You're expecting way too much from the Academy. Yes, I think it's a general consensus that the Academy usually gets it wrong. Rarely do they get it right. I mean, "Crash" winning?! "Saving Private Ryan" losing to "Shakespeare in Love"?! "A Beautiful Mind"?! "Ordinary People" beating out "Raging Bull"?
"Gandhi" beating out "E.T."? (Finally something about older movies I can comment on!!!)

Yes, I agree that that is a tragedy. If being fair, give Kingsley the Best Actor and "E.T." Best Picture. But, this is evidence of the age factor that has been mentioned in reference to "Dark Knight". When both "E.T." and "Gandhi" came out, "E.T." was a great children's movie that took the b.o. by storm and "Gandhi" was an epic ode to the great healer beautifully portrayed by Sir Kingsley. No, it wasn't the righteous thing to do, as you're saying, but I can see why that happened. As for "A Beautiful Mind" and "Crash", I don't know what they were thinking. No, I don't think that "Brokeback Mountain" should have Best Picture, but it was more deserving than "Crash".
