And on top of that, Atonement is expanding to 100 theatres next week . . . .

If that were the case, it would be a top 20 all time PTA movie. I don't see it going that high, but it should fall somewhere between Into the Wild and Darjeerling Limited numbers. It is winning the weekend, hands down. Can't believe it is actually going to beat No Country for Old Men. Still don't think its all that great a pick for the price unless it rakes in 35-40 million.

Actually, No Country's PTA and to an extent Atonement's PTA is dampened by the fact they're getting released in 20+ theaters. The more theaters, the harder PTA is to come by. Just look at I'm Not There.

Considering I don't have Atonement at all in Ultimate, and that I have Juno in many of my slates, I really do believe it is capable of $35mil+. I'm looking at it this way: No Country is on target for $35mil+, Juno's PTA is far stronger atm, plus Juno does seem like a more mainstream accessible film that will bode well with the mainstream public... I believe $50mil+ is possible...

well if it does get to 50 mil, and pulls in 10+ PTA (which now looks like a sure thing) then it is not a bad pick at all. Atonement now looks to be a stinker, considering it cost the same as American Gangster.

Everyone should get this movie. I just came back from a free screening of Juno, and I can honestly say that this is probably in my top 3 favorite movies I have seen this year. It is so quirky indie and qenuinely funny. Ellen Page is such a cool endearing person. I wanna know that character in real life. There are gonna be quotes from that movie that people are going to repeat quite a bit a la Napolean Dynomite. "THUNDERCATS ARE GO!" Hilarious. And Fox Searchlight are hitting up hard for awareness and publicity on this movie. Just count the fact that they are having quite a few free screenings of this movie to create buzz, and they even gave out free Juno t-shirts to the people entering. I know that I thought this movie was awesome, so I and many others who went are probably going to be wearing there t-shirt in the upcoming weeks, which is some bitchin' advertisement for a small indie movie. They even handed out promotional cards which gave their website and details on how to enter to win a free screening of Juno in your town and have the entire cast attend. And their efforts are going to pay off. I don;t see why anyone would own Atonement at this point, because Juno is going to beat it out for PTA, especially if it opens slowly as planned. Then when it expands, sure, I totally see it racking up 35-40 million from it's great reviews and word of mouth. Juno is going to be a big indie hit, in the same mold of Little Miss Sunshine.

wow, Fox Searchlight's really pulled out all stops on this one eh?? Those are some creative ad steps they've come up with!!!! not to mention hella expensive....so either someone in Fox has a bankrupts wish or they really really REALLY believe in this flick....and from the looks of the trailer and the word of mouth, i'll believe the latter....

by the way, i forget who it was, but can a movie honestly make 75000 PT in a weekend?? that's like 7500 people in every theater over the weekend!!!!

PS>> i take back every word i said about atonement!!!! apart from Fox Searchlight's obviously superior marketing strategy, there's also the fact that Juno is FAR more likely to catch on with the U-25 crowd if given the chance....and like i've mentioned (and several others), Fox Searchlight really look to have pulled out all stops on this one!!!!

I don't know if Juno can realistically grab $75,000 PTA, BUT the way its gone on its opening day suggests it can. Its number suggests double of what The Savages did per theater. The Savages got $35,000 PTA last week, so logically on Wednesday's numbers, Juno should and could do twice that...

$70,000/75,000 does sound ridiculously huge, but based on Wednesday, it's possible...

Oh, btw let me say, GO JUNO!!!

Oh, it's definitely possible to break $75,000 PTA in a weekend. All time figures:

1. The Lion King, $793,376 PTA, 2 theaters
2. Pocahontas, $448,285 PTA, 6 theaters
3. Toy Story 2, $300,163 PTA, 1 theater
4. A Bug's Life, $291,121 PTA, 1 theater
5. Hercules, $249,567 PTA, 1 theater

If Juno breaks $75,000 PTA that's a really good performance, but it would just barely crack the top 20 PTA weekends of all time. 20th currently is 'Melinda and Melinda,' with $74,238.

whoa dranscht!!!! how do 70,000 people fit in a theater in one weekend?? consider they have maybe 25 shows of the movie, and can fit maybe 250 people in a theater at one show....that's about 6,250 people for the weekend!!!!

unless....wait, by theater, you mean the whole megaplex?? i was always under the impression that per theater meant per screen!!!!

I think Atonement will do better in PTA than Juno

Per theatre doesn't mean per screen. So for example The golden Compass is opening in 3500 theatres, but it will be on aout 5000 screens. Hence it is possible for Juno to have a 75,000 PTA. But in reality it will not. I'd say 40,000 MAX, and I still think Atonement will beat that.

Atonement is opening in 32 theaters, not 27.

I don't think there's any chance of Atonement beating Juno...$7000 PTA on one weekday? That's rare, and it has a huge advantage of being in 1/4 of the theaters. It really looks like we have an indie hit on our hands.
