When NSpan suggested Gary Farmer, he reminded me of Dead Man. You know where Johnny Depp was the cowboy and Gary Farmer was the Native American. I'm already getting the idea that The Lone Ranger will be a sanitized version of Dead Man.
That also reminds me of how good Farmer was on Forever Knight. Probably one of the few times in which a Native American (or Canadian) didn't play such a character.

I also think The Lone Ranger is a bad idea. They already fucked up once so why fuck up again?
Meanwhile, I agree that Adam Beach (who should have been nominated for an Academy Award for Flags Of Our Fathers two years ago) should play Tonto and Depp should play the title character. In fact, that's probably the main reason why the last version sucked so badly because of the decision to cast the title character last and with a talentless unknown. Well that, the lack of a good story and replacing the William Tell Overture with a bad narration by Merle Haggard.
Adam Beach and Christopher Walken should have had a tag team nomination for best supporting actor(s) for their parts in Joe Dirt! But seriously, Ken Watanabe was/would have been a better choice. I wasn't let down by Flags until after I saw how good Letters was. I even had the nostalgia of Johnny Cash's "The Ballad of Ira Hayes."

How are they going to do Cars 2 without Paul Newman? Or did they already record Paul Newman's dialogue before he died?
And Ken Watanabe was more deserving of a Best Actor nomination. That was clearly a lead role (unless you really want to give someone an Oscar like with George Clooney's role in Syriana, in which he was the lead but was nominated for Best Supporting Actor).

To be fair, Michael Madsen just kind of shows up, films a few lines of dialogue as himself and cashes the check. He has never and probably will never sell a movie on his name alone.
For a great Tonto who is an actor but not well known yet I would suggest Moses Brings Plenty. He is an actor and musician who has had small roles in Hidalgo, Pirates of the Caribbean and he was Crazy Horse in the BBC movie.
I met him at a concert (he is in a band called AIRO) and he is a scary ass looking guy but he was cool as hell.
I would be kind of pissed if they had Depp playing Tonto. Shit we already killed most of them and stole their nation and we are still not allowing the few left to play their own race in movies. Sad.

Apparently, Clooney is supposed to play the Lone Ranger.

Thank goodness they passed over Nicholas Cage (no offense.)

I'm glad it wasn't Nic Cage, but Clooney is no better IMO.
