well, i don't know what all the fuss is about TGC....either everyone i know/talk to/hear from is completely nuts or the critics are trying to take down a really cool movie for no reason!!!! hmmmm....i wonder which is more likely....bloody critics!!!! you'd think they were paid by the movies they destroy!!!!

Critics are critics.

If they are bored or the film doesn't do anything for them who can blame them for thrashing the film?

300 sucks.

Peer pressure. they don't want their readers to turn on them. If they say too many great things about this film, they could lose a large reading audience (e.g. people opposed to this film). Hence the decent but not great reviews...

From what I recall Harry Potter recieved the same lukewarm-ish reviews but we all know HP Rocks!!!

All the harry Potter film has an 755 or above on rotten tomatoes. the Golden Compass has a very low 425. The Golden Compass just sucks.

I've seen two different sources for Fridays TGC numbers, and neither was as big as the studio would have hoped for.

The more reliable one is putting TGC up with a 10-11 million Friday, which is probably high 20's low 30's for the weekend. The other report is a disaster and is predicting an 8 million Friday, which would mean a low-to-mid 20's OW, that would be downright pathetic. I guess the reviews aren't exactly helping, so much for this out-grossing I Am Legend or National Treasure 2.

Here's a possible scenario with Golden Compass--work with me here: Alot of people are undecided with this big furor over the content and, perhaps, some people are boycotting this film--for the opening weekend, to make it seem like it's a loser. As a statement.

I am going out on a limb here, but I think many of those same people are going to sneak in and see it later in it's run. The opening weekend might not be fantastic, but I wouldn't rule out $100+ million domestic...

The user scores aren't very good--but they are so totally stacked against by some trouble makers that it's not funny...

A while back someone posted a link to an internet radio show that had an interview with Mase on it. They were talking about upcoming movies and their fantasy moguls prospects. The one thing that stuck in my mind was that he said do not go near the golden compass, that nicole kidman is box office poison and this movie would not be a huge success. I took this very seriously, even being so early and I steered clear of the Golden compass in every league, opting for I am Legend of NT2. I am not surprised by this at all, and I am very thankful for whoever it was that posted that link.

Looks like the Catholic League got it's way. Great job on your boycott.

I think it was kind of bad timing. People who celebrate Christmas are busy right now, shopping and spending money on gifts and getting stressed out. They are probably not going to spend $50 bucks taking the kids to a scary-looking movie that's controversial too.

Thanks Geezer. That was my first post. I'm hoping to work my way up to "Cockroach Wrangler". Check out my Uwe Boll film.

Well my prediction was spot on . . . .for the UK Box Office . . .

“At this early stage, all looks good for ‘The Golden Compass’ -- the big December release,” said a London-based booker. “While it is too early to jump for joy, the opening-day figure puts it on course for an opening five-day take of between £6 million ($12.3 million) and £7 million ($14.3 million) and a final gross of £30 million ($61.4 million).”
