Transformers will get noms for best sound editing and best sfx. It should win sound editing no prob, not sure about SFX as I haven't seen it or its blockbusting competition

Has anybody heard anything about "Persepolis"? I am a HUGE "Ratatouille" fan, and was certain it was an absolute lock to win Best Animated, but I heard this movie is based on an award-winning graphic novel about a young Iranian girl escaping the Islamic Revolution in the 1970s. Part of me is rooting for its success since not too many films about the subject matter have been made (much less animated), but I'm also too much of a Rat fan to cede the award to another film...

Transformers should also be nominated for Best Sound Mixing along with Best Sound FX and Visual FX.
The only film I can think of that would give Transformers a run for it's money in those 3 categories is At World's End.
Another film that might surprise for Best Visual FX is that His Dark Materials film.

The point has been missed about Transformers as best Picture. I am not saying that it should win- in fact, Transformers, among many of the summer films this year, I haven't even seen yet. My budget got tight so my watching patterns were reduced to rare cheap seat viewings and library rentals. But even if i had the the money my interest level for it wasn't very high. It looked visually stunning and story vacant to me, so very little interest.
The point simply was this- Transformer, along with most of the other big budget summer movies were never even in the conversation for Best Picture. They weren't even given the courtesy of a fair viewing of their quality.
In my opinion, Casino Royale was one of the better movies of the year and worthy to be considered for Best Picture. Not a whiff from the voting block. Two years ago, Batman Begins was one of the best movies of the year. Major awards- none.
I am a poor judge of comedy, but I am sure you could find a couple of great comedies every year that deserve note that go completely under the radar because- well, average people got them and laughed.
And as for Horror, don't even think you will see the light of day on a major awards list.
These films are screwed from the start in the 'important awards' and relagated to special effects, sound, and editing.
The voters need to buy an clue. A major clue.

Jamey, these films are ignored in awards because they focus purely on spectacle and they neglect issues such as plot and character. I haven't seen Transformers but I didn't think Casino Royal was that good. Same goes for Batman Begins, sure it was enjoyable in places, but its plot wasn't great, and it didn't really get into anyone's character that much.
I see your point in that such films seem disregarded instantly, but I've yet to see one in the last few years that truly deserves such accolade.

i see your point jameydunne....they DO get neglected....but like numbersix points out, that's usually because their thematic, plot and characteristic content ranges from slim to none....though casino royale was a great movie, in fact i came out of that movie thinking wow, that was a little closer to arthouse than any bond movie has ever ventured....yet, the lack of thematic threads in the fabric of casino royale was probably what relegated it to a movie of, to quote numbersix.... "spectacle"....
though eva green was great in that movie....so was craig....

A few films that may look like dark horses but I think should be considered contenders :
Zodiac of course. It's the best american film of the year, so far, and although BO's response was cold and it opened way too soon to be a real contender, it got terrific reviews and word of mouth.
Youth without Youth, the comeback of Coppola, after 10 years of retirement. Everyone will be watching this film, who's got a terrific WWII plot.
There will be blood, another comeback, PT Anderson's, 5 years after the wonderful Punch Drunk Love. A period movie that reminds me of the movies from Hollywood's Golden Age in its theme. Plus, Daniel Day-lewis is the lead.

coppola senior i assume....i'm all in for this....though i'm sure the godfather was coppola's peak, if this is anywhere near the masterpiece that was, the academy will trip themselves up throwing oscars at it....
how come there hasn't been much buzz surrounding this movie though??

Well, there's been buzz around the Francis Coppola film in the sense that people wait for it and the movie's been announced for every big festival this year but each time it wasn't ready.
But the main reason it's been quite low key for the moment is that it's an independent movie, shot secretly in Europe last year, with a European subject, european actors.

You misunderstood me
By "shot secretly", I don't mean he didn't tell anyone he shot his film, but that very few filtered from the filming.

If The Godfather had spaceships and alien ray guns then it should win every award out there.
