If I had to make a quick list, it would contain Hitchcock, Frank Capra, John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, Del Toro, David Finchner, Ridley Scott, Brian De Palma and Oliver Stone.

Some are universals on most lists, (Capra, Hitchcock). Many of my choices more cult (Carpenter, Cronenberg, Del Toro). A lot of the others are erratic but potentially brilliant (Finchner, De Palma, R Scott, Stone).

I have other directors that I like alot (Burton, Gilliam, Shyamalan) but their last few features pale in comparison to their earlier stuff.

Some that get mentioned that I have never entirely understood the hype around are Woody Allen, Steven Speilberg, Robert Altman, and Martin Scorsese(spelling?).

Yes number six, i know Lucas didn't technically direct empire, but it would be hard to suggest that it was anything but a Lucas film. And btw, the rest of the films listed bar the first 2 prequels could also have been used as a testiment to his ability as a director which would place him in my top 10.

I don't know, Silversurfer, when half of a director's movies are awful, I doubt I can rate him. And to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of FHX.

That's not to say that directors-only are bad. Spielberg is a living legend, same with Scorsese.

I agree with tuan69. I like these directors too. And i would add Tim Burton and mention Zach Braff, because i liked "Garden State".

Yet you have named Aronofsky, who has made a movie which in my opinion is one of the worst films of the year, alongside the Coen's who haven't made a decent film since the man who wasn't there in 2001 and have had their own fair share of awful movies as 2 of your top 10???

i do love a lot of their work, and i would not call them bad directors because of a couple of films that i do not like.

Touché, Silver.

Personally, I liked The Fountain, but that's just me. Sure, it bit off more than it could chew, but I respect Aronofsky's ambition.

But yeah, you're right about the Coens... their last two movies sucked so much it hurt. But their short in Paris Je Taime was great, and the trailer for No Country for Old Men has given me high hopes. Still, their two bad movies are swamped by their 8 great films.

So I still stand by my 50% rule! Plus the fact that when I look hard at it, I don't like any of Lucas's directed movies THAT much.

Each to their own then, i guess. Lucas will always remain a genius in my eyes for making my childhood so full of awe and wonder. Not many directors have been able to have that kind of influence upon me as him.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about their short, and their trailer does look good so maybe not all hope is lost regarding the coens!!

Yup.

I should commend you for having Rope as your favourite Hitch film, it's definitely one of his most under-rated.

Yeah, I love the way it is played out all in one room, much like Rear Window, the way the camera spans from conversation to conversation, and how gripping the finale is. Not enough is said of this film in comparison to Hitch's more commercial films.

Tuan M.Night Shaymlan are you serious. You list all these great directors [Del Toro,Nolan Brothers,Kubrick] and then you say M.Night he had one good film with The Sixth Sense the rest of his films pure crap.

Im gonna have to go with the wachowski brothers. I know they don't have much and everyone pretty much hates the matrix sequels. But in my book they are pretty bad ace. I wanna see more.
Other than that. James cameron. Wes Craven. Ronny Yu is a character but i like his work too.
