened to her. And its not something thats easy to help. The stigma is unbearable. Its just the purest form of human evil. I feel this way about any guy that would hit a woman also, especially his gf/wife, its just so wrong. That's when I would bring in the justifiable homicide card, and beat the shit out of them.

No, I am not a Hokie, my sister and my best friend are though. Actually, my dad is a Wahoo and most of his family is, so I tend to cheer for UVA. It was a sad day for my father when my sister joined the Hokie nation.

But what happened there was disgusting. And then even worse was hearing people like Fred Phelps say he was going to protest their funerals. What a sad human being. The dude is obviously just way overcompensating for the fact that he is a closeted gay; how else can you explain the fact that his entire life revoles around anti-homosexuality. But when the shooting happened, I did freak out and called everyone I knew who was down there. Actually, I had a friend who was suppose to be in one of the rooms where the shooting occured. He didn't go because he had a hangover from the night before. It is kind of freaky andironic that there was an instance where alcohal saved his life.

Yeah, Nico. You were a bit more snarky than usual last night.

Oh god, here I go. I am going to put this on here and I know I am going to get hate posts. I just want you to know that I am not going to respond to the negative posts I am about to recieve, I am just going to put this down and leave it, and that I am putting this up here with an attempt for compassion where most people think there shouldn't be.

[sigh]

Alright. Geez, remember to step out of your own shoes. Often when a child is molested when he is young, there is a much higher chance that he might molest a child or rape someone when he is an adult. Someone who lives in a home where his father beats his mother has a good probablity of thinking that is okay and beat his own wife when he gets married. I am not condoning rape, molestation, or domestic violence. God no. It is a terrible thing. But just remember that the perpetrator of these crimes probably grew up in a violent household or was molested him/herself when they were a child. I just want you to maybe consider that when you talk about pulling out the "justifiable homicide card". I am terribly sorry what happened to your friend and I hope the person who did that to her gets punished for it. But try to remeber your own statement:

geezer9687 wrote:
...I am not letting myself believe that human beings are fundamentaly evil.

These people have probably had terrible things happen in their lives. Again no excuse, and there should be justice for the victim. I firmly believe there should be a just punishment, not only because they did something bad, but to give the victim some closure on the who terrible incident. Has your friend talked to the police about what happened? She should or, if he is a friend and she doesn't want to go to the police (but she should!), she should at least, when the time is right, talk to her attacker, because it is really important for the process to get some sort of closure, or at least a feeling of closure, so she can get it behind her and move on with her life. And even though what they did is inexcusable and there should be punishment, people should, and I know it is really hard, try to have a tiny bit of empathy, for the entire sad situation. Don't forgive them, just have some empathy for where they come from. They should get just punishment, but if you know what has happened to them, you may reconsider vigilante murder. It took me a long time to get this empathy, so I know that it is hard attain. The main thing that we humans need to do is stop the cycle of violence and abuse. Make sure that kid who witnesses it growing up gets help and learns what a healthy relationship is.

Wow, that was really hard to write. Sorry if I kind of poored myself out here. If you are offended by this, I am truly sorry, but that is the way I feel, and it has taken me a long time to reach this point of view. I don't mean to take anything away from what happened to your friend, geez. I am truly sorry that she has to go through what she is going through, and I understand her pain, I really do. I just wanted to throw my thoughts out there, take it or leave it. I believe human beings are essentially good, and if we can look at everyone and anyone with perspective, we can become more enlightened and understanding race.

Okay, let the hate posts come. I have considered deleting this post so many times as I write it, and just letting it be. But I feel I need to put this down. But I just hear this "cut their balls off" quite a bunch and I think that people need to step back and think about the situation and what they are saying. I am finished on this topic. I am not going to defend my point any more because I have worked very hard and for a very long time to get out of the "cut off their balls" point of view to this one, and I am sticking with it. If I can be more open minded about the subject, hopfully anyone can. If this is wildly unappropriate, I am truly, truly sorry. I just needed to put it down.

PS. I just reread this and can see that it is pretty obvious that I wrote this from personal expirience. And yes, I did. So hopefully, with that knowledge, you all can see that I am coming from a place where I should think the most violent thoughts towards the people who do these disgusting acts. And so maybe the fact that I don't might make you all consider looking at it from a different angle. If you don't, that is fine too. I just really needed to write this.

Wow, that is probably one of the most intense things I have every written. Sorry to toss my troubles onto you nice people. I am being such a debbie downer. This is suppose to be an enjoyable activity. Ummmm.....

Two muffins are in an oven. First muffin says to the second muffin, "Hey, it's pretty hot in here huh, baby." The second muffin responds, "Ahhhhhh, a talking muffin!!!"

I love that joke. It is so stupid.
